Awesome scene where he has to rest because he was too high from nitrous oxide. Scene really served no purpose, only to let the audience know that the chemist likes to party, and isn't the typical boring scientist. That actor is awesome by the way. Terrific in Night Manager. Should get his own show soon.

It tells you about how "laughing gas" was treated as a toy in the beginning.

I read once that a man was laughing so much that he hit his head and was bleeding but felt no pain. The man who saw him began advertising pain free dentistry. He quickly was joined by other jumping on the wagon as competition. It became known as an anesthetic then. It was also dangerous and you could overdose.

Nitrous displaces oxygen off of hemoglobin, so it needs to be blended with at a minimum 30% O2 (minimum setting of ventilator gas blender) for continuous use. And even then, one needs to wean off it with increasingly higher concentrations of 02 than the 21% in normal air. A patient who is on 70% nitrous for a period of time who is then switched to just room air will become hypoxic quickly as the hemoglobin will be mostly carrying N2O that is being leeched from the tissues and thus not available to carry 02. There is no room in the drug culture for amateurs.

Thank you for stating that. I knew of someone who died in my college years from playing with this gas. Very sad and could have been prevented.

U remember two cases in my area from several years ago. They found one man dead in an vacant operating room at a hospital. He worked there and took one of the cylinders to get high on.

The other was two teenage boys and a girl found in a car with a stolen cylinder. They overdosed also.

I don't know of any recent deaths though.
