I think it's the first option you listed. He's turning down challenging roles. I imagine it gets tiring after a while to put that much work and effort into a role.
He's Nicholas Cage, he's famous, any movie he does is going to make him money, as if he needs it. Maybe he's just kinda done.
Reminds me of Matthew McConaughey. He used to be really good, and then just sorta quit and fell into the romantic comedy gig over and over again. Who knows. Maybe he/they just get tired of the hard work of an extreme role after a while and shift to autopilot for the paychecks.

He sure has! He's been great in the last few movies he's been in. Amazing in Dallas Buyer's Club and Interstellar.
I'm glad too, he's always been good, so it's nice to see him recognized.
I actually read an interview since then where he said it wasn't by choice. He blamed it on the age bracket of actors he was in. He was usually considered, but the "other guys" usually got the role instead, so he took what he could get.

I think the paychecks are bigger for routine action flicks than for smart films. Wider audience. Bell curve and all.

well, yeah he is a human being who needs to pay bills, but nobody forced him to spend so much money on property and what not. If he used his money wisely, he wouldn't be forced to do so many *beep* movies. Doing something for the pure fun of it is one thing, but doing something out of desperation is something else entirely.

exactly, he has no one to blame but himself. Thank god for him that he's an actor in big demand (at least that's what I'm assuming based on the number of movies he's in)

As someone else noted Nicolas Cage has big time money problems. He can't pick and choose his film roles - he needs to work. Even though some of his films have been bad I still check out anything that he does
Another actor that comes to mind is Johnny Depp who has appeared in some questionable films. Don't know if he has financial issues or just bad judgement.

Hmm I'm going to have to give Bad Lieutenant another chance. I watched a bit of it and pretty much gave up after 1/2 hour or so.

Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans starts out seeming like a relatively normal movie and gets more like Adaptation (and more like, say, Crank) as it goes along.

i just thought of his performance in this film. he is spectacular and unbelievable and so captivating in this film it's one of his best performances.
he plays crazy extremely well and better than maybe anyone.

Man, I watched this and logged in to make the same comment. How can an actor capable of this performance turn in so many dead fish performances? I've seen him in so much crap, I'd forgotten what he's capable of.

Well in the case of ghost rider he is actually a fan of the comic which would explain he want to do the film. But yes it has been a long time since he has really acted to his best ability. This film, leaving las vegas and matchstick men are particularly good (he really nails the felling of having ocd in matchstick men without turning it into a joke).

I haven't seen all of his films but in my opinion this was his last best work, at least thus far, and perhaps the best of his career.

The big money lies in action filmsso I suppose that's why he's done so many. I'd like to see him do some more creative roles. When the material is good, he really shines.

here's the problem and what ended his career he made too many mindless action and comic book movies in a row that were **** movies. after a while hollywood gives up on you being a successful actor. you can make one bad movie but two in row is to many for hollywood.

So what happened? Why the waste of such great talent on trash like GhostRider? Either he insists on turning down challenging roles or all the directors overlook him, yet the talent is obvious, it's sad to see reallyI think we as an audience missed out, and could/should have seen many more great performances from him.
