Desire Under the Elms by Eugene O'Neill? incest is a relatively common theme in drama and in the case of Oedipus,goes back to Sophocles over 500 BC, and it is still regularly performed it is drama, not actual abuse of anybody.

I agree. He's stalking her and trying to force her to be involved with him even though she really doesn't want to. She may be attracted to him physically because of their past, but she obviously has wanted and tried to start a new life for herself and pay for what she's done and he just won't let her. That's abusive. And creepy, of course.

The incest thing bothers me a lot too. I don't know if I can handle it visually going any farther than it already has on the show. Haha

I'm not bothered by the incest at all. It's been in many stories I've read like Flowers in the Attic and I was a big Boardwalk Empire fan and they had a mother/son incest Storyline before GOT was even on.

That said I am more than disturbed with the cannibalism. I find it to be the most disgusting and vile part of this series. When the doctor said James had bits of human flesh stuck between his teeth, I felt my stomach turn. Any mention of flesh eating I just find cringe-worthy. Even the dogs feeding off suicide victims was gross. But I completely get that this is the show. That it's suppose to push all those buttons people have and I love that.

Unlike the OP I don't find James's relationship with Zilpha boring. Unhealthy yes, not only because of the incest but also because of it's buried secrets and obsession. I don't think it's one sided and I like seeing Zilpha use her power over this very savage man like she did in the church scene.

I like that her douche of a husband is so freaked out and can't wait to see his reaction if he finds Zilpha might have had a child with James and he's the one with the bad sauce. If the boy is theirs it will add a whole new dimension to the story and I want to see how it will play out.

I do think the OP will get their wish and Lorna and James will get very close esp now that they are sharing the house and he has found out she has a trunk his dads things. Looking forward to see what direction their relationship takes..

If they have the same mother, then it is incest by default. But with different mothers, it could also be a case that they have different fathers, which I suspect will come out in the end. The show Billy and Billie is a black comedy about what happens when non-genetically related step-siblings become involved as adults.

Agree. And yet, at this point in the story, it doesn't matter, because neither knows it. Its an interesting plot thread, and I wonder what will happen when true parentage is revealed. For this, and a couple other reasons, I don't think they'll ever be free to pair up.

How did you miss that? The whole thing is called Taboo and is based around an estranged son coming home after which it is revealed in the first episode that he left because of his relationship with his half sister. That means one parent is the same. That's the central theme of the show and was set up immediately.

Yes. It is and what it does to people is devastating. Having written that, Taboo goes where the title promises. James Delaney is not a nice man, even when he promises to fix the leak in his Step-mother's bedroom. I'm not even sure he's human anymore.

The fact that this series is called 'Taboo' should have clued you into that. maybe there would be some taboo subjects?

The widow is a much better match for him I think. I didn't like her at first but but I like how we now see she's kind of ruthless in her own way but also has her own code of honour. Shes seen to take her stage career seriously (even though her audience don't) and she's doesn't have sex for money like the others

Only on IMDB can there be a complaint of no sexual chemistry between sibling characters. ;-)

I agree. We don't know how it went down when they were younger, but they're both adults now.

Well, good writing has the audience making assumptions based on what is presented, but they can also be false assumptions (ie, Sixth Sense and Bruce Willis). Lets say that James and his sister believe that they are blood related and therefore believe themselves to be sinners of a sort for their taboo behavior, and because of that they act in certain ways, perhaps separating permanently to different continents even though they love eachother. Only later then do they learn that they in fact aren't blood related. The damage though has still been done because they believed it and acted accordingly. But the show is so whack at the moment who knows.
