Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
I'm with you. I didn't really understand what happened. It felt very unresolved.
Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
Did you really want everything you expected? I feel like the ending gave us more. I loved it.
Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
I'm really confused as to how you thought the ending was stupid because it was incredible. Also, keep in mind that this is a series so all unquestions will most likely be met with answers in the next season.
Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
There's no way this will get a second season. It's complete as it is, questions unanswered.

Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
Very simple: any of those outsiders jumping up to do their silly modern dance and grunting routine would have immediatly gotten a bullet between the eyes. This was a musical scene, where people suddenly start singing in the midst of everything and nobody is surprised by it. Just that the show did not bother to establish that device and hinted at it being some metaphor and not really happening. So it was happening. It was painfully embarrassing to watch them dancing. There was nothing natural about it, it was forced kitsch for little girls to post as animated gifs on their tumblr.

Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
How can we say all shooters are going to act the same? They could be high, they're obviously out of touch, the 5 people aren't rushing them. I can see a shooter being transfixed for a bit.

Also, there's supposed to be something mystical and magical about the dancethat it has some unearthly power. So I imagined that was in play.

Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
While I am totally willing to buy into that, the show itself has established that the effect happens either during the performance or afterwards, but not at the beginning, and not before. Had the barricaded in a room and started their dance before the shooter got in there, it might have made sense. But the way as it is, there clearly was no reason to tackle the shooter, as he did not intend to shoot anyway, else he would have done it. And, yes, at that point all shooters are the same, as they want to shoot. If they did not want to shoot, they would not have brought along a gun.

Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
So you would also find fault with the fact that the shooter has walked calmly through the room without immediately going on a shooting rampage? (Aside from shooting the window from outside?)
I don't think the black and white "Couldn't Happen" approach is very realistic, because many odd things do happen in life.
I'm thinking of the way the Gardner Museum in Boston was robbed of priceless paintings (in the 1980's?) One could insist "No unarmed museum employees are going to just answer a knock on the door after hours and simply let in an unscheduled 'cleaning crew'"but they did just that.
Sothe killer is an individual, acting in an individual way. Maybe they were looking for a specific person or group, maybe they're on LSD. Who knows? Maybe they just find what's unfolding so bizarre and unexpected that they're a bit confused.
(I'd support the idea the shooter would probably shoot if the 5 were right next to them, and he felt they were going to spring, but aren't they more across the room?)

Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
I dislike the whole scene in the way that they picked a random situation for the sole purpose that everything can happen at that point. There is an aura of deus ex machina in it. This is not what a season worked carefully towards.
Had they given the shooter a character, they could have come up with something. But they way it went was just incredibly lazy. I mean, you are aware that from the top of your head you came up with a better solution than what was shown? "Who knows?" just isn't enough. It is their job to tell a compelling story, not ours to make their story compelling by coming up with better ideas in hindsight.
That they did not show the shooter did not help either, as there is no way of knowing his condition which might have told something about him.
Maybe they could have paid more attention to the idea of surrounding the shooter, keeping him from aquiring his target by letting the next performer play the main role (of course that would have needed a different set up than the dancing in sync storywise). But that is the sad thing: when thinking even just a little bit about it, most people here will come up with something more interesting and plausible than the actual writers. And that is a sad result for a show which started with such a potential.

Well, doesn't he use an assault rifle? It is a tool to solve exactly the problem of someone being alive in about that distance the user wants to have dead.

I completely agree with you that "who knows?" can only take you so far. I usually hate the whole 1960's Theater of the Absurd movement, and its writers like Samuel Becket and Harold Pinter who never really arrive at a clear conclusion. It DOES feel like a cop out when a story's like that, because ideally a plot is like a carefully crafted puzzle, with all the pieces finally fitting neatly together.
But somehow it didn't bother me here, maybe because the series is conceived to play out over several cycles; there is more for us to learn. And all along there has been an element of mystery around the unknown they're traveling into.
For me, the power in that scene is the 5 dancers' commitment to their last-ditch attempt. Yes, they look rather ridiculousbut when the chips are down people don't care how they look. I really liked that aspect of it.
All I can say ("Oh please, let it be so!" you're thinking) is the behavior of the shooter didn't bother me and I found the behavior of the 5 dancers very compelling, and if that makes me stupid, then SO BE IT, WORLD!
Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
I'm with you too. It has a stupid ending, in ep1. There was a short art shot toward the end, that didn't seem to fit anything. The sinking ship with a bunch of 7 year olds, almost seemed like the sinking car in Jason Bourne.
The beginning had 2 nude teenagers, which probably wasn't for 7 year olds lol, who knows.
I watched 5 eps of Traveling and quit due to it's attempt? This show I've seen 1 ep, and that is enough.

Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
Though I agree a bit , you should be happy that we're still not stuck on vampires and teenage wolf dogs.
Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
Yep. It is much slower than it is deep, but once a show comes up with interesting characters (which it did) people tend to forget that narrative is an important ingredient.
Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
If you liked The OA, I hope you've heard of or seen their other film "The Sound of My Voice". In many ways it's a cousin, thematically, visually, ect. to The OA. Almost too close in some ways. But an incredible film on its own and worth watching if you like this type of thing.
Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
Yes, I have seen the Sound of my Voice as well as Another Earth both of which are excellent films. It really saddens me how some people can't appreciate such films but I suppose it will always be the case.
Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
I agree its a beautiful show I mean 37 year old man from texas cried a little good, I don't usually comment on these thing because of all the idiots it feels unresolved because they want u to watch the next season so do that p.s. brit marling amazing talent=actress, writer, producer.
Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
109% agree
Amazing. The last scene was superb.

Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
During the cafeteria scene I couldn't stop thinking, "The glee club is going to get mowed down with bullets trying to have a dance off during an active shooter scenario."
Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
indeed.. I was already a huge fan of brit and zal, and this ones proofs that this unique bondage creates the most beautiful things I've ever seen on screen.
loved it from start to finish, the score the editing the scenery, the overall acting and brit at her best shining with a master of directing. wow! incredibly strong and powerful story.
sadly not everyone understands it.

Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
Beautiful, compelling, frightening, transcendent.
SPOILER:
The moment we saw the large windows in the cafeteria, I feared there'd be a mass shooting. We live in such frightening times. It doesn't take a scientist to hold a room full of people captive.

Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
Agreed. The small town backdrop with an extremely compelling mystery, makes for an amazing combination.
Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
This show was just awful, no one was interesting and nothing really happened in the end.
Only way to fix this show is if the shooter shot all 5 of them at least then it would have been funny. Ugh that dance was just awful, embarrassing to watch.

Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
I agree. Poetic and beautiful describes this series perfectly. And I loved the ending.
Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
You must be very young! Explore German Cinema, French Directors Franois Truffaut and Louis Malle and Akira Kurosawa's work.
Also be sure to see a younger Scott Wilson (Abel Johnson)in THE NINTH CONFIGURATION aka Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer Kane. I believe you will love it!

Re: This is the most beautiful show I've ever seen
The last dance scene made me laugh hysterically for a long time, but I still liked it somehow. It wasn't a condescending "you're so stupid" laugh, it was just amazement and disbelief at an extremely absurd situation. And I didn't think it ruined anything, for me it made it better, it was a viewing experience I was not expecting and I enjoyed it.
On the whole, pretty excellent show, some great stuff in there.
