Re: Why do they have to die? (Spoiler for Brokeback)

There is.
"Beautiful Thing"
Crappy movie, but they do stay togather. And don't die.

Re: Why do they have to die? (Spoiler for Brokeback)

You're absolutely right. I can't understand it either. You know, Somerset Maugham once said that death or marriage were the absolute best ways to finish a novel. But this kind of movie has had to many deaths and no marriages! Do you think directors/writers/producers are prejudiced? That this is a way to "punish them"? That would be quite disturbing (to say the least)! Anyway, the film itself is lovely, isn't it? I liked pretty much everything: the story is simple, but moving, as are some of the scenes (the one in the snow, the moment Jagger passes away), and it all works well. 4,9 out of 5 (because of the ending)! lol

No, it's not. It's full of cliches and bad acting.

Here's one with a happy ending

For followers of this thread: late last year I discovered a lovely film with a gay relationship that ends happily. It's called Big Eden. It may not be quite the masterpiece that Brokeback Mountain is, but it's sensitively done and very well-acted as well as having similar Rocky Mountain scenery (in Montana). The two men the story centers on go through a lot of trial and tribulation before getting together, and I came to care for them pretty early on. Seek it outit's a winner!

Re: Here's one with a happy ending

Oh, I adore Big Eden! And I think that since it's a movie that's centered around the idea of how important family and friends as extended family are, the fact that it ends happily even though the main character is gay is quite incredible and beautiful. Also, I think it's sweet, funny and sensitive. So in conclusion: yay Big Eden and the fact that gay movies can end up well too!

I used to have a fight10.gif, but damnit do I want a fight3.gif!

Re: Here's one with a happy ending

Perhaps the best gay film with (for once ) a happy ending is Maurice - based on the book by E.M. Forster.
It is very similar in theme to Brokeback Mountain - but predates it by 20 years. It is also less coy about the two men together - more sensual, sexier - and braver too - with total frontal nudity. Not surprisingly, both the Director and the producer were gay (actually Merchant and Ivory were a couple) - and they suffuse Maurice with a greater feeling of gay sensitivity than Ang Lee has ever been able to do.

Re: Here's one with a happy ending

Now that I think about it..all my favourite gay films always had one of the main character dies

Lilies, Bent, Brokeback Mountain

There are movies that I love that don't include death but not my top gay films

Maurice, Trick, Another gay movie, Boy Culture, etc

I'm a girl. Shh

Re: Why do they have to die? (Spoiler for Brokeback)

mg501, I can understand how you feel. I love a movie with a happy ending. Please do remember however, that this story was based on fact and on people who were real and real events so it's the only way it could end. Eytan Fox who of coarse is gay himself wanted to tell this story and from what I have read had a terrible time finding funding for this movie. One of the reasons it is so short.

You can find some happy ending movies though.

I too recommend Big Eden. Just a sweet movie.

Latter Days.

My Beautiful Laundrette. The happy ending is quick. I would have liked to see more.

Also Walk On Water. Another Eytan Fox movie.

I know there are more out there.

Maurice, a wonderful gay film about being in love and the supression of living in a intolerant society, it has a happy ending! And Rupert Graves is absolutely gorgeous, handsome, to die for.

Re: Why do they have to die? (Spoiler for Brokeback)

A great deal of romance films end in tragedy, and at least the one that do end in tragedy tend to have a greater chance of being good, since it means they're not romantic comedies.

And speaketh not the name of Brokeback Mountain, plz.

Btw, this thread is kind of a spoiler for this film as well, including the subject line (which also spoils Brokeback Mountain).

Re: Why do they have to die? (Spoiler for Brokeback)

I'd say the subject of line is more than "kind of a spoiler," though he said "they" so perhaps he was trying to be coy (or just careless). Even though I saw this film before reading the spoiler, I expected someone to die here because it is, after all, a war film and an excellent one at that, unlike some Hollywoodized Western romances whose name I won't utter here.

Yeah, I was deliberately understating. smile.gif
