Winnie the Pooh : Someone needs to get fired…
Re: Someone needs to get fired…
I wish everyone would stop complaining about this being released the same time as HP. Winnie the Pooh will hold its own. No one expects it to top HP, not even Disney. Just chill.

Re: Someone needs to get fired…
the problem isn't topping HPof course Winnie the Pooh won't be able to top the finale of such a modern day successful seriesbut Winnie the Pooh would be more profitable if it was released on a different weekend. The majority of movie goers are distracted on watching Harry Potter and thus Winnie the Pooh gets overshadowedit's plain and simpleDisney needs to be smarter about their marketing if they want to maximize their profit

Re: Someone needs to get fired…
Disney has an annoying habit of scheduling their animated films against the most anticipated movies. I don't get it. (Bolt vs. Twilight, Princess and the Frog vs. Avatar, etc.)
Unfortunately, it's not the people who schedule these films who will be fired. It will probably be the animators who worked on them.

Re: Someone needs to get fired…
I doubt Bolt had any trouble going up against Twilight.
Re: Someone needs to get fired…
There's a flaw in your basic premise regarding the release date of this film, I believe but first things first While I agree with your assessment that Tangled was oddly advertised - it still earned just under $50m its opening weekend with a WW box office gross of around $400m. So ultimately that film wasn't hurt by either its ad campaign or its release date.
As for Pooh's release date, moving away from HP would not necessarily help. Would they do better against Transformers (or Cowboys & Aliens or any of the long string of big budget, high concept blockbuster hopefuls that are churned out one weekend after another throughout the summer)? I think not. So, maybe shifting it to another time of year then, so it could make more money on opening weekend? It could be. But does that mean that it would ultimately gross more domestically? Unlikely. There is a limited pool of people who will see this movie, whether they all come on opening weekend or spread out over the movie's entire run. They CANNOT maximize profits any further by shifting the day, it's just not that kind of move.
Now, Disney might have opened this picture around Thanksgiving, traditionally a time when family movies skew younger. But then they would be competing with the family oriented films of other studios (Puss and Boots, Happy Feet 2, The Muppets, Chipmunks, Tin Tin and more). I'm not sure Pooh could beat any of these either. Especially, while having to share the young-family market. I think Disney was hoping to appeal to families who have kids BELOW Harry Potter age (keeping in mind, this last installment was "darker") or simply to families that enjoy a quieter movie-going experience (between the hearing loss and the induced seizures, Michael Bay and his robots can be a bit much).
Finally, I think, Disney wanted to release it now, so it could push DVD sales (and related merchandise) at Christmas. They wouldn't be able to have the movie on shelves if they released it much later in the year.
Disney seems to have a pretty solid handle on their empire and its many facetsand they have for nearly 75 years. If there's a way to wring an extra nickel out of something, I believe, they'll find it.
Keep in mind that in its day Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was known as "Disney's Folly".

Re: Someone needs to get fired…
Yes, it actually would make a difference if it wasn't released on the same day as the film that earned the highest opening weekend of all time.

Re: Someone needs to get fired…
Unfortunately, Harry Potter isn't the only problem. Here are the weekend estimates.
1. Harry Potter - $180M
2. Transformers 3 - $20M
3. Horrible Bosses - $15M
4. Zookeeper - $11M
5. Winnie The Pooh - $7.8M
Even if Harry Potter wasn't opening this weekend, there are actually 3 other films that people would rather see than Winnie the Pooh.People just don't want to see it.It doesn't matter where it's scheduled.

Re: Someone needs to get fired…
I wanna see it.
Re: Someone needs to get fired…
Well you are only partly right. There are not real good "open" weekends. But people do want to see it. It will do around the same as it would without a major release. Families that want to see it will. My kids were anticipating it, moreso than Cars 2, and unlike Cars 2, they want to know when they can go back. They did not dislike Cars 2, they just enjoyed this more.
Re: Someone needs to get fired…
Give it time, bro. Its not gonna be a box office opening weekend hit, but it'll get up there when the HP hype fades.
Re: Someone needs to get fired…
Don't forget they'll be making a lot more off the merchandise for winnie the pooh as well.

Re: Someone needs to get fired…
I could care less how much money it makes. It's Winnie the Pooh for heaven sakes! Probably the best movie or the year!
Re: Someone needs to get fired…
I realize that I'm late to this discussion, but let me offer a counter-arguement: perhaps Disney releases its animated movies to go against big summer blockbusters on purpose.
(I'll give you a second for that to set in)
Everyone knows that Harry Potter, Twilight, Avatar, and many others, will outperform a Disney animated movie. But maybe that's not the point. The point is (it seems to me) to give families with small children (who lack the interest level and maturity) another option when going to the theater. I have a two year old daughter; I wouldn't take her to see Avatar, but I'd sure as hell take her to see Winnie the Pooh.
Not to mention there is a huge advantage to getting children introduced to and used to your stable of characters at a young age.
Step outside your own little lives every once in a while, and realize that there are other considerations.

Re: Someone needs to get fired…
I'm 28 years old and much rather see winnie the pooh than harry potter
Re: Someone needs to get fired…
I can't believe people are calling it a bomb! Idiots! The word of the mouth for this film is very good, not to mention the fact that Winnie the Pooh films has never truly been profitable.
Re: Someone needs to get fired…
The audience for Pooh is very different from Harry Potter. They aren't even related.
Re: Someone needs to get fired…
I find that to be completely untrue. I'm 21 and know a ton of people that were excited for both. For goodness sakes, my younger brother who's 16 and loves the Harry Potter franchise still wanted to see it because it's nostalgic. That goes the same for most of my friends/coworkers. People's tastes are multifaceted, just because you like or dislike Winnie the Pooh/Harry Potter doesn't mean your tastes are reflected all through one movie.
Re: Someone needs to get fired…
Also, I barely saw anything for it advertised, I didn't even know it was out already.

yeah, well, a good movie shouldnt be bothered being released same day as a crappy movie on a crappy book.

All I know is that my 4-year old loves Tow Mater and everything to do with "Cars". But he didn't ask to see "Cars 2" again. But he DID ask to see Pooh again.
That, my friends, is for the win.

Re: Someone needs to get fired…
What the hell do you care when Disney releases Winnie the Pooh, as long as you get to see it!?
Or how much profit poor Disney is losing, because Winnie is "competing" against Potter in the same month! Maybe someone at Disney - the one you scream bloody murder at - realized people don't get to choose only one movie to see a month, but instead can return and watch something else.
And who knows maybe after seeing the magic and fantasy of the last Potter they might want to come back with their families and enjoy another kids friendly movie Oh, if only there was one showing at the same time!
By your logic every time a blockbuster screens all others should be pulled out of theaters and hidden from the public in fear. Your logic is flawed and rudimentary concerning this so before you start demanding people lose their jobs maybe reason things over a few times.
P.S. nobody cares about your movie ratings, its like listing your favorite dental floss, exactly as pointless but far douchier

Re: Someone needs to get fired…
Here's why I care: I care because this movie, as sad as it is, is essentially the last bit of hope for mainstream 2d animation, and they released it on the same day as the last film in one of the biggest movie franchises ever. You just know the higher ups at disney are going to see the lackluster performance of this film and think "Well both The Princess and the Frog and Winnie the Pooh underperformed, so clearly n one is interested in this traditional animation thing anymore. We better go back to releasing mediocre 3d animated films like Tangled."

Re: Someone needs to get fired…
Don't worry. John Lasseter is in charge of the animation studio, not the Disney "higher-ups." And Lasseter loves 2-D animation. You are 100% correct that this is exactly what the higher-ups would try to do, though. Back when Eisner and the business people were in charge of the studio rather than the artists, they had 3 box-office bombs in a row while Pixar and Dreamworks were scoring massive hits, and so they blamed it on 2-D animation, shut down the 2-D studio entirely, and we got "Chicken Little" as a result. Thank God Disney merged with Pixar and Lasseter is in charge now. Otherwise, the only 2-D animation we'd ever be seeing again from Disney would be imports from Studio Ghibli.

Re: Someone needs to get fired…
Honestly, the only reason I came here is because I had no idea this thing ever came out. I knew I'd heard about itthen it was totally forgotten. Completely overshadowed by HP7. I'm disappointed in the marketing team or whomever was responsible for this because it was a silly, thoughtless decision. It should've come out around now for the winter months anyway.
