Re: Predict Oscar Winners 2017
Good picks.
Agree Stone looks good after SAG awards, but I just can't see the whole of the Academy passing on Portman. I hope Stone wins, though. Portman already won one.
And Hidden Figures has the momentum, sure, so definitely could win, but just can't see Moonlight cooling off that much.
Sticking with my original picks in these two.

Re: Predict Oscar Winners 2017
I realize that Portman is favored to win Best Actress but I think the movie was not well received.I think it will be either Emma Stone or Isabelle Huppert, although I have not seen Elle. I would bet on Emma Stone. I just think LLL is a favorite that will deliver.
Re: Predict Oscar Winners 2017
Still not sure on Best Picture
But I think the acting Wins will go like this
Best Actress: Emma Stone
Best Actor: Casey Affleck. Now way is Denzel beating him. Fences isn't one of main 3 serious Best Picture nominees
Best Supporting: Ali. Although don't be surprised if Bridges or Shannon cause an upset
Best Supporting Actress: Viola Davis. The one true Lovk this Awards Season

Re: Predict Oscar Winners 2017
Sorry, no way is Affleck beating Washington. That's a lock.
And the 3 serious BP contenders are not as solid as they used to be.
Hidden Figures has moved into the picture. MBTS and Moonlight have absolutely no shot to win after the SAG ensemble miss and most important PGA combined. They're both out.
Hacksaw Ridge has just as good a shot as them.
Agree on Bridgesbut think Ali will win in the end.

Re: Predict Oscar Winners 2017
Pretty much agree here across the board, except a Hidden Figures Best Picture win would be unprecedented (?) for a film that missed directing AND film editing nominations.
While the loss at SAG for MBTS and Moonlight seems to have doomed any chance of winning Best Picture, the real precursor is just to be nominated by SAG. Still, losing the PGA as well doesn't give them much hope.
Normally, the PGA isn't the best standalone guild precursor, but La La Land seems like a lock for DGA, too, which shows plenty of Best Picture support.

Re: Predict Oscar Winners 2017
Can you imagine HF won? it's alluring to pick; if nothing more it has a 50% shot from one angle, but those category misses for nominations lessen those. That would need an explanation, and may be political. Not to say it's not good and an underdog that can please the masses in some ways.
Shocked at how MBTS and Moonlight died off, and think that's the academy setting the stage and paving the way for LLL to as predicted break the SAG ensemble nom miss curse due to possessing no auxiliary cast. Stone winning actress at SAG solidifies that notion.

Re: Predict Oscar Winners 2017
The three total Oscar nominations for Hidden Figures is the fewest for the winner of SAG's Best Cast other than The Birdcage (1996), which received only one Oscar nomination. And the only film to win Best Picture while missing directing and editing nominations was Grand Hotel in 1932. I just don't see it happening this year with Hidden Figures. Not with La La Land's PGA and, likely, upcoming DGA win, and not to mention its across-the-board support by nearly every AMPAS branch.
Really, the only film with true precursor hope is Moonlight (SAG Best Cast nomination, plus Oscar nominations in directing, acting, editing, and writing). I think, though, its Best Picture chances are toast now that it lost at SAG and the PGA.
The preferential voting method used by PGA is very revealing, as AMPAS uses the same method in determining Best Picture. I have to figure the "top" preferences last year had to be very close between The Big Short (PGA win) and Spotlight (SAG win), and perhaps even The Revenant (DGA win).

Re: Predict Oscar Winners 2017
Agree with all of them except Actor (I doubt Affleck will lose enough steam to allow an upset by Denzel Washington. He wasn't even nominated for a BAFTA and it would seem strange for Manchester to walk away empty-handed of La La Land upsets screenplay), Actress (after SAG and GG I consider Stone a lock, but we'd have to see what happens at the BAFTAs) and for Original Screenplay, I still think Manchester is going to walk away with it, although I wouldn't at all be surprised by a La La Land upset.
