This Is Us : Compared to Parenthood

Compared to Parenthood

This show is trying to be NBC's new Parenthood. I was wondering what you noticed the differences between this show and Parenthood. I personally liked parenthood better. I'm not saying either one is better. Everyone has there personal preferences. This is Us seems to have more emotional fluff. It's also slower paced. Parenthood seemed to have more character interaction. I know that we're still early on in the show, but I wonder what you think.

Re: Compared to Parenthood

I am not really sure why people are comparing them other than the fact that they are the only two recent shows on network television that are actually about people, relationships, and family. Most other network television shows these days are crime dramas, or something of that nature.

This Is Us is a good show so far, but it doesn't even touch the greatness that was Parenthood. For starters, the acting in TIU needs help. A lot of the actors just aren't very good. In Parenthood, pretty much everyone on that show was a BRILLIANT actor. Everything on TIU feels forced.

Also, I think the whole surprise factor at the end of the TIU episodes is interesting, but it's almost as if the writers focus too much on that and the natural rut hum of the show gets lost. Again, it feels forced.

Don't get me wrong, I am happy there is another show on tv about people, but to even consider it as good as Parenthood would be completely out of the question for me.

Re: Compared to Parenthood

If Parenthood was that good, why was it cancelled? Just saying.

Yeah, that's why you should ask them before you knock them out, John.

Re: Compared to Parenthood

It had six seasons. That's pretty standard for a show of this nature. The best shows know when to end instead of going on and on and getting stagnant.

Re: Compared to Parenthood

They had a large cast and I'm guessing it was rather expensive to film.

Re: Compared to Parenthood

I never thought Parenthood was all that great. The way they had everyone talking over each other drove me crazy. They were an entire family of great talkers but horrible listeners.

Re: Compared to Parenthood

I felt similarities to Parenthood. I don't think it's 'trying to be' anything though. So far, it's great. With only 2 episodes, I think it's too early to judge it as 'emotional fluff.' Either give it a chance or choose to tune out.

Re: Compared to Parenthood

I liked Parenthood in its first season, but after that it got so annoying. I literally quit. It tried so hard, and all the characters were so bloody irritating. This show feels so much more sincere and normal to me, two episodes in and I already love it way more than the entire first season of Parenthood.

There will be bloodbut you will be loved.

Re: Compared to Parenthood

Personally, besides being about family, I wouldn't compare the two. Otherwise we should just compare every family drama to each other. It's like when people will compare the new medical dramas to ER(although Chicago Hope was on at the same time-but no one compares them to that). There are differences. One major one being the characters themselves. You either like them, thus the show-for the most part. Some people didn't like the characters on Parenthood, but like these(or vice versa). This is slower because of the timeline.

Re: Compared to Parenthood

I loved Parenthood, but there were so many characters that it got kind of exhausting. I thought it lost its way during the middle few seasons and it was just bogged down with too many plot lines and too many characters to try to feature. It definitely came back around during the last season, though, and the finale was FANTASTIC.

With This Is Us, I think it benefits from having fewer characters because we can really delve further into each of their stories. And I think the time travel aspect is refreshing and an additional way to delve into the triplets lives, because we can get to know them in the present and in the past.

People are comparing the two shows because they are both in similar time slots and are both dramas revolving around family. I think the two shows have similar emotional-type story lines, but beyond that, they really don't have much in common.
