Thanks for the great work!
No big surprises I guess..would like to see North Dallas Forty a bit higher. One of the best sports films.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
I found Time After Time ranking in the top 10 a big surprise. I don't think I ever see people talking about it (though now I've said that, I bet I'll start to notice it all the time).

That's also what I logged in to say! I'm certainly not saying TAT is my fave from 1976 but it was on my ballot and I'm pleasantly shocked to see it place that high in these results!
Thanks for running/collating this survey. I know they've been a standard feature here for years and I've participated in the past but I haven't checked in some timewhich years have already been covered in this latest round of surveys?
And now I will take the key out of the machine as I log out.
Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
Visual: This poll (1979) is only the second poll in the current round of surveys. 1936 was the first one (see http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000010/nest/263564605 for the results of that year).
I put together a list of years polled in the prior round based on the information I had; see http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000010/nest/262480043?p=2&d=262533537#262533537. However, there were some years for which I knew only that the year had been polled, but not when.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
Regret missing 1936 but glad I only missed one year of this current round! I think I'm going to post my ballot in the 1936 thread just for the fun of it.
It's funny - I've seen well over a thousand movies from the 1930's but my votes in the 2016 survey will only be for a handful of SFX spectacles because those are the only ones I actually pay to go see (I often see an IMAX film twice or even four times), whereas my time watching films at home is spent on the classics. I guess I could watch some current films using library DVD's, but I'm only up to 1939 and still would rather start in on the early 40's than watch most of what's being produced these days.
I don't suppose there's any advance word on what survey year will follow 2016?

It'll be 1940. See the end of the results post.
Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
I almost feel bad participating when I've barely seen a dozen films from a given year.
Not bad enough to keep me from voting though!
Wondering if anyone at all had The Black Hole anywhere on their ballot (I didn't). I haven't seen it since '79 and I'm wondering if it has any admirers. I barely remember anything about it but was hoping it's at least halfway watchable. Waiting for the perfect conditions before I sit down in front of it.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
Hi VF. Somewhere, sometime in my past I have seen The Black Hole. My imdb vote history has a 2/10 vote I don't remember a single thig about the film! So no, it was nowhere near being on my ballot.
Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
The Black Hole got 17 points from 3 ballots.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
Thanks guys. The Music Box in Chicago was actually slated to screen The Black Hole between 5-10 years ago but they suddenly cancelled it without giving any reason.
It's ironic that I started a thread about 1940 a few days ago before I knew it would be the February survey. Unfortunately for me I still have at least twenty from 1939 to get to before I can even start on 1940. Six weeks isn't much time, plus I like to watch in release order or as close as I can get to it.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
No I haven't.
I don't really know much about American football but I've watched about 10 games on television over 30 odd years - I've figured out a touchdown and a field goal so far.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
Thank you the results and breakdown; this was my favourite part of the CFB poll. I like the top 10 and have a sneaking suspicion I may have seen Time after Time, but I don't recall it. Happy that Stalker and Wise Blood increased in votes and The Warriors held position.
Happy New Year to you and other readers in a sad week of celebrity deaths.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
Nice work, flaiky. I like the little arrows! I'm intrigued by the big drops for Buffet Froid, My Brilliant Career, The Great Santini etc and the stronger showing for Time After Time.
The biggest over all surprise for me was the lack of support for Yanks, although I could see it wasn't going to make the list even at the voting stage. I don't think it even scraped 20 points.

Yanks almost made the cut - 24.5 points from 3 ballots. I'm a Schlesinger fan and it sounds interesting; I'll see it some day.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
Busy time of year is right! I'm amazed you could get it done this soon. Well done, ye!
I think I expected higher placing for The Wanderers and especially The Black Stallion, but as I watched the ballots come in it started to be clear that wasn't going to happen. Disappointing, but they'll have their day again I'm sure.
It's surprising to find a cartoon short in the top 20, and an obscure one at that. How the heck did that happen? The other nineteen are all among the titles I'd expect to find in or near the winners' circle.
Coppola's ambitious blathering mess gets to take another victory lap. Size does matter.
Put it on a tripod!

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
Haha let's just say I've spent the entire day binge rewatching my favourite TV show as I got this finished up.
Tale of Tales isn't too obscure - it's ranked 267 on Sight & Sound and 461 on TSPDT. And I suppose because it's only half an hour long, people are more likely to check it out. It was in the top 15 of the FG poll as well, so I wasn't surprised to see it do well.

You mean the previous CFB Poll for 1979?
Thanks.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
Thanks for the hard work flaiky! Pleased that Stalker went up a notch, that Time After Time and Tale of Tales did so well, and that Quintet actually got 4 votes . On the downside Real Life dropped a bit; Albert Brooks is being slowly forgotten. What can ya do?
Be true, Unbeliever.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
I love Altman but haven't seen Quintet - it's always talked about as one of his worst. It's interesting that gianduja and you had such positive things to say about it, I'm kind of intrigued now to see what I think.

Nice work flaikster. I was hoping Zombie Flesh Eaters was going to sneak in there and lower the tone somewhat but alas we cannot have everything.

Nice work, flaiky. Thanks for doing it so efficiently.
Not too many of my top twenty feature but it's nice to see 'Nosferatu the Vampyre', 'Vengeance Is Mine', and 'Tale of Tales' feature prominently. 1979 was a revelation for me in terms of the depth and brilliance of the animations to be found. It's fitting at least that there is one such example in the top twenty. And, yes, I certainly am pleased too that the charming 'Time After Time' performed so splendidly.
Disappointing to observe the drop in fortunes for Gill Armstrong's enchanting and wonderful 'My Brilliant Career'. Now, there's a film that should be placing in the top ten or twenty of polls like these! Also, despite some interesting moments of artistry and visual flourish, I have to admit to being rather underwhelmed by 'Buffet froid'. I only gave Blier's surreal film a 7/10 so the drop in fortunes for that one doesn't meet with my surprise or dissatisfaction.
Anybody else vote for the extraordinary 'Kataku'? Watching Kawamoto's dazzling artistry unfold certainly offered one of the most exquisite and unforgettable film experiences I have had in 2016.
That's all, folks!

Kataku was on one other ballot.
My Brilliant Career was one I intended to watch for the poll, I love some Judy Davis, but I barely watched anything in the end. Haven't been in a film mood.

Jack Lemmon's performance in The China Syndrome is one for the ages. I enjoyed Time After Time a lot, and ranked it highly, but it doesn't come close to The China Syndrome.
I wonder if some who voted just haven't seen (or don't remember) this film.

Hi flaiky,
Many thanks for all your hard work. Interesting results. Very disappointed that Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy didn't get higher; a cracking miniseries and a great adaptation of the novel. Hardcore deserves to be higher up the list too.
Did anyone else vote for The Butterfly Murders or Riddle of the Sands?
Go to bed Frank or this is going to get ugly .

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
The Riddle of the Sands was just you and me! I can't say I'm that surprised as, while it's popular with British TV schedulers, I think it's pretty much unknown everywhere else. It probably has limited appeal anyway. The other British thrillers/action/spy films mostly did badly as well, with only a few making the final list. Most people don't vote for TV series so I think Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy did respectably in the circumstances. I was more surprised that The Odd Angry Shot scraped in. But one vote can make quite a big difference at the lower end of the poll.
Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
I also had Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy at number 1 but with reservations as I try to avoid tv series. But it was too good to omit.

Thanks for the results.
I'm surprised not many people liked Suru.
Also, since it is 'new' to the results tally, I can only imagine Escape From Alcatraz has had a year change in the years since the last poll.
I was wondering if you or someone else saved the results for the CFB Science Fiction Poll 'cause I wanted to look back at the results recently and unfortunately all of the post history both from the poll and results thread have been deleted.
I'm a police man sir, I don't have any feelings

The previous results were only available for the top 25, so Escape from Alcatraz is new to the top 25 but not necessarily new to the 1979 poll.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
There's difference between disliking a film and not having seen (or not remembering) one.
I'm surprised not many people liked Suru.
I, for example, haven't seen Suru. Maybe if I had seen it, I would have loved it and voted for it. (See my previously posted comment re The China Syndrome.)
Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
Yeah, this is true. I was just thinking, looking at the obscurity of some of the movies people posted, it would also have been something they would have watched. But yeah, even if they did like it, they still could have liked 20 others a bit more.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
Stalker, Apocalypse Now and Alien, great movies deserving of their placement. I'm not too big on Manhattan though, but it's a sweet movie.
Are you sure you want to do 2016 next ? Why not 2015 or 2014 ? I mean, obviously most people won't have seen all the 2016 movies they want to have seen by then. Many of them will not even be released in many countries until January or February. And once a movie leaves theaters you have to wait a few months to get it on home video or to download it in good quality.
So I think it's a waste to do the 2016 poll so soon. We should ask others what they prefer.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
Because, phenix, 2015 was done this time last year and 2014 the year before that. Polling the latest year been happening every January for as long as I've been posting here and I imagine long before then.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
Ah, I see. But what is the logic behind that then ? (see my post)
Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
That it's interesting and fun to see which films people enjoyed?
Zetes is the host and doesn't stick strictly to imdb years, so films like The Witch and Dheepan will be eligible even though they are technically 2015. People never seem to have trouble filling their ballots.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
I mean, what is the logic in asking people for a top for a year that they haven't had yet the time to properly explore ? And it just seems wrong to me to conduct a poll involving movies that aren't even available yet. How am I supposed to check out the movies that I missed in theaters in the past few months ?
It also gives a disadvantage to the movies that have come out late in the year, as less people will have the time to catch up on them compared to those that came out earlier. So it skews the results in that sense.
I must have seen around 40 so far so it's not really the issue. The issue is that people often have many more movies than that on their radar for each year so you can't expect them to be in position to give a top they feel confident with only weeks after the year has ended, especially when some of their most anticipated ones are not even available yet.

You're taking this way too seriously. Or doing your typical "phenix arguing for the sake of arguing" shtick. Pass.

Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
Maybe. Or maybe not. As I said, it would be a good idea to ask others about their opinion on the matter. People who vote in those polls have a collective right to state their preferences on the year that is done next.
Re: CFB Poll, 1979: RESULTS
People have never had a say over what poll comes next, and I've never seen it be an issue. If someone isn't interested in a particular year they just skip it. You're very welcome to do that (ie, piss off and stop being your usual troublemaker).
