Snow Cake : The Snow Cake

The Snow Cake

I don't know why, but when she takes the snow cake out of the freezer, something about the way she said "Now that is interesting" made me want to cry. Did anyone else react that way? Maybe it was her expression or something but it gave me a lump in my throat!

Re: The Snow Cake

Really? That scene is enlightening to me, it is a very good ending for the movie. It delivers such a warm and friendly feeling at the same time being funny.. Finally Alex is interesting! I found that scene also a little sad; just as she realized that there was something in Alex that could be useful for her (= she could have him as afriend) Alex had to leave and you cannot know if she ever meets him again. But it's just wonderful that it is that way. I hate Disney happyhappy endings :)

Re: The Snow Cake

Oh no, I meant that it WAS enlightening for me - it's just that it made me feel more emotional than I expected. I felt the exact same things you said about it - I wonder if Alex stayed in her life after the story ends? I guess it's up to us to decide if would have or not if the story really happened. Plus, that ice cake looked kind of delicious!

Re: The Snow Cake

Oh, okay :) Now I got it, first when I read your message I got it all wrong I guess. But yeah, it is a scene worth crying for. It is really emotional. And yep, the cake really does look delicious! I would eat it right away - it was so pure and white.

Re: The Snow Cake

yes that's a good point, I noticed a slightly less bossy (for want of a much better word) tone in her interactions near the end, and you're so right about her expression when looking at the cake. astonishment and then maybe a tiny hint of pride or amusement at alan rickman's character for his creativity perhaps?

Re: The Snow Cake

The reason this scene touched me is because it demonstrated Alan Rickman's character's sensitivity. He understood and accepted her for who she was, which I think is one of the primary themes in this film. Further, he validated her as a person when he recognized what would thrill her, and he delivered it. We all want to be understood, but the gift of truly listeningnot only to the words, but to the heartis a rarity.

Re: The Snow Cake

I think that both Alex and Linda went through a major transformation in the film. Alex, who seemed jaded and guilt-ridden, was able to redeem himself as a good guy who was caught in a tragic situation. Linda, who at first is withdrawn and cold, is able to peel away at the surface to reveal someone incredibly tender and loving. I think the expression at the end of the film sums up this full-circle transformation.

Re: The Snow Cake

Rickman as Alex in the film was just magnificent without ever being patronizing, mawkish or goody-goody. Their relationship - learning how to relate and live with each other- was just fascinating.

And I echo others' appreciation for Weaver's perf. into which the actress disappeared and the character emerged complete. Beautiful and believable.

Re: The Snow Cake

I agree and I loved the idea of Alex making the snow cakeit was really well done and must have taken a lot of time and effort. Especially considering what she told him about how joyous eating snow makes her feel. It was like him giving her millions of happy moments, much like the way VIvienne knew she'd react to the "sparklies."
