Who said anything about an exact replica? His point is that the existing series of films have been based on the games loosely at best, so a more faithful series of movies would be cool and fresh.

To elaborate: I agree that a clone of the game, made to live action, would be pointless and boring. However, it would be fun to have movies crafted more faithfully to the story that the game(s) follow, and I would also expect and appreciate some creative liberties along the way if those movies ever get made.

Game of Thrones, for example, has had success and been able to keep a fresh but familiar show by straying from the books at times. On the opposite end of the spectrum is World War Z, a movie which basically is only related to the book by the title. The current Resident Evil movies are a lot closer to the World War Z end of the spectrum than the Game of Thrones end, and if there ever is a new Resident Evil movie series it would cool to have that trend reversed.
