Fences : Voila's runny nose was off putting!
Re: Voila's runny nose was off putting!
It was. Plus, the use of the n word, overkill.
Re: Voila's runny nose was off putting!
The use or overuse of the N words was true to Troy's character; lots of black men, then and now, use it excessively in reference to each other. It's also directly from the original stage play's script.
Re: Voila's runny nose was off putting!
I can agree it was a bit distracting, BUT it's also a sign Viola Davis was tapping into real emotion and not just faking the tears. She's the real deal. Yes, her nose was running. Yes, it wasn't pretty, but it wasn't supposed to be. It was real, deeply felt emotion, which was absolutely right for the scene and the character.

^^and THIS!
I read this play back in High School, and the N-word is used quite a bit. This wasn't just for "shock value". People really did speak like that back then (and still do), and the play also had quite a bit of language in it.
It was pretty much pretty spot on with the play.
I'm just glad to finally see it on the big screen.

Seems like that's something she can't help. I agree though it was distracting.

I notice she does that in her role on How To Get Away With Murder too. she just lets it drip.
Re: Voila's runny nose was off putting!
I agree it was really gross and distracting, but she's a great actress.
Actors are useless without the power of a good writer's imagination

Re: Voila's runny nose was off putting!
She also did it in Doubt.
Re: Voila's runny nose was off putting!
She's an actress who really let's things fly in a very emotional moment. I've noticed she also does this a lot on How to Get Away with Murder. I feel it always works though because it's always in scenes where her character is so beaten down she really couldn't even give a care what's going on with her face.

Re: Voila's runny nose was off putting!
However, her runny nose during the emotional scenes where Troy reveals that he's been unfaithful distracted mealmost taking me out of the reality of the imaginary world they'd created. During her close ups, all I could think was "please wipe your nose, Woman."
Really? Her husband of 18 years walks in and surprises her by saying he was about to be father and the concern is that while she is speaking directly to her husband of 18 years in a passionate moment of anger - with no one else around, she should wipe her nose while her world is falling down around her. Yeah, this would never happen in the reality. Tears should roll down her cheeks and her makeup should remain flawless.
My date last night was awful. And then he wouldn't even spend the night.
Re: Voila's runny nose was off putting!
It would be better if there just wasn't a close up of it.
Re: Voila's runny nose was off putting!
I hope you never feel real emotion then OP. Because you won't give much of a care about a running nose at that point.
Re: Voila's runny nose was off putting!
Watching a closeup of snot running from an actor's nose is the equivalent of a closeup of an actor taking a *beep* yes, it's real lifepeople *beep* and their noses sometimes run when they get emotional, but no one wants to see that on film. It's gross.
Re: Voila's runny nose was off putting!
Then watch some Superhero movies if you don't like reality on film. This is not the picture for you.
