Under the Same Moon : WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
bcause they don't want americans to know mexicans can be wealthy and educated.
Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
to the above poster EXACTLY!!!
Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
agreed. also to know that mexicans can be both wealthy and educated will completely ruin every stereotype they have. and that's a big no-no ;)
Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
You have to have a market to sell the film most Amercians don't want to see, or even care about, "classy, educated, wealthy Mexicans that help improve the US Economy"
They'd rather know what Brangalina had for lunch.

Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
Mud dib, I understand your point and I've heard it before, but how would anyone know if Americans would like to see movies about "classy, educated, wealthy Mexicans," when that has not be available. Given the fact that Latinos are the largest minority in the US, it's quite possible that many of them would like to see examples of upper middle class Mexicans and other Latinos. Lots of people watch telanovas, which have Latinos of different classes. People of color get sick of seeing themselves depicted as broke down and struggling all the time, because it reinforces that image as the ONLY image. Of course there are wealthy, educated, classy Latinos, but to look at Latinos in American films, you'd never know that.
Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
Hey I didn't say it was right I just said that's how it is. I actually work for the first Spanish language theater openned in the United states so I do know there is a market for the type of films you are describing
That being said I think you are not looking at it in the right light. For example there are several Middle to High class latino roles that have been popping up over the last 20 years or so.
If you take a look historically Desi Arnaz played Ricky Riccardo on "I Love Lucy" and was the first Latino to achive real promonince in the American spotlight and he was protrayed as middle class in the 1950's and it wasn't produced by the Hollywood comunity.
More recently there has been George Lopez who played an upper middle class middle management type.
Andy Garcia tends to play upper class business types (see the oceans series) or even middle class (see Things to do in Denver, Jenifer 8, ect)
Salma Hayek portrayed Frida Kahlo perhaps not upper class but definatly someone of cultural importance.
"Love in the Time of Cholera" was all about a person who started on the bottom of the social ladder and climb thier way to prominence in the Columbian society.
Edward James Olmos portrayed a lower middle class teacher in "Stand and Deliver" and was certainly someone worth looking to as a role model in that role, and now has done an amazing performance in "Battlestar Galactica" as Admiral Adama.
The upper and middle class role models are there, perhaps not in the abundance you want, but it's a start. Remember that Hollywood is run by white christians and Jews who are looking at the bottom line, if it hasn't made tons of money before then they feel no need to risk their money to find out if it will now.
If you really want to see a good portrayal of upper and middle class Latinos then it will have to be produced by Latino's if you want to know why there are there so many more upper middle class roles for whites those movies are writen and produced by whites same goes for the black comunities, if it wasn't for Melvin Van Peebles writing and producing "Sweet Sweetbacks Badass song" who knows how long it would have been until blacks were portrayed as something other than subserviant to whites.
The door is open, and if you feel that strongly about it, write something seek out upper class Latino's to help you produce it (when you get there I know plenty of film crew people if you want some help). When it is done I can personally get you to a company that would be more than happy to get you into at least 4 large Latino markets If your all talk, then feel free to complain away but words alone don't change the world we live in.

Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
I agree with all of this. It'd also be nice to see positive images of lower- and working-class families and experience, and I think this is yet further off based on the above reasons.
I'm always frustrated that there is always the need to "legitimize" a minority ethnic/class group by portraying them as ambitious and financially successful. But to your point, maybe I should be writing movies as well.
Good post.

Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
Guys - look up, Latino Actors on Wikipedia - you'd be surprised who is actually Latino. There are more of us in the mainstream than you think. Many are more "Caucasian" than "Caucasian". This is beside the point. There are many movies out there about many people in many cultures. The movie is not about border crossing. It's a love story between a mother and her son. The movie, like so many movies is about conflict. It's about character development. The border in this movie only provided context. It's about a child's love for his mother and his mother love for the child, which transcends borders.
Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
You forgot Gabrielle, from Desperate Housewives, and her latino ex-husband. They both seem well off and are not discriminated by their race. *of course, their looks help a bit*
Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
You dont have to be "classy" or "wealthy" to improve the US economy. I know MANY of middle/lower class people who cross to Texas to shop downtown on weekends at Asian shops that sell everything for $1. This also contributes to the US economy. Many Mexicans also work hard to send their kids to private school in the adjacent US city. My mom is one of them. Get your head out of your ass and quit being so self-conscious, thinking that all people in the US must think we're poor, ignorant, starving or whatever other things your posts imply you think.
Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???

Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
Well.. read article and let me tell u some of the reasons.
First of all, felt identified with the article because I actually live in Monterrey, Mexico and commonly many people like my family and me go to Texas and buy many of our things there, standing long border hours so u can be identified and then go to Mcallen, Brownsville.. and even to South Padre Island instead of mexican beaches like Tampico or Matamoros (nearer and cheaper)
Hahaha.. and they wouldnt like to see us Mexicans as potential principal investors in certain border areas.. why should US citizens would be interested.?? The people around there is very friendly with us, maybe because of the same reason.. but that would be a loss of time for many americans to watch a movie and see that we help economy in a way.. that would be a way to admit that we can actually help them and believe me.. getting american visa takes long time, money and making an appointment with months before..
so I think that would be a good theme for a movie.. how hard its to go legally to USA?

Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
Is the same as ever, they like to show the wrold the Mexico that doesn't shows the truth, for example, movies involving mexican setting are always of people wearing sombreros (God, I haven't wore that even once in my life) and traveling on donkeys and all brown skinned and poor. They don't want to tell the world that we are a modern country, that there are 44 millions of white people and also cute "brown" people. And there are always cactus and deserts.

well mcfly, perhaps it is because: they are not classy at all; they have inherited wealth in a corrupt system which favors personal ties over performance and is one of the grossest forms of crony-capitalism on the planet.
9 times out of 10, when you encounter a rich person in mexico they are the scum of the earth. you are too stupid to see the difference, however.

Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
The majority of the comments on these board have missed the hidden message of the OP and many who agreed with him: that lower-class Mexicans somehow lesser, classier, illiterate by default. At least compared to their upper-class, who are none of these things (yeah right!). These are dumb, classist generalisations.
This film is a wonderful film about love and about real people. That's what matters, not how big or small their pocketbooks are. It's about the story and the characters. Also, goodness doesn't know socioeconomic barriers.
Furthermore, Mexico is not a monolithic country. It's a country with many different types of settings, people, religions, etc. There are general cultural and sociological structuresbut human value is not exclusive to any such of these groups.
In other words, anyone who kvetches about movies with lower-class, working people just because of their socieconomic statuses, rather than their heart's worth can sod offstarting with the OP.

Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
That would be really boring. To me a movie isn't very interesting without a decent conflict.
Re: WHY DONT FILM COMPANIES MAKE FILMS ABOUT THESE TYPE OF MEXICANS???
Well, this film was produced by, directed by and starring Mexicans (probably not poor or illegal ones) so why don't you ask them? If you can produce a compelling film about rich Mexicans going shopping, I promise to go and see it. (unless it' sin 3D)
