Re: The End
Yeah, Jeff Bezos is really knuckling under to Trump:

The current political climate of deconstructionism and corporate butt-kissing is most certainly to blame.

On that note, Amazon employees have a problem with the company putting ads on Breitbart:

Re: The End
Which is Ironic given the open warfare between Bezos and Trump.

Naaah. Obama`s thugs are having it shut down to punish everybody because some of us voted for Trump.

LOL, I knew I'd get you to see the light eventually, Henry. I'm gonna miss you too. Ah geez, do I feel a group hug coming on? I'm breaking out the marshmallows for toasting and readying up my sheet music for Kumbayaa, just as soon as I get this damn lump out of my throat.

Re: The End
Anyone else find it interesting that, given the amount of anti-Trump messaging here, the boards are being pulled down just now?
Just sayin'.
Yes, I do find it interesting, and not as a Jungian synchronicity.
I also find "interesting" phenomena like 'IMDb v2.0', an opportunist who registered a couple of days ago, after the official announcement, created a "free clone" of the CFB (and other boards, including Sports, Politics, Religion and Harry Potter) and goes around trying to sell his/her product, when what he or she really wants is to collect data (e-mail and IP addresses, personal preferences and hobbies, etc) which can be sold on the Internet.
I may even consider upgrading it to a paid version someday, but for now, it's just a refuge for those looking for a new place to post with the friends you've made here.
Surprisingly, some good, mature and serious posters have registered already and even invited me to join.
Re: The End
This is utterly and absolutely fking disappointing.
Re: The End
As long as we can still rate and review movies on the IMDB I don't mind. With all the quasi-illiterate right wing Trump Trolls running riot on these forums - alongwith the CFB's horrible old resident granny troll snsurone, since Donald Trump's election it is hardly surprising. It's pretty obvious the Donald Trump supporters are to blame. Andd of cour serial reporters of the CFB (aka The prim, The Prissy & The Prurient.
Cheers folks, it was fun for a while.
PS, Oh no, I won't be able to win Rob T's Oscar predictions competition this year.

Hi Jefferson Where is the petition? Do you have a link to it? I'd like to sign toofor what it's worth. Thanks!

Re: The End
Hi Hobnob - I think you have found it, but just in case here is the link.

This will probably be the last time we talk on these boards Hobnob, so I'm going to take this opportunity to say goodbye and good luck to you. You have always seemed like a good guy, your posts have always been beautifully written and you certainly have a vast knowledge of classic era American films and stars.
When it comes to American films from the 1970s to the present day I am pretty sure there are few people in the world who have seen as many of them as I have - so I'll happily test my knowledge with the best of them.
Thanks to Betamax and VHS video, DVD, Blu Ray TCM, my classic obsessed elderly friend Mervyn, my late movie-mad and extremely kind and generous friend Winton, the Labia Cinema in Cape Town, The Roxy Tearoom Bioscope in Cape Town, The Astra, The Metro, The Embassy, The Grand, The 20th Century, Kine Park, The Savoy - all in Port Elizabeth (and now long gone), the Cinerama in Johannesburg and SABCTV3 back in the late seventies (when TV first came to South Africa and they still showed classics from the classic era on Free TV - the first three late night Saturday movies on SABC3 were CITIZEN KANE, THE THIRD MAN and THE FALLEN IDOL and the torrent sites, I have seen a heckload of films from the classic era too - and just about everything starring Kirk and Burt.
Also, my absolute passion for the American western, has led to me seeing more westerns most mortals in the modern world.
But I ain't in the league of guys like you and clore2 when it comes to the classic era, and I have learned so much from you guys. What I have learned has led me deeper and deeper into a glorious and intriguing cinematic past - and I have taken my lontime ladylove; kikcing and screaming at the start, with me.
She's still not a big fan of westerns (although she has her favorites), but she has been blown away by the likes of SUSPICION (1941), ON DANGEROUS GROUND (1951) and many many more (especially film noirs) films from another era. Plus, she is always especially excited when I tell her we will be watching a film starring either Bette Davis, Joan Crawford or Barbara Stanwyck, so I guess I have made a believer of her.
I am cynical at times, but if the truth be told I can going to miss reading posts by some some of the regulars on the Classic Film Board.
I look forward to seeing Donald Trump being voted out of office at the end of his first time. Please help your fellow Americans make it happen. God Bless America, and thank you Hollywood for the movies, old and new - they are the reason I get up in the morning.
Take care and be well Hobnob (and excuse all the grammatical and/or spelling errors in this rambling, but heartfelt post; it's Saturday morning in SA and I have much to do, so I haven't edited it).
The Dude abides.
PS. Sorry I never got back to you about LONELY ARE THE BRAVE. I feel somewhat differemntly about Kirk's character, and it would have been an interesting discussion.

How does she feel about westerns starring Barbara Stanwyck? I like hearing about when people have been "converted" and I especially like to hear about fellow fans of Stanwyck (I also love Joan Crawford and other ladies of the classic era).
I've mostly lurked here over the years, posting occasionally, but I've always enjoyed reading your posts and comments about classics as well as modern films. I'll miss reading what other people have to say more than actually saying anything myself because that's how I learn.
Happy trails to you!

Re: The End
I realize you are deeply traumatized and in shock over the upcoming shutdown of these boards Hobnob. But I am not going to pretend I am not hurt and saddened by the fact you clearly respect and like the clueless snsurone more than me. Is it because you can feel superior to her? Or, are still hoping to get a little action there one day? I mean, both of you are going to have a lot of time on your hands after February 20. smile emoticon.

Hello Old Ale,
Before we all say goodbye could you post - or post links - to the Yearly polls results for the 1950s and 1960s.
Sorry, I should have copied the results when they were up. But didn't think IMDB would disappear.
Thanks.

I despise Trump, but blaming him for the demise of this board is really, really, stupid.
ANd if Jeff Bezos is knuckling under to Trump,it sure as hell is not showing up in the content of the Washington Post.

Re: Favor
Sorry I didn't get back to you last night rc - LOTS of PMs and posts to go through - but as you can gromit is putting them up. Might be a few that don't make it right away because they need to be formatted properly but just about all of them should eventually make it before close.

Thanks Old Ale. Yes I saw that gromit is starting to do put them up. Its good they can saved for future reference.
Re: The End
The Film General board is being re-established on Reddit apparently https://www.reddit.com/r/IMDbFilmGeneral/ and will be moderated.
I plan on setting up an ICM account too.
Will be sending private message to you about staying in touch.

Re: The End
Very unfortunate. These IMDB boards were a good place to get info on the Classic Hollywood era. I mostly lurked this one, but I enjoyed reading the posts and liked hearing from people who were around during the era.
Re: The End
Yeah, I hope Reddit or some other forum can be a good place to discuss classic film.
Frankly, I'm not that upset. CFB has been dying for years - for whatever reason - and the other boards are infested with morons and trolls. For example, most of the posters on the Politics and sports boards seem to have been either 12 y/o or had an IQ of 80.
Even more sad are the specific movie boards which are overrun by dummies asking "Why did this happen?" or trolls.

Re: The End
Terrible news, idiotic decision. The main reason I come to IMDb is to talk on these boards. You also find lots of information as well as viewpoints. Trolls? Arguments? Sure. But friends and new takes on things more so. An incredibly shortsighted, mean and pointless decision. This will be the end of IMDb in any meaningful way, other than as a barren source of credits and spot news about nitwit celebrities.
PS: And think of all the posts and threads we'll never be able to see again in the time remaining, all the cut-off conversations, no more Garth games and the rest, no news or reviews about new releases, etc., etc., etc. This really is a huge loss for everybody.

Re: The End
Funny, I had almost decided to delete my account on 28 February, New Year's Eve in the old Roman calendar. I almost did it a year ago, on 29 February 2016, but at the end I just took an IMDb nine-month sabbatical holiday instead. Now I don't have to decide anything, for THIS IS THE END.

Re: The End
My interest in IMDB boards has been on the wane for about a year. The first page of my post history has posts from almost 2 years ago, which was never the case. Last weekend, I deleted some very old posts because I figured I'd start phasing myself out of here, but I guess IMDB will complete that process for me, LOL!
Re: The End
I will miss the polls should have saved them. I made a Facebook group. If you're on Facebook. I don't know how many people here are on Facebook, but it's a good place for groups. If you do Facebook, I will make you a moderator.

Re: The End
OldAle, I know that we have had our differences but I admire your deep love for film. Reading your film-related posts over the last few years has been a wonderful source of joy. Thank you for everything. The polls you oversaw are an element of my IMDb experience that I shall forever cherish. Your wisdom and insight offered a deeply enriching and rewarding adventure every time.
Wishing you happiness and health, in both life and movies. I might be a fool but I'm dreaming that this might all be a bad nightmare and might abate into a sunny day when a new morn comes to dawn. If it has faded to black for good, I can but thank you and close my eyes in happy remembrance. To film and to life!
Take care, Ale.
That's all, folks!

Re: The End
A stunning and heartbreaking decision after spending 16 years here.
Thanks to all the good souls who have shared their thoughts with kindness, generosity, and intelligence. I'll be forever grateful for the wonderful dialogues I've had here; for the things I've learned; for the knowledge I've been able to impart. I can't imagine not being able to come here and share the love of a lifetime with others who feel the same.
Farewell, kindred spirits. I wish you joy in the next part of your journey. Que Sera Sera.
The end is nothing; the road is all.

Re: The End
Sad news. These boards and some of the very knowledgeable people on here have played a major part in my "cinema education" over the past decade or so, not least the CFB polls. So thanks for those, OldAle, and everyone else who ran them. It's sad to see it all go.
Guess I'll have to settle with http://www.icmforum.com/ now.
Guess I'll have to settle with http://www.icmforum.com/ now.
Re: The End
How about ICM - http://www.icmforum.com/index/. It is not as comprehensive as IMDb with its many film/actor etc boards but it has better search facilities and people seem to be talking about films gasp! They have a separate Off-Topic forum as well so that the film section is about film and I note that one of their admins seems to be on the boards in different threads, which suggests a more active moderation process.
It would be great to see you posting on a forum of which I'm a member because like others I appreciate your thoughts on films.
But if not, adios and take care.
Ever tried, ever failed?
No matter.
Try again, fail again.
Fail better.

Re: The End
Worst news I've heard since November.
Re: The End
There was never any real-life human moderator.
They could have appointed one at least for the Classics Board and the board would have worked fine.
I wonder how much of this decision was based on current Hollywood's not liking what the average joe thinks of Hollywood's cinematic products
Yet none of these big institutional message boards are any good. The institution (in this case Amazon) doesn't care about individual posters. They're only interested in selling, tracking, fostering corporate objectives.
What needs to happen is for an individual to create a Classics film board, preferably at ProBoards.com, and appoint a couple of moderators.
As administrator for a non-film ProBoards board, I know how a message board needs to work. I have one moderator who helps. As a result trolls are quickly gotten rid of, no ads, the admin gets to organize the board any way they want. We have over a thousand members now and the board is very active. Some of us even know each others' phone numbers and we talk via landline/cellphone; it's that personal.
Our message board works because its creator cares about the topic, cares about the members, and takes an active part in the board's ongoing daily life.
