The beginning of creative outlet for our fandom!
Re: The HALE/THORNTON WEDDING, A Group Fan-Fiction
So I know I'm extremely late to the party here, but I just finished reading this entire thread for the first time, and there is some amazing fan fiction here! I thought what everyone wrote seemed extremely true to character (especially for Margaret and John), and gave me all kinds of warm fuzzy feelings. So well done!
Is anyone willing to try a wedding night one? I would be all over that as well! I always wonder when I watch period dramas and they get married, when they've barely kissed, if they will make love on their wedding night. On one hand, it would have been expected of them in that time period to do so but I can see some period guys (like Thornton, or Mr. Tillney for example) waiting until she was comfortable to do so. I know it would have been a shock to me to go from kissing to sex all at once! Especially if the women were not educated on what to do (just lay there??) or how it worked. Just a thought.

Re: The HALE/THORNTON WEDDING, A Group Fan-Fiction
Hi Mille! We're happy you enjoyed our maiden voyage in fan fiction on this forum, especially the warm fuzzy feelings! We endeavoured to remain true to the characters as portrayed in the mini and the book, so we're glad you noticed!
As far as I know, and I may be wrong since I'm not here very much lately, we've haven't done a wedding night story. I noticed Genie is re-posting a story that she wrote a while back, but I can't recall if it contains a wedding night sceneGenie?
Thanks for the kind words, Mille!

Hi Mille!
Always nice to have new readers come to this board Welcome!
Regarding your question
Please bear in mind that Victorian society was very inhibited when it came to sex; "officially" it was considered awkward at best, and possibly distasteful, and only put up with for the sake of procreation
A "good girl" at the time would either not have known about sex at all, or would likely have been told that it was not enjoyable, but that it was her duty in marriage to put up with her husband's baser naturewith motherhood as its sole reward.
And as for the men I don't know, really.
A wedding night at the time might well have been memorable, but for all the wrong reasons Couples, who were mutually attached and at ease with each other, would have found their way eventually, I suppose (as throughout the ages). But people at the time wouldn't necessarily have considered good sex as an integral part of a good marriageand happily settle for "consensual".
So, the point is Sexual relations didn't feature as much in male-female relationships then as they do today; and they wouldn't usually further a story set in the 19th century that is trying to be true to the periodso writing explicitly about the wedding night would feel a bit gratuitous and out of character in the context of North & South, IMHO.

Well said, Birds!

Re: The HALE/THORNTON WEDDING, A Group Fan-Fiction
Thank you both for the kind welcome! And thank you, birds_14 for the information - very interesting and makes a lot of sense.
as far as writing a wedding night chapter, I understand and respect where you are coming from in that it would seem out of place in a Victorian story. At the same time, I would by no means expect a lusty Outlander-esque wedding night, but rather one that would be true to the time and true to both characters. After all, by your description they would have almost certainly made love to fulfill their duties.
I can't help but wonder how John would feel about it - whether or not he would put his husband duties above Margaret's comfort (assuming, I think justifiably, that though she loves him she would feel uncomfortable about it), and if Margaret would be aware of her wifely duties, especially considering that she has few women to receive that sort of advice from.

Hi Mille!
We were discussing this in another thread recently and decided that maybe Margaret would get advice from her aunt or more likely her married cousin Edith.

Re: The HALE/THORNTON WEDDING, A Group Fan-Fiction
Good point! I can't imagine her discussing those things with her aunt! haha. Even discussing them at all during that time would probably would be incredibly awkward and blush-worthy ;) Reminds me of a recent Downton Abbey episode.
Re: The HALE/THORNTON WEDDING, A Group Fan-Fiction
Here is that thread Laura mentioned Mille if you are interested: http://www.imdb.com/board/10417349/board/thread/250276924?d=250276924#250276924
And feel free to continue the story and "tackle" the wedding night since this wedding thread is a "group fan-fiction" work after all!
P.S: I think I should mention also, that Heartfelt, Birds and Laura are all huge fans of "Outlander" and most of us (except Birds, who I believe hasn't seen the series yet) are all fans of Downton Abbey as well!

Re: The HALE/THORNTON WEDDING, A Group Fan-Fiction
Thanks! I'll definitely check that out soon :)
Would that I could, but alas, I am no writer. Perhaps I could take a shot but I am worried I wouldn't do the story justice.
Yay!! I'm in the middle of Voyager right now and have seen S1 of Outlander, and I adore it.
So you probably know what scene in Downton Abbey I'm talking about haha.

None of us are writers either Mille. But if you have a story idea, and can find the motivation enough, then all you need is the time you can do it!
All of us here felt the same way until we gave it a go Not to worry, I encourage yougive it a shot! Let the inspiration flow!
Re: The HALE/THORNTON WEDDING, A Group Fan-Fiction
There are lots of N&S fan fiction writers online who have tackled the wedding night Mille. You can find stories on sites such as C19.
Enjoy Voyager.
