Classic Film : CFB Poll: Favorites of 1936 *** POLL IS CLOSED ***

CFB Poll: Favorites of 1936 *** POLL IS CLOSED ***

Welcome to the new series of yearly polls for the Classic Film Board. This poll is for the year 1936.

These polls will be run by a rotating group of board participants, including flaiky, Rufus-T, me, and hopefully others. Depending on who is running the poll each month, there may be some variations in the rules and/or results postings, but we will try to keep things somewhat consistent with each other.

Unfortunately, we have not received specific authorization from OldAle1 to take over the series of polls he had been running, so we are not claiming to be his direct successors. This is a new series of polls, which is why we're starting with 1936 (instead of 1932, the year OldAle had been planning to do next). The poll rules will be similar, though, and I have taken a lot of phrasing from OldAle's rules below.

To help you with your ballot and in finding films, here are some resources:

IMDb's list of most-rated features from 1936:
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?year=1936,1936&title_type=feature&explore=num_votes&sort=num_votes,desc

Wikipedia article for 1936: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1936_in_film

General rules for the polls:

1. You may vote for as few as FIVE and as many as TWENTY films for this poll. If you wish to mention more films as runners-up, that's fine - but please be clear as to what films are in your top 20 ballot.

2. Feature films, documentaries, short films, and TV movies and miniseries are eligible for these polls; individual regular television episodes and continuing TV series are not. We will make exceptions in rare cases for movies which for some reason have been classified by IMDb as television episodes (example: Persuasion (1995)). Obviously, that's unlikely to be relevant for the current 1936 poll, but it's something that might come up in future polls.

3. One list per user, please.

4. You may list choices in order of preference, in which case your top film will receive a number of points equal to the number of films in your list up to 20, with each next-ranked film receiving one fewer point, or in no order, in which case each film will receive the same number of points. So, for example, if you only vote for 5 ranked films, your top film will receive 5 points and your 5th-place film will receive 1 point. If you vote for 20 unranked films, each film will receive 10.5 points; if you vote for 5 unranked films, each film will receive 3 points. I believe that this is a change from how OldAle scored ballots that had less than 20 titles listed, although I'm not certain if it is a change. Please make sure that if your choices are in order, they are numbered. If I can't figure out what you mean, your ballot may be scored differently from what you expected.

5. I prefer original titles and English language titles, as well as the name of the director(s), particularly if necessary to avoid ambiguity. If I can't figure out which title you are referring to, your vote might be credited to the wrong film.

6. We go by IMDb dates for these polls; while there are instances in which IMDb dates are debatable, the IMDb listing is the default. Should you have questions about years for specific titles, please let me know. Since this is a new series of polls, and all years through 2004 were polled in the old series of polls, past rulings on what films are eligible in particular years are no longer applicable. In other words, if a film was listed in 1937 when the poll was conducted for that year back in 2011, but now it's listed in 1936, it's eligible in 1936 now.

7. There will be a questions & answers post immediately following this one for problematic films to be listed and status updates for this poll.

I plan to keep this poll open until approximately November 18; the following poll will be 1979. After that it will be January, and I expect that we will take off while zetes conducts the 2016 poll.

I'm not mentioning any of the Thin Man films. I've tried to give them several chances, and I just can't get through them, much as I love mysteries from that time period.

Tell you what for now - I could theoretically squeeze in a poll if I wanted to do it right away before going on a trip in November - but that trip might be for 3 weeks and I'm not sure when we're leaving. So if you guys want to run the next poll or two before the new year and zetes' 2016 poll, go right ahead, and we'll discuss whether I'll return to it after the new year. I'll try to check in on the forums this weekend but I'm kind of busy for the next day or two I think.

Be true, Unbeliever.

So everyone please keep in mind that this may just be temporary, but I hope you'll go ahead and vote anyway.

I'll be waiting, with a gun and a pack of sandwiches.

Re: CFB Poll: Favorites of 1936

As we are about halfway through the poll period, I just want to thank everyone who has posted their votes so far, and encourage anyone else who is interested to remember to submit their votes before the deadline.

Also, I have a couple of follow-up comments about my original post:

These polls will be run by a rotating group of board participants, including flaiky, Rufus-T, me, and hopefully others.

In addition, farne has also volunteered to work on the polls. http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000010/nest/261495121?d=262479627#262479627

Unfortunately, we have not received specific authorization from OldAle1 to take over the series of polls he had been running, so we are not claiming to be his direct successors.

We did hear from OldAle who said that he was glad that we were interested in continuing this, and I appreciated getting his support to have us run these polls at least for the time being. http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000010/nest/262797143

Re: CFB Poll: Favorites of 1936

Alright Gromit.

I wasn't going to submit a list for this year as my knowledge of this era is ropey at best. But because it is you who is hosting it - one of my most respected users due to your stellar Contributer Board contributions and excellent general disposition - I think I should at the very least make some kind of an effort! So here is the best list I can summon up:

5. The Man Who Changed His Mind
6. Secret Agent
7. The Crimes of Stephen Hawke
8. The House of Secrets
9. The Rogues' Tavern
10. A Face in the Fog

Cheers
