Animal hoarders - are the american animal protection laws too weak ?

Why is it that apparent animal abuse on this show rarely lead to legal repercussions ? Is that the laws are to weak or is it a matter of not enough evidence (as some animals are found decomposed)? I know that in some states it's legal to keep big cats as pets so the animal protection doesn't seem to be as strict (for lack of better words) as it is here in Sweden.

The american laws are a joke. There is a show called "Animal cops" that deal with animal abuse and the stuff the ppl get away with is sickening. I've only heard of a few ppl actually being arrested (but even those serve only a small amount of time), most times they get away with a small fine or less. Usually just signing over the animal to authorities is as far as it goes. Most of those people end up getting new animals sooner or later.

It's enraging. The laws aren't the problem, it's the enforcement. The cops can only collect evidence and take in the animals (under certain extreme instances, I've seen them leave abused animals in those conditions because they didn't have the right to take them away). It's the judges that screw it all up. It's almost comical how the defendants show up and deny everything even though there are pictures and video and medical evidence and the judge rarely does anything serious to them, like I said usually they just sign over the animal legally and that's as far as it goes. The only thing good about the show is that you see how these animals that have been treated so badly are rehabbed and adopted and become happy and healthy but even that is bittersweet knowing what they had to go through and the scumbags that did it are walking free, probably with another animal they're doing the same thing too.

A lot depends on where you live. Here in California, we have very good animal protection lawswe tend to lead the rest of the country in terms of things like humane treatment of animals in the [disgustingly cruel] meat and dairy industries, for example. We also don't take lightly animal cruelty/neglect when it comes to pets, or fighting, or pretty much anything else, and people get prison sentences for breaking the laws. We're even legislating out of existence the bastion of cruelty, SeaWorld.

It's not only laws but the mass amount of animals in the country there just isn't enough time or resources to check everyone and everything. "Estimates for cats alone range up to 70 million."

I think they should pull the plug when it comes to animals and children. They're defenseless and can't change their circumstances. Put down the camera and call the authorities.

Absolutely agree.

They did this on an episode of Intervention. A woman was shooting up right in front of her small children and leaving needles everywhere, yet the people filming didn't do anything until days or weeks later as far as removing the children. It was more important to get that film footage. So wrong.

Re: Animal hoarders - are the american animal protection laws too weak ?

It is wrong.

There is a line between helping them and exploiting them.

That cat lady that froze or refrigerated her dead animals needs a lengthy prison sentence, I don't care that she's mentally ill, or had good intentions.
The cat hoarders are the worst, as a cat lover it angers me so bad to see how they have been suffering. I guess the laws are too weak, no one should get away with animal neglect and abuse.
