I saw the film last night at the Toronto International Film Festival and the director and lead actors were there for a Q&A after the screening. They said that the film was actually shot before the M.I.A. video.

The story is basically what you wrote above, but it's also very different from the music video. The director described the film as a 'modern, gay romantic comedy'. While there was definitely humour in the film, I wouldn't say it was a comedy. But modern, gay and romantic, absolutely.

It's definitely interesting, yet difficult to watch at times, but not at all because of the violence (which there isn't much of). More so because we're forced to follow these characters whose motives and actions aren't always necessarily clear or sympathetic. But I think that makes for a more interesting and challenging experience.
