Preacher : So if God is gone, we all become murderers????
Re: So if God is gone, we all become murderers????
Your reading of the daughter thing is debatable. The daughter was brain dead. Finding out there was no God allowed the mother to euthanize the daughter as an act of compassion. Devout Christians are generally against assisted suicide because of the whole "all life is sacred" thing.
Also, it wasn't the whole town. Emily told her children that nothing had really changed and that they never really needed God in the first place. However, if you are brought up in the fire and brimstone stories then perhaps some people may lose your mind for a while if they get proof there is no more God. Besides the show is partly comedic so you should expect some exaggeration for comic effect. Lighten up.

Well thanks for your opinion, and I'm sure the writers are sorry for not keeping you in mind hearing how you are sickened so easily and surprised by the fact that a television series based off a comic book doesn't line up with your hipster, bernies Sanders loving, whistle blower, internet bad ass mentality.

Really, as an atheist this is very upsetting to me. As soon as God is pronounced missing in action, the whole village suddenly transforms into a murderous, evil population. As if the only thing that keeps you from killing your sick daughter is the thought that you will be punished after death What??? How about being punished in this life, or for FSM sake, the actual love for your daughter? I found it sickening to see that someone (writers) could actually think such a thing. It was much worse than any of the gore, blood and killing I saw in this series.
I'm an atheist myself, and that's not what I took from the show. People in Annville each responded according to who they were. The daughter had been in a coma for years and never going to come out of it. If she did it would be as a vegetable. The mother would've seen killing her as a mercy (which it would be), whereas before she'd just viewed it as a sin and perhaps something God wants her to endure and suffer over.

Re: So if God is gone, we all become murderers????
Well, religion is used a great deal just to keep people in line. The whole idea of being against suicide is a way to keep people trapped in horrible lives where suicide could be seen as a desirable out. There is a good side and a bad side to religion based on how it is employed. As a person wiser than me once put it, religion is for people who are afraid of going to Hell, and spirituality is for those who have already been there. So in the depiction of the show, we are shown examples of those who have internalized their faith and those who depend on an outside force to maintain civility. The key to religion is to separate the message from the messenger when necessary.

It's not that there is no God, He went awol. They were not true Christians because they demanded to be shown rather than believed faithfully. I also feel the town blowing up was a metaphor for Sodom and Gamorrah. It was a town of sinners who made demands on God and we're punished.
Re: So if God is gone, we all become murderers????
I saw things in an entirely different light. I thought that the mother killed her brain-dead daughter in despair, and as a mercy-killing, as she'd learned that God, her only hope for the girl's recovery, was "gone." Same with the suicides of the mascots; they didn't want to live in a "Godless" world.
At the same time, I thought this was a stupid reason for their actions (and not just as I'm agnostic.) They'd seen proof of a Heaven, and of angels, and knew only that God was AWOL, not
"dead."
