There were six of them, and they were lucky enough to cash in on the 3-D gimmick at exactly the right time, which made the last couple really big internationally. Up until then, they'd always done very mediocre business, and continue to do so in the States. Over half of that billion dollars is the international take of the last three movies alone, so to be touting the SERIES as a huge success is bending the truth a little, because 4 and 5 were the only ones that performed like blockbusters overall. The others just kind of added up. I'm sure if there's ever another Warcraft movie (which is doubtful, because it would die in the IS), it could probably make THAT the most successful video game movie franchise ever, which just goes to show what a meaningless accomplishment that is to someone that wasn't even keeping score.

From a nation who, in an attempt to stop sparrows eating their grain, nearly rendered the said bird extinct (see: Mao's "The Four Pests Campaign"), thereby bringing on an insect plague that led to the starvation of ~30 million people (inc. resultant mass cannibalism!), it's hardly surprising that brain-dead schlock sells over there.

Just pray the 'Chinese mindset' stays corralled in China Otherwise, real life may start imitating Resident Evil 'art'.
