Rings : How would YOU have made Rings?
Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
I would started the movie with a bunch of teenagers hanging out at a campfire in Shelter Mountain Inn and one of them begins to talk about the cursed videotape. The other teens laugh it off since they retort that cursed videotapes are not a thing in 2017 but one of them creepily confesses that they watched the online version of the videotape. They ask who uploaded it and they say that some people from Seattle uploaded it (hint hint Rachel and Aidan) to save themselves from the curse but were later killed in a car crash under unknown reasons.
One of them becomes bored and decides to stay inside the cabin, to watch some rom com movies or whatever by themselves. Suddenly, they hear a scream coming out of the cabin and the teens investigate, only to drop dead with their faces contorted with fear at the sight of seeing SAMARA. Samara proceeds to kill each of the teens by staring at them. One of them tries to throw logs on Samara but she burns images into his mind, which "convinces" him that the log will impale him. The teen tries to get rid of this image but accidentally trips and falls into the campfire and is burnt to death as Samara. Samara continually teleports everywhere in Shelter Mountain Inn and ruthlessly kills the helpless teens who try to escape.
A teen girl who has never seen the tape tries to get her boyfriend who has seen it to safety but the boyfriend slips and is paralysed. The boyfriend is killed when he sees Samara's face as the girl screams. Two months later, paranormal enthusiasts (name them Julia and Holt for the sake of this movie) meet the teen girl in a mental hospital. The teen girl tells them that they will have to watch the tape, burn it and then let them be the final sacrifice for Samara so that the curse will end.
Julia and Holt are reluctant to be the final sacrifice and pass the tape to the people that have caused trouble in their lives. As they run out of people to pass the tape to, Julia goes to Samara's grave and tries to bury it in sea since she thinks this will end the curse. However, she doesn't realise that it is where Samara's biological father lives, who is a sea demon.
The sea demon dad was revealed to be the one who opened the well despite Rachel closing it at the end of The Ring 2 and he convinced Samara to possess Rachel and Aidan into uploading the videotape online for the world to see and for her to be able to find a perfect host to be reborn. Julia receives a vision and realises that Samara won't stop killing until there is a mother that finally loves her. Julia knows this is *beep* and and tries to leave but the sea demon dad attacks her. At the same time, Samara emerges from her phone and kills Holt as he tries to save Julia.
Julia falls unconscious from the attack and realises that she is pregnant. She gives birth and is horrified to see the miscarried fetus of a resurrected Samara. Julia tries to throw the fetus in the bin but as she leaves, she hears a faint voice saying "everyone will suffer". The movie ends with the implication that the resurrected Samara will relive her murderous killing spree when she was alive on Moesko Island.
This is what I personally think the movie should be like but please comment on my fanfic attempt and tell me where I can improve etc.

Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
I would have abandoned the whole rebirth element, and focused on the 7 Club aspect. That was really the only interesting thing about this film.
I would have had the focus be on tension and suspense, instead of cheap jump scares. I would have ditched the lame ass CGI visions the main character had, and utilized a more organic approach like the original.
I would have hired multiple people to review not only my script (and unfinished film), in addition to the previous entries to ensure there were no plot holes.
I would have made up my mind on whether or not I was ignoring part 2, instead of leaving it ambiguous and thus causing plot holes.
I would have removed the lame "spider walk" gimmick as well as the black water crap. I would have utilized the victims being killed without only her being able to come out of a television.
And I would have hired actors who could actually act lol

Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
I was hoping for this movie to have an investigative mystery element but this movie seems to be the embodiement of every cheap cash grabbing jump scare littered "horror movie". What would your ideal cast be?
Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
Hard to say about the cast, I mean, Johnny Galecki is a decent actor, but his role was simply strange. It's simply a matter of casting people who have range.
Naomi Watts was able to portray a bitch, a mother, a hero, afraid, etc. Even the actor who played Aiden had more range than the actors in this film. That always bothers me. You can have a subpar movie with great actors, but a movie with bad acting really sticks out like a sore thumb. It actually detracts from the film.
The original had the investigative aspect, and Everytime this one tried to, instead of following through on that, they made the main character have some cheap vision to help provide exposition. The original was strong because they knew how to tell a story without that cheap gimmick.

Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
I would have picked up the pacing a little bit - it was slow, but not the kind of slow that causes a sense of dread and foreboding.
I would have fleshed out the characters more fully. At the end, *why* do we care about saving Holt or Julia? They're pretty flat and they didn't sell me on their relationship. Gabriel - how did he figure out to copy and share the film? Why did Skye so long to watch it? MOTIVATION, people, what was anyone's motivation?
Even though I don't remember that much about the original, I do remember the tension I felt. Naomi Watts' character was a grieving aunt and a mother desperate to save herself and her son. The fact that her character was also a journalist added to the momentum.
For this one, I would have spent more time with Gabriel and Skye - possibly as a flashback when Holt and Julia go back to Gabriel'sshow how Gabriel discovered all the info. Something more human - interesty.

Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
The cursed video was already an urban legend in 2002, and judging by the random other girl on the plane who saw the tape, the video was somewhat well known at this point. It's entirely possible that he merely did a Google Search.
Holt and Julia were paper thin plot devices to attempt to tell what someone vaguely describes as a story. The audience had no reason to care for them, they were not dynamic or fleshed out. Rachel had a chaotic back story with Noah, a strained relationship with her son, a snarky relationship with her boss, and a grieving family after her neice passed.
In Rings, Holt and Julia merely are dating. Julia makes some comment about her needing to live at home because her mom needed her, yet she leaves and we never hear anything about her mom, not a phone call, a text, nothing. These characters simply were not developed and the acting (moreso Julia) was a wreck. Sure, Holt was nice to look at, but from a film franchise which made strides in having fleshed out characters and a sort of realism within a supernatural world, having some hunky stereotype seemed cheap.

Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
LOL - I genuinely wondered about Julia's mom when Julia took off with the car in the middle of the night. I think I was more concerned about her than anyone else in the film - and we never even saw her.
Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
She was cut from the film actually! I wonder if the scene(s) with Julia's mom will end up on the blu ray/DVD release.
Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
Oh yeah, I forgot that her mother had scenes initially. Probably would have helped the character development quite a bit.
Sorta like the entire cut subplot of the Inn Keeper from the first one.

Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
Yup! There's actually an interview online where you can hear some of that backstory.
Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
See that's interesting to me, because that proves that there was at least two different plotlines involving the innkeeper.
That interview states that he was to be a child killer or whatever, and that Rachel gives him the copy of Aiden's video.
However, in the deleted scenes, Noah finds his body floating in a canoe behind a cabin, murdered by Samara.
I'd like to see both of the original scripts.

Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
Not that interview, sorry, read a different one with the actor who played the Innkeeper in the first one.
But yes, the interview you posted goes to show Julia had an entire back story which was cut.

Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
I know what you're talking about. In The Ring, originally Noah goes to Shelter Mountain at some point and finds the innkeeper dead in a canoe on the lake after having been killed by Samara. This scene can be found on the DVD for The Ring in the "Don't watch this" feature that cobbles the deleted scenes together into a short film.
On a separate note, The Ring originally started with a scene of Rachel interviewing a child molester in prison. At the end of the film, she goes back to the prison and gives him the tape to watch. These scenes were removed after test screenings and don't exist anywhere today.

Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
Does that exist in Script form?
Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
It doesn't. The only thing that remains is during Noah's death scene. When he lifts his coffee mug, the newspaper its on has a headline about it and a picture of the actor that played the criminal.
Funnily enough they had 3 different endings for The Ring, that one, the one that was in the movie, and another that has Rachel leave Aidan's copy in a video rental store (that ending was shot and is on the dvd with the other deleted scenes).

Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
I do know about that one. I just found a shooting draft for the Ring just now, and the dialogue for the opening is slightly different. Gonna read through and see what I can find.
Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
Ah that's an interesting read! Strangest changes are that Richard Morgan is called Victor and it takes place in Massachusetts and Maine instead of Washington.
Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
Was there an interview about the whole prison plot? Where did you hear that from
Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
Do the Chris Cooper scenes still exist?
Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
She already said no
Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
Sorry for my mistake.
Re: How would YOU have made Rings?
I would have focused a lot more on Johnny Galecki and the research of life after death with Samara getting madder and madder about people cheating her out of her kills.
