We can't see her if they're going to give her the unseen Wolowitz treatment.

Where they really missed the boat was in not getting a Michael Dorn guest appearance to deliver the baby.

Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous & Why
Maybe they could have combined peoples ideas and have Raj dressed as Worf for a convention when he gets trapped with Howard & Bernadette and has to deliver the baby.

Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous & Why
I can see why they thought the idea was cute - it is. Problem is that it'll become as much of a pain as Raj's mutism the longer the show stays on the air. At some point it will be patently ridiculous that we never see her.
Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous & Why
If they went 8 years without Howard's mother not being seen not annoying, the baby should be easier because they won't have her in any episode where she isn't a convenient plot device.

I don't want to see her. I didn't want her to exist. But they can certainly show someone carrying a swaddled bundle, pushing a baby carriage, or something in a crib occasionally without actually having a real baby around.
At least I hope they can.
Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous & Why
Women can be in labor for a full day. There's no way a hospital says come again when you're closer.
Actually, they do. Many hospitals won't admit prior to 4-5 cm dilation due to space constraints. When I was in labor with my daughter, we went back three times before they finally admitted me, and by then I was 6 cm along. Before then, they just told me to walk around and relax at home. I labored at home for a good 8 hours. Unless the baby/mother is in distress or the labor is progressing at a really fast rate, they usually wait until the mother is around halfway along. Many first time moms labor for a really long time. My entire experience took around 24 hours from beginning to delivery. Many hospitals don't have the space to accommodate everyone if they are all laboring for that long.
I agree that the actual birth was a little lackluster as far as television goes. I thought Friends did a really good job with Rachel's labor and delivery. I guess they didn't have enough in the budget to show a real (or even a fake) baby. I hated the "crying like Howard's mom" thing, too. Are they going to keep rolling with that cry? lol
Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous & Why

This happens all the time. False labor is a very real thing. Braxton Hicks can happen anytime in the last few weeks and sometimes even earlier. Had her water broke however she would have been admitted regardless how far along she is.

Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous & Why
Sorry for the delay. I mentioned earlier in the season that the show has slipped through my radar after a lackluster start of the season. No one I know is watching it live anymore, and I typically forget when it's on. Killing some time, I watched the latest episode On Demand.
There have been many a sitcom to introduce a baby. Such an episode has a template. The woman goes into labor, needs to be rushed to the hospital, some degree of comedy ensues, baby is delivered. However the very last step is the most vital. After the baby is said to be a healthy boy/girl, the mom and newborn embrace and the audience loses their minds with chants of awwww. Female viewers go absolutely nuts over a baby being brought into their show.
Now The Birthday Synchronicity had some of those elements, but they were all played in the least entertaining way possible. You have friends and family rushing to the hospital only to be told false alarm. Are you kidding me? What planet does this show take place on again? Women can be in labor for a full day. There's no way a hospital says come again when you're closer. Then we have everything played out in the waiting room. Ok, I can go with that. Sure it's not as exciting as seeing some of the action, but if you want to be different, ok. But at least show us something worthwhile. Nope, sitting around reflecting on how whipped every male on the show has become. Oh but here comes Howard with the good news, the baby is here both her and Bernie are fine. Do we get to see the baby? NO. In other words we have 30 minutes of building to something, be it suspense or comedy, and we get nothing. This is one of the easiest audience heartstring pulls in the playbook and somehow TBBT drops the ball.
It's really starting to feel like a long time has passed since this show was good. The audience that grew with the geeksploitation of pop culture is now treated to perhaps a quota controlled Star Trek joke a week submerged under a layer of generic sitcom relationship melodrama.

Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous + Why
The comedy came from Amy's frustration at her birthday "present" being constantly interrupted by the arrival of the baby. And the baby's raucous crying is the signal that she will be the true legacy of Mrs. Wolowitzoffscreen, never seen and annoyingly loud. It's brilliant, really. They've introduced a baby without really introducing a baby.

Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous + Why
You've got basic flaws in your assessment.
1) hospitals will and have sent people home just like the show did.
2) why should they follow the standard steps to a baby being born in a tv show?
3) and most important, you need to get a life if all you have to do is go on this site and write basically a novel about a show that has lasted ten years. Ten years, they've done well.
It's a sitcom, not actually a life documentary.
Know the difference?

Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous + Why
Well, who's bitching about the show then getting upset for people disagreeing with him? Especially when your first assertion was flat-out wrong.
Actually, they avoided many of the sitcom clichs regarding a childbirth. And had that not happened, you'd be in here bitching they copied off of Friends or All in the Family or any one of a hundred sitcoms that have had a birth in it.

Happened to us twice with our first child. So stop spewing stuff that you know nothing about.
Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous & Why
With my first kid the doctor told me I had already begun to dilate at my last appointment with him but told me not to go in because they would just send me home. He said they send people home a lot. Granted that was a long time ago, but yeah, it happens.
I am so glad we didn't see a mushy baby scene with Howard and Bernadette. It makes it easier for them to not focus on the baby too much heading out. It was a set up, I think.

Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous & Why
Agreed. I can't say with all honesty it worked perfectly, but it seemed like the writers were trying to avoid any sort of birth clichs we've seen before.
Sorry, those who don't want the characters to ever change, go watch The Simpsons. There's a certain advantage to characters that can't age or have actual life experiences.
And those who point to Seinfeld, the point of that show was the four main characters reacted with the crazies that surrounded them. It was basically a reversed sitcom. And even that wasn't its original premise. Hell, BBT kept the majority of its original conflict between the nerdy guys and the reality-based hot neighbor for three seasons until it was run into the ground. Then it adapted itself and continued for seven more (at least).

No surprise on that. I'm a bit surprised we didn't see Bernadette in labor grab Howard and lift him off the ground with one hand while yelling at him for causing it.

Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous & Why
That would have been FUNNY!
I'm a bit surprised we didn't see Bernadette in labor grab Howard and lift him off the ground with one hand while yelling at him for causing it.
My older brothers attended the births of ALL their children, and it seemed to make them closer as couples and good fathers.
But I've heard some real eye-openers about fathers who saw all the pain and agony their poor wives went through, who said they just HATED that baby for doing all that to her. Not to mention the mess it made of her undercarriage.. (Like Joan Rivers said, "Melissa, you ripped me to SHREDS!!")
But I think my brothers were right: If you're going to have children, you shouldn't just chicken out when all the suffering is being done, and go hide in the waiting room.
I just remembered what happened when the daughter-in-law of one of my mother's friends gave birth. Her husband was there, but he had missed the "movie night" in their birthing class because of his work obligations. Well, when things got gory, the poor shmuck just fainted dead away. The staff were too busy to deal with him, so they just left him there in a rumpled heap on the floor! His wife was an OPERATING ROOM NURSE, and had seen it all and she was SO disgusted with her husband, lying there, out cold on the floor, while SHE was doing all that work.
Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous + Why
Why do you think only females go aww and nuts whenever a baby is on screen or in real life?
Isn't that sexist?

Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous & Why
the worst part of the Birthday synchronicity was when Amy used Harry potter for sex
Exploiting something the person likes for sex is a recurring joke that has been used several times by several characters.
Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous & Why
And on plenty of other sitcoms to boot.

Can't disagree with you for this episode in particular, it feels like the writer's are losing any semblance of direction for the show.

Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous & Why
I was kinda glad we didn't see the actual birth. I didn't really feel like watching yet ANOTHER picture perfect sitcom birth lol! Maybe it's just me, but it seems like on most shows I've seen that depict a childbirth, it's almost always the same scenario: water breaks, they go to the hospital, there's some dramatic laboring for a while and then mom delivers all natural with NO medication or complications! EVER! Does this happen in real life? Yes, of course! But not to everyone! Just once, I'd like to see a tv birth where the mom gets an epidural. Or even(GASP!)a c-section!!! Not only would it be more realistic, but it would add a bit of excitement in my opinion lol. But apparently, in the television world, everyone gives birth exactly the same

I like the episode, but do not understand why Sheldon and Amy are still in Penny's apt. That bed is tiny, there is no desk for either of them, etc.
Re: The Birthday Synchronicity - Horrendous & Why
Please tell that to my nephew's wife.
Women can be in labor for a full day. There's no way a hospital says come again when you're closer.
They got sent along home twice.
The 2nd time they did not even make it home, when they turned around and returned, just in the nick of time. Had they finished the journey home, she would have been one f those baby on the side of the highway stories.
