This was sort of an unfinished business go back to his original owner make him happy again.

Possibly. Maybe he will up to human form. I felt like my previous dog who was a brother to me was human before.

I've always thought that the dog chooses the ownerwhy I don't know. ;-)

The book, A Dog's Purpose, has a sequel, A Dog's Journey that carries Bailey's story forward and answers your question (it's a very satisfying ending, but I won't give it away).
