Lost : What is the incident? Smokey questions and a few others..
Re: What is the incident? Smokey questions and a few others..
If Nadia had lived Sayid would not have gone back to the island.
Re: What is the incident? Smokey questions and a few others..
I'll give my interpretation of how to answer these questions. Lost, like other shows such as Twin Peaks or The Leftovers, tries to keep things ambiguous as to allow for audience interpretation, so some people might disagree with what I say.
I've watched the show four times, but it's been a while so it isn't fresh in my mind, unfortunately. Still, I'll try my best!
"What is the incident exactly? Is it the purge? The hydrogen bomb? Did the bomb even go off? Or is it just an electromagnetic leak?"
The incident is what we see at the end of season five, when the Dharma Initiative drills into a pocket of the Island's electromagnetic energy. Their plan was to harness this pocket of energy, but they screwed it up and instead repurposed the Swan station in order to contain it. In my interpretation the bomb did not go off, and was itself repurposed as the Swan's "failsafe measure" which is why a section of the Swan set off a Geiger counter.
"Why are pieces of the film missing?"
This one, I think, is up to you. Either the film was damaged, or the footage was redacted.
"Why is Chang so concerned about "another incident" and does this have anything to do with time travel?"
The electromagnetic energy could be damaging. I don't know if Chang was concerned about time travel but clearly the Source could facilitate it so that's an interesting thought.
"Also, does the incident relate in anyway to the smoke monster or its creation? (Some fans have said that it created it)."
No, the smoke monster predates it.
"Also, can the smoke monster be viewed outside of evil and good? Like in ancient egyptian times, it is depicted by Anubis?"
I think so, yes. I don't think it's necessarily good or evil.
"Some fans have said it is tied to fate/predestination while Jacob represents free will?"
These themes are definitely intertwined with these characters. I don't know if it's as simple as Jacob stands for one and Smokey stands for the other but it's a good observation.
"Btw, Jacob seems like a real *beep* especially in Season 6, where it is revealed he is the one who killed Nadia, or at least let her be killed while saving Sayyid. Why would Jacob let Widmore's man kill Nadia?"
Jacob is a deeply flawed guy, for sure. He wants someone to take over for him, and he doesn't think someone would want to if they have existing ties, so he messes with people's lives and brings them to the Island looking for someone suitable.
"And on top of that why would Jacob "invite" Widmore back to the island? Or was Widmore lying to Ben about that in the episode before the finale?"
To me, Widmore got kicked off the Island and thought he could use capitalism to buy or force his way back. This failed, but Jacob decided he might be useful so he approached Widmore granting him return on the condition he stop being such a jerk. I found this thread to be rushed and underdeveloped in the end.
"And for the love of god, who is Matthew Abaddon? Friend or Foe? What is his purpose? He seems evil when talking to Hurley, he works for evil Widmore yet he seems to be helping John."
I saw Abaddon as someone putatively working for Widmore, but actually working for Jacob.
"It seems to me that both Ben and Widmore were trying to use John for their own reasons and were lying to him."
Yes, John is believed to be special, so people like Ben try to manipulate him to get something they want.
"And is smokey a security system?"
In my interpretation essentially yes, though not it isn't technological.
"Is it Jacob's adopted mother? Or did it just manifest as a woman who pretended to be his adopted mother?"
In my interpretation the Smoke Monster is tasked with protecting the Island, and is created by immersing one's self in the Source. Jacob threw his brother's dying body into the Source and created him. So basically the Smoke Monster doesn't want to protect the Island as a result. He can't accept this fate because he just wants to leave.
Some say their mom was a previous Smoke Monster, but idk if I agree with this. If she was, how could she be killed?
"Why does she view the MIB as special over Jacob?"
In Lost, characters are shaped often by ways their parents abused them. She said he's special, in my opinion, because he's independent and not a Mama's boy like Jacob. Mean thing to say, but she's often kinda mean.

It seems insane that Widmore would be invited by Jacob, if that were true, Ben would be right to kill Jacob. I mean, he would deserve it. Widmore is far worse than Ben.
And for the love of god, who is Matthew Abaddon? Friend or Foe? What is his purpose? He seems evil when talking to Hurley, he works for evil Widmore yet he seems to be helping John.
It seems to me that both Ben and Widmore were trying to use John for their own reasons and were lying to him.
This stuff is driving me crazy?
