Re: Who is Grindelwald?

He's pretty much the Voldermort of the time period the movie takes place in (1920s), a strong and influential Dark Wizard. He's meant to be analoguous to Adolf Hitler in the Wizarding World, in that he wants wizards to be the most dominant class of humans, instead of muggles. He sees wizards as the superior class of humans.

He's been mentioned quite a few times in the Harry Potter series. He's best known as Dumbledore's former best friend, turned evil archrival that Dumbledore had to defeat in a famous and legendary duel.

Gellert Grindelwald is a VERY big deal. Like I said, he's the wizarding world's Hitler. The movie didn't do the best job of hyping up Grindelwald to the casual fan, but the movie creators are probably banking on the fact that people are already aware of him.

Re: Who is Grindelwald?

I wish they'd made this more clear. It's been a few years since the HP movies, I remembered his name but not much else about him.

Arthur, put the kettle on and dig out those lemon hand wipes.

Re: Who is Grindelwald?

In the beginning, didn't they show newspaper articles about him?

Re: Who is Grindelwald?

They did, but everything moves quick and it's impossible to read much of anything.

Re: Who is Grindelwald?

Right! It will be something to pause and read on DVD/Blu-Ray.

Re: Who is Grindelwald?

He is mentioned several times during the movie, for example when "Graves" interrogates Newt.

Re: Who is Grindelwald?

Grindelwald appeared at the beginning, not just in the newspapers. Him taking out 5 Aurors is the first thing we see. He's also mentioned throughout

Re: Who is Grindelwald?

We first see him right at the very beginning taking out about 5 wizars with just one spell like it's nothing clearly implying this guy is very dangerous - which is then confirmed with the newspaper articles we see were they mention his attacks in Europe and all the mayhem he's causing. Then of course we also have headlines like "Where is Grindelwald?".
We also hear about him several times throughout the film, specifically during Newt's interrogation scene. Then of course when it's revealed who Grindelwald was the whole time you have to remember that he's actually been in the movie quite a bit and just judging by his actions you pretty much know exactly who he is and where he's coming from when he talks about why he's doing the things he does.

All of this and yet you still say you only learnt about his existence at the very end just makes it very clear you didn't actually pay enough attention to the movie you are watching.

Re: Who is Grindelwald?

He's also mentioned throughout the Harry Potter books, as well as when they tell us Dumbledore's backstory.
