Re: Why was the movie called Collateral Beauty
The beauty around oneself.

Re: Why was the movie called Collateral Beauty
Good question, but I don't think there's a good answer since the term collateral isn't synonymous with Beauty. Collateral is an asset that is only handed out via a loan with interest tied to it. I don't see how you can allude to beauty, love, or redemption with the word collateral unless the story dealt with Satan granting either one in exchange for one's soul as collateral.
Re: Why was the movie called Collateral Beauty
Dude, collateral is being used here as an adjective. "indirect" "servicing to support or reinforce", "ancillary", "parallel". Seeing the beauty surrounding tragedy or oneself. Using that dark moment to reinforce or support others. There is something to be learned from the tragedy to help a person cope with the loss. There is an ancillary beauty. They couldn't use those synonyms. So collateral seemed a lot less boring.

THIS^^^^ (what omoxus said).
As a mother who has lost a child, I know exactly what is meant by Collateral Beauty. It's been 2 years for me since my son died. The first year I was in shock. The first half of this last year came anger and bitterness, followed by depression. I am still deeply sad and I will carry it with me the rest of my lifethere is nothing worst than losing a child. Yet..losing him has made me able to love deeper, truly become epathetic and feel others pain, and see the beauty in things I took for granted before. It is transformingin both awful ways, and beautiful ways.

Re: Why was the movie called Collateral Beauty
Condolences for your loss..I have not even had a child YET, as intended, director David Frankel (did anyone else mistake him, when hearing the name mentioned in radio/theatre/TV ads, as the "Nerve" actor Dave Franco, brother of James?), made us ALL understandI also had to get my dog put to sleep and with animals not even able to speak, that's even more so, and such movies (by the same director) as Marley and me and 1957's Old Yeller by Robert Stevenson for Disney also tackle that one much more heartbreaking loss than a child what did you did of the twists and turns this took..especially at the end.good moove and glad you seem to be recovering. Take care of yourself, Jennifer. If the theatre patron IS in a very good mood, and not in a depressed state, they can enjoy the film, cry through it, "comfort" quietly to the Will Smith character, and at the last applaud and cheer as the forever-happy reunited coupleour hero and heroine walk under that bridge in New York's endless Central park..

Re: Why was the movie called Collateral Beauty
Omg. Are you actually saying the loss of a pet is worse than the loss of your child???
I just cannot. I've lost many pets. NOT. THE. SAME. Omg. Omg. I think you mean well, but what you said is such a slap in the face. I am not saying losing a pet isn't sad, but my God.
I don't know what else to say here. Speechless.

Yes, I think you get it.
Thats why she turned into a counselor, so she could help others. Cause she understands.
I lost a child too. 10 years ago now.

Re: Why was the movie called Collateral Beauty
Marius, so sorry about the loss of your child too. the worst pain in the universe. Big huge hugs from one bereaved parent to another. It's been 2 years for me, but honestly it could just as well be 2 days sometimes.
Re: Why was the movie called Collateral Beauty

Re: Why was the movie called Collateral Beauty
I too am sorry to hear about your loss. I very much liked this movie. But your experiences made me flash to a Thornton Wilder play called Our Town. In that drama, the dead lament how oblivious we living humans are to the wonders all around us. Kinda the same thing going on here. Peace.
Re: Why was the movie called Collateral Beauty
Because it sounds like something that would win an Oscar
Re: Why was the movie called Collateral Beauty
It is basically explained in the movie via Naomie Harris's character as she is telling the story of the woman she met at the train station after losing her child.
Re: Why was the movie called Collateral Beauty
my guess is what happened was the scriptwriter got the idea for this back in the 00s when there was lots of talk about "collateral damage" in the wars in iraq and afghanistan and thought, yeah, but what about collateral beauty? and then thought what a great idea that was even though it's a pretty stupid idea. but it stuck anyway and he convinced other people it was a good title even though it's really not.
Re: Why was the movie called Collateral Beauty
No matter if someone you love dies, some more people will forward their love immediately (like the analogy some of us make to 2000's "Pay it Forward").
