Trainspotting : Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Just wondering - what film would you show someone to put them off drugs for life?

For me I'd have to say Requiem. While I love Trainspotting and don't think it glamorises drug use in any way I think it shows a bit more of the 'fun' elements of drug culture.

I seriously think an edited Requiem should be played to older school kids - would have more impact than all the 'drugs are bad' videos I sat through for sure.

Any other suggestions . . . ?

Worst case scenario, not exaggeration. Arm amputation? Plausible. Mental institution? Plausible. Prison? Plausible. Prostitution? Plausible.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

None of them are plausible. They're possible, just like it is for anyone else.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Aren't "plausible" & "possible" synonyms?

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

I don't think I'll ever watch Requiem for a Dream again which means it gets the job done.

I wouldn't call Trainspotting "fun", but it does have some humor parallel to the striking drug addiction displayal. Requiem was just too blunt.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

I wouldn't watch Requiem again because it's *beep* - not because it's a profound critical look at drug addiction.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Requiem 4 a dream has been done a million times before Nothing special.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

They both make me want to "party"!

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Candy is really good example when two people's relationship on drugs
Its more realistic than Requiem for a Dream. Also the relationship aspect makes people be able to relate to it more, so to watch to it go through phases with heroin makes it an even stronger impact.

Plus it stars Heath Ledger and we all know what happen with him and drugs

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Basketball Diaries +1 also what will you do about drugs that aren't heroin? :P

If you don't believe in Jesus Christ and are 100% proud of it, put this in your sig.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

If you considered pot a drug there whole library right there but I wouldn't exactly call those movies deterents

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

I'd definitely say this over Requiem. Requiem was a mashup of every worst case scenario. By the end it was certainly disturbing, but absolutely ridiculous. A Health teacher would scoff at it.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Trainspotting. The scene with the dead baby trumps all.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

People with human compassion finds the dead baby scene a deterrent. People on heroin are not going to view a dead baby as a deterrent to their lifestyle. Requiem is more of a deterrent, but only to kids who have something to lose.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Not everyone in agreement but some interesting debate!

Candy came to my mind when writing originally and I can see why Basketball Diaries, while not one of my favourites, would be suggested for a younger audience.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

I'd say Requiem much more over Trainspotting, only because no one really gets away in Requiem. Atleast in Trainspotting, Renton walks away without AIDS, and with a lot of money in hand.

I haven't seen Basketball Diaries so I can't comment on that.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

trainspotting made me want to try heroin, not avoid it. requiem made it look miserable, but hbo did a documentary on a group of heroin addicts that was more of a deterrent than any movie could be. using toilet water to mix your skag, resorting to homosexual prostitution and the overall physical degradation of the addicts was enough to put me off to it.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

That just goes to show that reality is often worse than anything a screenwriter can dream up.

I know who I am! I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude!

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

I guess Reqiuem was the better deterant because it probably showed the worst case scenariobut I still prefer Trainspotting

You think you're hot *beep* but you're really just cold diarrhea.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Basketball Diaries

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

I was already turned off Heroin when I was crazy young on account of the play "Rent"sure, it didn't show anything or go into detail but just the thought of getting Aids from sharing needles and recieving a death sentence is terrifying when you're 10.

Trainspotting gauranteed that there is NO way in hell I'd ever even go near someone who came in even the slightest contact with Heroin.

Requiem just made me want to kill myself. Great deterrantbut a bit overkill.

Oh, heyyou gave into the madness? That's awesome

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Not a movie (unless you count the film adaptation of Hannibal), but type "facepeel" into Google Image Search and read the related story. That ought to put kids off hard drugs forever.

"I've been living on toxic waste for years, and I'm fine. Just ask my other heads!"

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Why's no-one mentioned Christiane F?

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Christiane F. 'Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo' is a great movie and a great deterrent to drugs. I actually saw that movie at school and it impressed me a lot. First movie I thought about when seeing this thread title :)

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

definitely trainspotting because it sends a message to those oversmart types who'll say things like "Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a starter home. Choose dental insurance, leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose your future. But why would anyone want to do a thing like that?" when discussin life

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

What message is that? That heroin is a reasonable alternative to being a struggling, vapid zero for the rest of your life?

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

I'd also say Basketball diaries, I saw it for the first time a month ago and was blown away.

Can't keep me off this escalator!

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

it has to be Requiem.I don't think any movie can show the hell that drugs are as great as this one.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Spun if you're doing meth.

It's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

I agree that Requiem is a much better deterrent against drugs. It's more realistic.

Old lady wheelchair chicken challenge!

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

I liked also less than zero! For me is a classic masterpiece!

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

a panic in needle park. and candy.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Candy (2006) with the late Heath Ledger

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Ummmm Ok, so I just skimmed the replies. But I couldnt see anyone mentioning

Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas.

I know it's a helluva entertaining film, much in the same way as Trainspotting is But you cant say they have a very good time. Benicio del Toro's character waving a big nasty knife around, determined to kill himself in the tub for instance. I mean, it's not a pretty life it's depicting. I love the movie to death- but I sure as hell would call it deterrant.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Hated Requiem as a movie, so can't comment objectively on that as deterrent. But in middle school (in Israel) I was at a program that trained kids to teach their peers about drugs and we were shown the Basketball Diaries.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Teens should watch The Basketball Diaries and adults should watch either Requiem For a Dream or Candy.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

I agree with you 100% on all terms. I think Requiem would definitely have a bigger impact over TrainspottingI'm not sure if Transpotting would work all that well.

And I've also thought, in the past, that perhaps Requiem should be shown in schools or something. To this day the most emotionally draining and depressing movie I've seen.

I am Jack's smirking revenge.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Trainspotting actually made Heroin "cool" again for a while in certain scenes..as for Requiem..that *beep* was just too pretentious..

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

For me it's Requiem That movie freaked me out but not enough to quit drugs.

Some people can do drugs in moderation .. It's the addicted jerks who screw up recreation for everyone else.

Trainspotting is a great movie but not a "Deterrent"

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

LaunLori, may I ask what drugs you are referring to? Because if you think people can do heroine moderately, you a pretty ignorant.

Also, people don't choose to be addicted to drugs. Well, they obviously choose to do drugs but not become addicted. With hard drugs like heroine, you can become addicted after one fix. It isn't a matter of some people just 'over doing it.' It has everything to do with an individual's mental and physical state.

I'm not against all drugs, but statements like that make me cringe.

And mind saying what is so terrible about Requiem? Disagreeing with its over-the-top statement, finehowever, it had beautiful cinematography, regardless.

As for which would be better as a deterrent, well, I would definitely say Requiem. I don't think Trainspotters was as in-your-face as Requiem was.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

You're a moron. Thanks. Of course they can do it moderately, just like people are able to use alcohol moderately. You're just someone who's fallen prey to the propaganda of the government and teachers.

Anyone can easily become addicted to something, but most people don't have minds that are so weak.

If it was so much more addicting than other drugs, we wouldn't be using it in medicine.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

I really liked Trainspotting but I loved Requiem For A Dream. You don't even have to show them all of it. Just the part where Marlon Wayans is screaming for help from the jail cell.

The knack to flying lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

spun and fear and loathing come to mind. altho there about diff drugs those actually gloreified drugs. heroin is just so unapealling

Re: Best deterrant? Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream or others?

Trainspotting shouldn't be viewed as a deterrent. It is not a film made to glorify or attack drugs. It is quite simply just a film about them, made from a neutral view point.
