The Bye Bye Man : "Based on a true story"…lol really? What?

I love those claims, based on a true story like: 'once there was a guy who lived in a house'

Truest story I know

Like Psycho and Texas Chainsaw Massacre were both based on the SAME true story, Ed Gein.

Psycho was actually based on Gein, but TCM has NOTHING to do with Gein, other than his making of the face mask, which he didn't wear all the time.

But obviously when I saw Bye Bye Man, it's heavily influenced by the Slender Man foolishness where the two girls tried to kill a friend as a sort-of sacrifice.

I also thought about the Shadow Man segment from the 1985 Twilight Zone.

Not to mention Nightmare on Elm Street is as well. It's something that gets tacked onto many horror films adn tehy have jsut a minor tangential connection to the story but use it for marketing purposes to make it seem scarier since it was "true".

"Based on a true story" was cooked up by some drunk dude in the Marketing Department. Most people who work in marketing are alcoholics.

Just making use of the "false document" technique, where the based on a true story claim is actually part of the fiction. Makes it creepier.

This thing may be so bad, and not in a remotely fun way, that it actually won't even manage to make back it's relatively small budget!

The ONLY way I see this making money is if a million people want to see it just to experience one of the worst horror films ever made and laugh with their drunk friends.

Based on the book The Bye Bye Man and Other Strange Tales author Robert Damon Schneck has maintained that it is actually real.

Schneck claims his three friends were stalked by the entity in 1990 Wisconsin while at college.

While experimenting with a Ouija board, Eli, Catherine and Jonathan were contacted by an evil albino spirit which cuts out his victims tongues and eyes carrying them in a sack.

So, it's actually based on some BS a bunch of stoned, drunk college morons made up.

"Based on a true story" is an old horror movie gag. It's a way to f with the audience and make the more gullible ones wonder if this actually happened (like when Blair Witch first came out, some people actually thought that was real for a little while.)
