Question about Hidden Figures (2016)

Did John Glenn get to see this wonderful movie before he died?
One hopes that he did, since it makes a wonderful epilogue to his great life story.

We just came from seeing it, and it was a great movie.
It may be my pick for best picture at this point, but I should let it sink in before making a total judgement on it.

-

IMO, it was MUCH better than the extremely over-rated La La Land and Moonlight.

IMO, it may be competitive with Manchester by the Sea, and Fences

We have also seen Lion with no clear opinion.

Arrival has not played in our region of the country, and if I see Hacksaw Ridge, I may have to go aloneit may be too brutal for my wife's taste.

Re: Question about Hidden Figures (2016)

The richly entertaining, impeccably acted, extremely well crafted HIDDEN FIGURES is a beautiful and inspiring feelgood movie with a smashing ensemble cast, and it is a genuine crowd pleaser that has been a surpise box-office hit kijii.

I rated it a heartfelt 8 out of 10 - the same rating I gave HACKSAW RIDGE, ARRIVAL and FREE STATE OF JONES, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

But I would be lying if I said I enjoyed it more, or thought it a better film, than the dazzling, romantically enchanting and musically delightful LA LA LAND, the low budget MOONLIGHT, the brilliant, deeply insightful and provocative documentaries 13TH AND O.J.: MADE IN AMERICA or the achingly romantic LOVING - all of which I rated 10/10.

I also thought the likes of the emotionally devastating, richly theatrical and scrupulously faithful to its source FENCES, the violent, exciting exciting and surprisingly witty HELL OR HIGH WATER, the sprawling LION, the emotionally intense and deeply moving MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, the joyous SING STREET and the funny, sad, ultimately heartwarming indie gem CAPTAIN FANTASTIC - all of which I rated 9/10, were better films.

Of course none of these films are as commercial as HIDDEN FIGURES. While HIDDEN FIGURES might not have the cutting political edge of 13TH, O.J. MADE IN AMERICA, LOVING or even the stunning and emotionally potent MOONLIGHT it is certainly a film about hitorical racial injustice and prejudice in America which even some, perhaps many, conservative white Americans can feel comfortable with. This is not necessarily a bad thing, and hopefully its story and its box-office success will help in the battle to change the mindsets of fearful older white Americans and ignorant younger Americans who have struggled to move past the racial views and perceptions their parents instilled in them from an early age.

PS. My missus fell asleep during HIDDEN FIGURES - but she suffers from ill health and was very tired the night we saw it (she will have to watch it again sometime when it comes out on Blu Ray). She has also seen all the films mentioned in my post - except for LA LA LAND - which she refused to watch. She enjoyed FREE STATE OF JONES, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC - she might well be Viggo Mortense's number one fan in the world; she adores him and he's her favorite actor, SING STREET, FENCES and O.J. MADE IN AMERICA. The rest of the films mentioned here, not so much - except for one.

That one is HACKSAW RIDGE, which she absolutely loved passionately and unconditionall and thought was easily the best film she saw in 2016. I would suggest you make sure you take your wife alongwith you to watch it kijii.

Re: Question about Hidden Figures (2016)

We also saw Loving but thought it was too low key to be interesting.

I loved Captain Fantasic, but didn't mention it since it was not nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.
The movie held my interest from beginning to end. I loved Viggo Mortensen's performance too. But, there is a lot of competition in the Best Actor category, and I would think he would be a dark horse candidate this year.

I was able to see Captain Fantasic, Florence Foster Jenkins, and Hell or High Water by streaming them from Amazon Prime.

For me, Florence Foster Jenkins was a complete cipher as I stated in my review.
In fact, it was less than a cipher, it was a turnoff.

Re: Question about Hidden Figures (2016)

From what I hear, cigarette smoking has been completely scrubbed from HIDDEN FIGURES a movie set in the 1960s, when smoking was omnipresent in American society It was literally everywhere! (To include the NASA control center during launches.)

I was alive in the '60s and remember the time vividly. People even smoked in hospital rooms (as long as oxygen wasn't in use).

To me, scrubbing cigarette smoking from a movie set in the early '60s is like making a film set in 1776 Boston with the mandate to never show a single tricorn hat.

It's just stupid.

Send her to the snakes!

Re: Question about Hidden Figures (2016)

I finally Googled the question of the OP. Here is the answer I got:

NEW YORK, Dec. 12 (UPI) Hidden Figures director Ted Melfi says he had hoped to share his NASA-themed film with John Glenn before the pioneering astronaut died, but it wasn't meant to be. Glenn died Thursday at age 95, just a few weeks before the movie is scheduled to hit theaters.Dec 12, 2016
