Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
No, I did not.
Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
I thought he was going to reveal himself to have died in that shoot out, and all zombie-like, try to eat her. But then again, I was texting all through the movie and mucking around with my friends. When it came to that scene, I didn't really know what the heck was going on. Which one was the alien? I dunno. Daniel Craig must have died early because I don't remember seeing him at all. WTF? This movie sucked.

Mattie screams because she doesn't want her horse shot.
The horse collapsed and Cogburn had to put it out of its misery.

totally agree!
Check out this thread; it's old, but VaticanAssassin's satire on stupid ppl with stupid threads on True Grit is too funny.

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
Oh man i hear ya!! I am blown away by some of the comments I read here. But on the upside it gives me some entertainment.
Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
No, I didn't. But for a second there I thought Rooster was going to rape Little Blackie at gunpoint.
Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
lol

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
I didn't actually think that he was going to, but it was completely on my mind when that was going on.
(don't read that the wrong way, it's not me fantasising about raping anyone, it's just that I've watched several films involving rape recently)

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
Actually, the thought did pass my brain. But then I realized it would make no sense whatsoever :D
Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
Never at any time, and what kind of sick mind would envision it then, when he was trying to save her life?
Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
nope; that's insane

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
No. You complete goose.
Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
What an idiot. Are all men rapists simply because they're male ?
I'm completely out of ammo. That's never happened to me before.

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
Never crossed my mind: why would he rape her after all he had done trying to save her??? since she was dying, he would just rape her and get by?? it makes no sense, she said no because she knew he was going to kill lil blackie. the saddest part of the film for me.
anyways, if someone might have raped Mattie it could have been LaBeouf, he even said he was considering to kiss her while she was asleep, but she was "too ugly" for him anyways.

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
All men are rapists, or would be if they thought they could get away with it. I learned that at college, so it must be true.
Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
Well now that we all know what you're usually thinking about..
Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
Never thought that for a second. How could you miss the fact that he was running the horse into the ground and the girl knew that he was going to shoot it? Maybe you've been watching too many movies where sexual perverts are the norm.

Not at all.
Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
Never crossed my mind. Didn't think LeBoeuf was going to do it either.

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
What the hell? Do people have no sense of context, either with a character's personality or a story? How could a rape even be a possibility with all that had gone before? Rooster was a hard ol' b*stard, but he was an honourable guy. And if anything, his concern for Maddie peeked out through all the way along, knowing that the places they were going and the job they were going to do were not for 'a child.' On top of that, he mas making a mad dash across the plains to save her life. An ancient script says, 'To the pure, all things are pure'
Sorry: that was the long answer. The short answer is, 'No. Are you on crack??'

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
Agreed there is no way to interpret that scene as having anything to do with rape.
BUT in hindsight the heaving horse, Mattie being held down and then the horse being killed does have an unusually large amount of sexual symbolism.
A galloping horse
Heaving sweating horse
Gun being fired
Mattie's cries of no
Rooster carrying the girl in his arms
It's night
And that's just in that one scene.

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
Since the whole story is her memory - inclusive of possible repressions - it's not totally unlikely he actually raped her. Where else would she get her horror for men from?
Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
The missing arm means that a snakebite was likely the cause but the loss of her arm could also have been from torture and infection. Another poster said it was a loss of innocence.
The horse ride can be read as a fabrication as a way to cope with her rape ordeal, 25 years after the fact. The saviour of hers is Rooster, who is the person who saved her from the bandits. Notice that Rooster also saves her from Labeuf when she's being 'spanked' right after a river crossing where she becomes inexplicably dry. Attempted rape?
I don't think the film is 'really' about that, it's not a puzzle to be solved, but just the subtext being there I think just make the film more powerful, as the Coens don't just ignore it. (as the original film did no doubt with it's casting of girl who looked like a boy)

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
Aren't you reading way too much into this? I mean do you have any evidence that such a subtext was intended by the Coens?
Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
It's unusual that they would bury the subtext as deep as this even for the Coens. And no I have no evidence, if by that you mean the Coens saying "there's a sexual subtext".
Also the central thesis of the film, at least it's most obvious. Is that justice/revenge is deadly to the heart and body. Communicated by her being bitten by a snake after shooting Cheney, also losing an arm. But wouldn't that meaning be better communicated if Mattie in her quest for vengeance/justice was raped by the criminals and the men she sent to bring them to justice, rooster and Lebuef?
But because this is a romanticized western, that stuff doesn't happen to young women.
A snake is also a pretty phallic shaped animal, that curiously came from 'inside' a man. Just saying.

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
I think Mattie losing her arm made it clear enough. Rape never entered my mind during viewing but the "revenge has a cost" message was still clear to me. Thus IMO they didn't need to include a rape scene to better communicate it.
IIRC there were numerous snakes only one of which came from inside the skeleton. As for it being phallic shaped, I really doubt that's why they chose it. I think it has more to do with the fact that snakes were part of the dangerous fauna of the Choctaw Nation. Maybe they were just following the novel (I haven't read it though, so can't say).
This is just my opinion of course. Maybe I'm being too simple and I have to admit I'm pretty fond of Occam's razor. There was no rape scene and nobody involved with the movie has said anything about any supposed sexual subtext.

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
It would made more sense if that subtext was intended by the original writer, the Coens wouldn't waste time in overthinking a pretty straightforward story.
Still, I hope that dude is just joking, jeeez.

brilliant post! never thought about it like that. (and his name is cock burn)
But I clicked on this topic because I also thought for a few seconds that he was going to rape her. It wouldn't have been such a bad thing for the story, because I thought it was pretty boring. no chemistry or emotions between the characters, predictable story. he raping her all of a sudden would be total surprise and very evil. being her friend first and she trusts him. (btw I hate rape in real life and I would not wish it to anybody)

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
Sorry if missed something, but how do you know she had a "horror for men"? Throughout the movie, including the final scenes of her as a woman, she dealt frankly with any men she came across. I don't recall any horror whatsoever.
If you're referring to the fact that she never got married, I think there are other far more plausible reasons such as her Presbyterian nature.

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
After he throws her off lil blackie, looks like he's on top of her and she's screaming "NO, NO, PLEASE NO" I seriously thought he was about to rape her.
You do realize she screamed that because he had his pistol drawn on the horse, and was about to kill it? (Which he did). And he didn't throw her off, lil blackie fell over from exhaustion.

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
You kids are so fuking repressed. If you honestly didn't think for a moment that he was about to rape her.
Basically, the rape is implied but doesn't happen. It's to depict how close Rooster got to her emotionally, that she never let any other man get that close to her again. That scene was supposed to make you think of what effect he was having on Mattie. How it shaped her for the rest of her life.

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
No. not all. I never would have ever gotten that from that scene unless i had stepped in this forum.
Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
No. but I thought it was kinda hot when Damon was spanking her.

Re: Did anyone else think Rooster was going to rape her?
He was prepared to run a horse and himself in to the ground to save the girls life, and the first thing you think of is "is he trying to rape her?" That's a very crude mind you have there

Not kidding either, weird I thought that as it wouldn't make much sense but did anyone else think this?
