Under the Same Moon : Exact city in Mexico where Carlitos lives?
Re: Exact city in Mexico where Carlitos lives?
I don't think they mentioned the city where Carlitos lives.
I remember watching at the very end of the credits, and I think there was an aknowledgement to the town of Tequisquiapan, Queretaro.

Re: Exact city in Mexico where Carlitos lives?
i remember seeing a sign that said Ciudad Juarez (right on the border near El Paso, Texas) when the young couple was taking Carlitos, but remember they had been driving a while before they got there, so its got to be somewhere close by it wasnt juarez though because thats where my family is from and it doesnt look exactly like that town does.
yay for scary movies.

Re: Exact city in Mexico where Carlitos lives?
Just saw the movie and it was incredible.
As for you question, I didn't see where they specifically said what town he was from. (Actually, it really doesn't matter). I live in El Paso and cross the border to Juarez all the time (next time will be tomorrow). I am familiar with all of the border crossings in the area as well as many towns throughout Northern Mexico and the State of Chihuahua in particular.
Here's my 2 cents for an answer:
They entered through the port of entry in Juarez/El Paso. The chicanos were in Mexico for only a couple of days, so they'd have to be pretty close to the Mexico/US border itself. They even personally gave the kid a ride through the border. It wouldn't be logical for the chicanos to travel any furthur south than Juarez to get what they were after.
As you leave Juarez to the south, the next town of any size would be Villa Ahumada, which is a small town a couple of hours drive south of Juarez, and then Ciudad Chihuahua, which is a big modern city. As you leave Juarez to the west on the road to Nuevo Casas Grandes, the first little towns you'll hit are Ascencion and Janos. It would be more logical to cross over into Columbus, New Mexico from these towns. If you leave Juarez to the east there are a couple little towns which are basically suburbs of Juarez that parallel the Rio Grande before the highway deadends. One of these towns is called El Porvenir.
His elementary school (Primaria) was named Cuauhtemoc. There is a town called Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua a hundred miles or so to the west of Ciudad Chihuahua, but Cuauhtemoc is also a very popular name in Northern Mexico.
I don't think his hometown really matchs any of them
Actually the scenes from the town that the kid was in could be Anytown, Mexico, even in a bigger city like Juarez or Chihuahua. In other word, even in a bigger city like Juarez or Chihuahua, there's a mixture of modern city with pockets of the ANYTOWN, Mexico seen in this movie.
However, the border crossing was definately NOT any one of the ones around here. If you cross the border at any of the bridges (there are several crosasings between El Paso and Juarez), you're basically in middle of a city already. The scene where they stopped alongside the road and hid him didn't make any sense, especially if they were crossing at a Juarez/El Paso crossing.
Also, the scenary did not look right for this area.
It's interesting to note that all of the international border crossings in the El Paso/Juarez are all bridges that crosses over the Rio Grande. The only exception is the Santa Teresa crossing a little to the west in New Mexico. Even then, the border crossing scene did not look totally authentic for the El Paso area. I'm intimately familiar with the alleys and backroads of El Paso, and had a hard time recognizing where all of the prostitutes were at. Segundo Barrio ?? Sorry, didn't click with me either.
Another funny thing to mention is how they were asked for their passports at the border. Did you know they only recently started doing that? It's been maybe 2 months or so since they started that. Usually what happened is you would drive up to the booth and they would say something like "Citizenship" and if you reply American, they either let it go at that or start asking you a bunch of questions. If you have a resident alien card or are a Mexican national visiting El Paso for the day, you show your paperwork to the inspector. If they're suspicious and want to search your bags, they'll put a card on your windshild and direct you to a secondary inspection area where another set of inspectors will get with you over what raised the initial inspector's suspicions (Immigration, smuggling drugs, smuggling avocados, etc.). The other standard phrase they use is "What was the purpose of your visit to Mexico?" They really don't care, so you just answer "visiting family" and leave it at that.
One thing they forget to mention in this film is the "second hurdle." Even if you get across the international border into El Paso, you still have to pass a Border Patrol checkpoint as you enter the interior of the US. From El Paso to Tuscon, the main one would be on I-10 just west of Las Cruces, New Mexico. If he got on that bus in El Paso, he probably would have been questioned when the bus reached the Border Patrol checkpoint the other side of Las Cruces.
BOTTOM LINE: The actual town itself is not really important and that's why it was not specifically mentioned. Therefore the town he's from can be a lot of towns in Mexico. One can pick the movie apart for factual errors, but that takes away from the spirit of the story.
Great movie. Have to see it again..
