Rings : Spoilers! The ending
Re: Spoilers! The ending
It isn't confirmed if she was actually possessed, just alluded that that was the goal.
I didn't quite understand the purpose of her spitting up a hair ball with a cicada in it, either.
Also, the video gets sent to a bunch of people, whom ALL seem to respond at once, saying scary. Now, I have about 250 friends on FB. If I sent a random video to them, say even the ones just inline, it would take at least 60 seconds for them to watch, let alone respond saying it was scary.

Re: Spoilers! The ending
Basically Samara's soul was evil. If you go back to The Ring, the doctor asks Samara "You don't want to hurt anyone, do you?" and her response is "But I do, and I'm sorry. It won't stop". I think that Samara knew she had this evil inside her. She was apologetic for it, but she knew that her soul was evil and would continue to cause suffering.
Samara the person wasn't evil though, the reason she sought out Julia was that she wanted to basically escape the curse. By burning Samara's bones, the evil soul found a new vessel, Julia.

@OnceUponADoctor
a) I love your user name.
b) I'm genuinely curious - how do *you* differentiate a "soul" from a "person"? I'm agnostic but I do believe in souls and the soul is basically what harbours a body's individuality. Samara the person is inextricably intertwined with Samara the soul, evil and all. Or do you think Samara was possessed by an evil that was separate from herself?

Thanks!
Basically it's the second point. I guess you can say that part of Samara's soul belongs truly to her, this is the part that wants a mother and wants to be saved. However another part of Samara's soul (let's call it her proto-soul") is this deep, unrelenting evil and Samara realizes that this evil is within her and is apologetic about it but knows that it is something that persists. The parts are intertwined but different.
I do think that sometimes she can sometimes use this proto-soul to benefit herself though. After viewing this movie, I interpret the Samara we saw in the Ring two as a being tapping into that inhumane and evil side in order to fulfill a very human need (having someone that loves you) by the end she lets it overtake her which is why when she screams "MOMMY" as she climbs the well, it sounds so demonic.
I feel like this movie was similar but different. The human side of the soul wanted "rebirth" into a higher plane, and the proto-soul wanted "rebirth" into the world to further spread the suffering. However I think that in this one, Samara realized that she couldn't use the same tactics she did to achieve her goal. This is why when Samara says "Julia, don't leave me." it sounds like a little girl and not a demon. She has learned based on her experience with Rachel that she can't fully use this proto-soul to get what she wants. By burning the bones, both parts of Samara's soul are appeased.
That's my analysis of it anyway.

Re: Spoilers! The ending
Wasn't Julia just a means to an end? The don't leave me line didn't end up making sense anyway since it was Samara who ultimately killed the Priest, not Julia. Her words to Julia didn't give her some sort of rush of adrenaline to push him off of her.
Also, how was Samara able to kill her dad without him having watched the tape? Furthermore, if she had the power to return his vision, why did she wait until then to do so, why not do it anytime prior?

Re: Spoilers! The ending
See I personally do not think there was some sort of internal struggle.
I think it could be loosely interpreted that she enjoyed causing pain, based on her little smile when she is speaking to the doctor, but aside from that, it seemed like majority of the issues she caused the Morgan's were involuntary. She couldn't help what she was doing.
She loved her mother, hated her father because the father loved the horses more than her, and due to the visions she was inflicting on Anna, and her causing the prize winning horses to drown, her adoptive family hated her, ultimately killing her.
I don't think the "evil" part really became her main motif until Anna tried killing her. At that point, she was like "*beep* this, I'm about to *beep* everyone up."
That was the main idea of the first film, that she simply wanted to be heard. She had images in her head and the only way she could relay them was by putting them into the heads of others. The deep seated hate didn't start to emerge until things around her went south (her father liking the horses more, the mental hospital, being locked in the barn).
