Gia : How Exactly Did Gia Get HIV/AIDS?
Re: How Exactly Did Gia Get HIV/AIDS?
She got AIDS from the HIV. She got HIV from a dirty needle.
Re: How Exactly Did Gia Get HIV/AIDS?
Ewwww thanks = /
Re: How Exactly Did Gia Get HIV/AIDS?
In the movie it was suggested that she got it through sharing needles, but honestly there was a point where she was prostituting herself to dealers for drugs, so she could have gotten it that way.

It would be difficult to know exactly who infected another person, if there were multiple risk factors over a period of years.
Though perhaps you could analyze the particular strain of a virus someone was carrying, and try to match that to other infected people in their circle. But also, people can be infected with HIV for a decade before they present with outward symptoms, so for all we know (although the chances would have been slimmer) Carangi was infected before she even arrived in NYC.
Since her most constant contact with blood was through sharing unclean needles with other intravenous drug users, it's would seem that was the most likely route of infection. But there's no way to know at this point.

Re: How Exactly Did Gia Get HIV/AIDS?
Considering how rapidly she went down, based on what we now know, I'd wager that she had repeated exposure to multiple strains of HIV. So it's not such a wild leap to consider that while the original exposure happened god knows how or when, she had a somewhat lengthy period of some heavy exposure via both needles and sex. I'm aware her primary orientation was homosexual, but evidence seems to point towards some pretty heavy and repeated contact with strains of HIV.

Capo - May I suggest you get yourself an education?
A person can get infected with HIV - the Human Immunodeficiency Virus - any number of ways. Based on what is known about Gia's past, it is LIKELY she was INFECTED via shared needles or a sexual partner. But no one knows for certain.
The latency period for HIV, meaning how long the virus lives in humans for a period of time without causing any problems, is 3 to 20+ years. On average it is 8 years.
AIDS is defined as when the T-cell count falls below 200, or when other diseases associated with AIDS present themselves.
So, she did NOT "get AIDS." She was a young woman infected with HIV early in the crisis. Probably because she was a woman & it was only the mid-1980s, there were few treatments when it developed into full-blown AIDS.
Medicine has come a LONG way in 30 years. Perhaps you could grow up too, & stir up a bit of compassion.
