The Middle : Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!

Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Frankie has always had a very strange obsession with Axl. I don't get it but I've seen other moms who are just like her where their sons are concerned.
This is the first time I've ever seen Axl almost hurt by what she did. He definitely seems to have some deep feelings for April.

Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Almost hurt? No. Axl was definitely hurt by her comments. I never have seen him look that way.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Well she was "dating her son" at one point.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Droid please.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
While that is true April defended Frankie, the April character is just too cartoonish, even for a comedy like this. Having a character that dumb is scraping the bottom of the barrel for The Middle. It's too bad they are wasting Greer's talent on such a stupid character.
I don't blame Frankie for getting mad that Axl didn't think of at least some time for them for the holiday on his own. That's on par for Axl's character and it's only natural for a mother to get upset about that.
FWIW, I'm a big fan of The Middle but this episode was a big miss. Something tells me this season is all about bringing April in to the family and eventually have an Axl-April wedding at some point. I wouldn't mind that at all if they hadn't made the April character so dumb but that is what contributed to help making this episode so weird and hard to watch.

Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
You are so right about the April character. She is cartoonish. She is not just dumb. She is something wrong with her dumb.
I will disagree about the ep though. Thought it was good. It felt real. This season has clearly been the most dramatic out of any season so far.

Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Frankie did act terribly and eating the Donahue's food was horrible of them, but I liked this episode a lot. I think Frankie's rant about April was really mean spirited because April's as dumb as a box of rocks, but she's a sweet girl, but Axl's reaction was heartbreaking. Charlie McDermott plays that role so well as a goofball and this side of him was just as good. Will & Grace had an episode where they had a big fight over having a baby together and this interaction reminded me of that. It was so real and when April and Axl didn't show up for Thanksgiving it was such an appropriate way to end it. I can't wait to see the next episode!
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Oh I love that episode of Will and Grace. That looked so real it was scary good. In all the years we had never seen Will get that angry at Grace or her challenge him like that.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Did you think that it was a good idea to post what happened in the episode even with a spoiler warning? Some of us, and I can only speak for myself, but I didn't watch the Middle when it aired on tv earlier this evening, I like to catch it on the dvr where I can speed through the commercials. You can't assume that everybody in a given night, even tonight as watched the episode before coming here and reading posts.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
My apologies. Just about every post on this episode is a spoiler that's not hidden so if that makes you angry, you have a lot of posting to do to reprimand people.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Pretty sure the poster wasn't talking to you. If they were, they responded to the wrong person. The comment is under the OP's original post. So I am going to guess they are talking to them. The OP and anyone on here doesn't need to apologize anyway. If a person hasn't seen the ep yet, don't go the message board. Simple as can be if you ask me.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Speedy's got it right. If you haven't seen the episode, don't come on the message board right after a new episode has aired! It's that simple. What were you expecting?
Please dont make the super suit green or animated.

Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
What really makes me laugh is that the spoilerphobe went into a thread called "Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode" and then complained about spoilers!

Why would you be reading IMDB posts specifically addressing that "Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode" if you didn't even see it yet? There's no reason to put "spoilers" in ANYTHING on this thread, because it dealt DIRECTLY with what happened in the episode. You'd have to be a complete fool to read it before watching it.
April
She has to go away!
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Frankie has always had a very strange obsession with Axl. I don't get it but I've seen other moms who are just like her where their sons are concerned.
True, remember that episode where they were "dating"?
I do think that April is sticking around, so for those that don't like her they should probably get used to her. She's supposed to be the "love of his life" after all. I thought they were conceding that it wasn't working though, when everyone in the family all decided they didn't like her.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
I just felt bad for Axl. Frankie needs to make amends with her son & accept April if she wants her son back in her life!
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
While it's true that Frankie needs to make amends, it's also true that Axl can't exist without his family. He has nothing else, really. So, essentially, Frankie's already won.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
It isn't a competition. There is nothing to win. That is part of Frankie's problemshe is incredibly insecure about her family compared to others, despite the fact that she doesn't put in the work of a Nancy Donahue.
Why are the Donahue's close? Because Ron and Nancy put in work to keep that family together. Frankie has always wanted Donahue-level love, without anywhere near that amount of work. It doesn't work that wayand I doubt the Donahue's see their acts as competitive. They're just trying to be a good family.

Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
April is sweet, but I can't take much more of her. I'm really hoping that someone on the board hit the nail on the head when saying perhaps April is not the "love of his life" that they referred to in last season's finale. It's possible that he met two girls who are friends that day at the pool. And he picked April because she's beautiful. So when this April thing runs its course, he'll end up with the other girl.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Agreed..awful! Frankie acting so desperate. Like she's auditioning to be the mother-in-law from hell. April, however seems to be "dumb like a fox"
Is April similar to Frankie in any way?
Is April similar to Frankie in any way?
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Sorry, but April is too stupid to function and Frankie is right. For once, Axl deserves better. The girl may be nice, but she is ridiculously idiotic, and if it were me, I'd have spoken my mind earlier.
A rose is just a rose.
A rose is just a rose.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
April is very annoying but I did not like that they allowed Axl to hear what Frankie said-kind of ruined the whole episode.
As for them eating the Donahues food-I found the last scene with the Donahues hilarious

Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
There may yet be a reason for it all. Notice that in all this drama, nobody, and I mean NOBODY, has ever thought to ask Axl what he sees in this girl.
Don't you find that strange? I find it utterly fascinating. There are all these opinions from all directions about her, yet not one single person has taken the time to really ask Axl what makes this girl different from Devin, Cassidy, or any number of his former girlfriends.

Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
It's rather obvious that Axl, when he's away from April, is especially obnoxious to his family this season. So, it's doubtful that anyone would dare say anything to him about her. But come on, her stupidity is really reaching ridiculous heights. When she said,
"I opened the trunk but found a big motor in there," I laughed, but what person her age would ever say such a thing? When you think about it, Axl's only attracted to this girl because she isn't a challenge. Cassidy was way above him intellectually, and Devin matched him every step of the way in snarkbut even she was slumming as his girlfriend. With April, he can be in charge because she has the mind of a bowl of jello. Nobody can be THAT stupid. There has to be more to this.

Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!

That right there is my point: there is no earthly way we can know this, because nobody has yet asked Axl what he sees in this girl. That is just speculation.
Until we get Axl's view, all we have as viewers is guesswork.
As for her being unrealistically dumb, I am waiting to see how the writers explain it all. When April defended Frankie, then told Axl to be nicer, she showed intelligence.
Plus, Darrin was as dumb as a rick of wood, so I got used to the over-the-top stupidity long ago.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
About April's stupidity
I hope so!
At this point, I'd be happy if the writers went old school sit-com and/or cartoon and had the Christmas star fall off the tree, hit her in the head and reverse her condition that was caused by whatever hit her in the head the first time! I think it was Brick who made the comment maybe the babysitter dropped her at some point?
All the characters have a, well, characteristic that defines them and it is exaggerated for laughs. But this thing with April's stupidity needs to stop. It's already been done on this show. It was better the first time.

It would be funny if she then immediately dumped Axl once she smartened up, lol.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Axl was so hurt to hear Frankie's comments because he does need his family. But she just put herself between him and the girl he (apparently) loves.
I don't hate the April character like a lot of people here seem to, but you have to wonder if she's really the right one for him if he treats the family worse because of her. If she's really right for him, she should be making him a better person, wouldn't you think?
It's also strange that not just Frankie, but the entire family dislikes her (plus Brick's girlfriend). I'm not sure they would do that if she was going to stick around. Unless they're going somewhere specific with this. We'll have to wait and see.

An EXCELLENT point! She should be making him a better person, and that just isn't happening. So the real problem in all of this isn't April, it's Axl. He isn't mature enough to handle any relationship because he isn't mature enough to handle life. Every time something comes down the pike that he doesn't understand or "get" (which is usually a lot), he either tries to dismiss it as "lame" or is totally lost. Case in point, his first semester at college. Despite a full boat scholarship and the fulfillment of his high school dream to play college ball, he pretty much destroyed it all. Flunks out of his classes, doesn't play football, ends up back at home for most of the year, etc. He gets kicked out of his apartment, has to live in a van, never plays football, has an internship that never went anywherehis entire life has been one of failure because he doesn't have the smarts nor the emotional stability to handle it. And apparently, he's never grown or learned from any of his experiences.
This is his senior year of college, and we're almost done the first semester. No mention of college at all; it's as if he isn't even attending. No mention of football, though this is the season for it and his LAST chance to play. Does he have plans? Will he even graduate? Considering that college is supposedly a big part of his life, you'd think these issues would be addressed. Yet, they're not.
I've a feeling April will eventually dump him, and her excuse will be, "sorry, Axl, but you're just too dumb for me."

Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Didn't Axl quit football last season though oh never mind I'm just now remembering he ended up not quitting.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Personally, I see a selective amnesia in play with the Heck family. April isn't the first significant other the Hecks disliked.
The only reason Frankie and Mike don't pull the same thing on Cindy as they do April is, they don't think Brick has options. They're not enamored of Cindy. They can barely talk to her.
Nobody was down with the idea of Darrin as Sue's boyfriend (except for Frankie, who thought he was harmless). Mike was against it; Axl was against it. However, they learned to deal because he was who Sue wanted to be with then (this is an important part to remember).
What Mike and Frankie haven't yet grasped is, whom Axl chooses to be with is not their call to make.
Axl is going to be with whoever makes him happyand if April makes him happy, he's not going to break up with her just because Frankie & Mike can't deal. They'll lose their son, first. Mike made the same mistake as Frankie last episode: he went at is as a dad trying to force his little boy to do things his way.
At some point, all parents have to realise that their kids are growing into women and men. Moreover, they have to accept that when their kids become adults, they are going to make their own choices.
Mike had to accept that going to Dollywood last year was Sue's decision. He had no sayand Sue didn't ask him, she just told him.
If Mike & Frankie want their son in their lives, they don't have to learn to love April; but they damn well better learn to accept that whom Axl chooses to be with is HIS choiceand they have no say. It's how nature works, and it is the hardest lesson for parents to learn.

Ah, and that's where you're making a mistake. Axl is NOT an adult. Nothing he's done in his entire life since high school graduation has illustrated that. He's made bad choices left and right, never accepts responsibility for them, slams those who are supporting him financially and emotionally, and has failed at EVERYTHING.
And you're saying Axl is a "grown up man?" Far from it. He's taking up for his girlfriend. Big whoop. If Frankie REALLY applied the pressure, he'd come back crying. Do you think April would take him in? Maybe you think Aunt Tee-tee will pay for Axl's insurance and everything else Frankie and Mike have been doing for Axl.
He's a narcissist, and the only reason why he's ticked off is because his choice is being criticized and not embraced. That's the only reason. It's not because he's thinking of poor, defenseless April. Far from it.
Axl will never have a serious relationship while the show is on the air. The same for the other two kids. Brick's so-called girlfriend might as well be living in Canada. Sue may get another boyfriend, but it won't last.
If Axl becomes too serious about April, she'll drop him like a hot potato. Though he professes love for her and disses his family for not supporting him, we have YET to hear her say she loves him. Very telling.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
What has he done lately?
As I said in another thread, nobody has asked Axl anything with regards to April.
Frankie was upset that her Thanksgiving dinner plans were going to be affected; she never ASKED Axl if going with April was her call, or his.
Mike went to East Indy to ask Axl to make up with Frankie. Then when Axl stood his ground, he shifted into dad mode and tried to force himand it didn't work.
Just look at the insurance papers. Frankie was sure Axl wouldn't know how, nor have the enthusiasm to fill out his own insurance papers. Then lo and behold, Axl did itand he only called his dad to check up on an allergy, which leads me to believe he had the rest handled.
What happens if Axl doesn't need Frankie to do his laundry, or cook his meals, anymore?
What he did in the past is an afterthought; now it's about what he can do at this moment.
The biggest mistake Frankie and Mike are making is not TALKING to Axl about his reasons for dating April. They just assume it's because she's pretty. They haven't so much as asked him what makes this girl different from his other girlfriends. She's not the first attractive girl he's ever dated.

And he won't do a thing but cave. Some catalyst will come along to change things between Axl and April. Maybe he'll ask her to marry him, and she'll turn him down. Then we'll see how "mature" he is.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
What if they don't break up?
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
What if they don't break up?
Oh, they will. And I'm predicting right now, it'll be soon. Maybe within the next two episodes. Then April will be his-tor-ree.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
I understand that is a possibility. However, we're living in an age where Donald Trump is the President-electso I just have to ask, "what if Axl and April don't break up?"
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!

Totally agree.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
In some ways, she has made him a better person. He will always be snarky. However, he's filling out his own insurance papers. We don't know anything else because neither Frankie or Mike have asked Axl anythingthey're still in "do what I say" mode.
The biggest thing I see, however, is that Axl stood up and defended April as a man to his father. He didn't cower and go back on a principle simply because daddy said sohe knows why he is angry at Frankie, and knows that he will forgive her when she apologises for going off on his girlfriend.
It wasn't Axl that was out of linethat is the point of all this strife. Axl was not in the wrong. His family don't have to love his girlfriendbut if they want their son in their lives, they better learn to accept her. It's not their call to make who Axl dates.

My God, the guy's 22 years old and a senior in college, and you're complimenting him for "filling out his own insurance papers?" Wow.
Oh, wait, I forgot. That's part of his new maturity. Showing people that he can fill out a form.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Lol, wait and watch. Maybe we'll see this isn't the only thing he has learned to do on his own. Frankie made a comment that he'll come home when he needs clean underwear and food. We'll find out if that's true, or if perhaps Axl has learned to do those things on his own, as well.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
I wonder if it's a contract dispute with the actor, Charlie McDermott (I don't think that's his name, but close enough), because if anyone who has watched the latest episode noticed, he was only in one scene. I don't know if this fact, I'm just assuming, so don't take me at my word.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
I can't believe people have given this episode a rating of 8.2. Waaaay to high. I gave it a 1 star.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Frankie's dislike of April stems from the fact that, she takes up all of Axl's time, and he doesn't come around as much as she liked.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
No it's because April is so dumb it's annoying.
"I will not be strong armed by threats against my laundry"
"I will not be strong armed by threats against my laundry"
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
Frankie's reaction is like a jealous mother's, another woman comes along, and she realizes that she's not the most important woman in her son's life. That's the same with fathers and daughters, as well.
Re: Frankie was horrible in the Thanksgiving episode!
No it's because April is so dumb it's impossible to have a conversation with her. It's because she needs to be helped to the bathroom because she doesn't understand "the first door on the left". It's because it's a miracle she doesn't wander into traffic.
there is dumb and then there is annoying dumb. Darren was in the first category. Sure he could sometimes be annoying but he was still someone that the audience would believe could hold down a job, be good at his job, support himself in his daily life. With April, I wonder. How does she not injure herself every day? Get lost everyday? How on earth is she holding down a job?
