The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years : A Hollywood Bio-Pic?

A Hollywood Bio-Pic?

As much as I hate chlichd bio-pics of entertainers, I think I'd make an exception for a Beatles pic if it was directed by Howard or someone of his stature. (Clint Eastwood need not apply.) I find it amazing that this hasn't been done yet. I can vaguely recall a low-budget tv-movie or something from the70's?'80's? But I'm talking about a bigtime film, along the lines of, say, "Ray" or "Walk the Line."

Re: A Hollywood Bio-Pic?

Although Clint Eastwood hasn't ever made any documentaries that I know of, I'm not sure what your objection would be. He is one of the better filmmakers out there. You don't stick around as long as he has if you don't have genuine talent.

Re: A Hollywood Bio-Pic?

Because he is a right-wingnut. Do you think his politics are appropriate for a Beatle bio? He is not of the generation the Beatles most appealed to whereas Ron Howard is. Eastwood would never be interested in doing this project anyway. Why would he be?

The best work Eastwood ever did was as Rowdy in "Rawhide".

Re: A Hollywood Bio-Pic?

Right wingers outside the US have no idea what a joke they are, and hated they've become, to the rest of the world.

Re: A Hollywood Bio-Pic?

I probably shouldn't have singled out Eastwood. My objection to his directing has nothing to do with his politics, as another poster may have assumed. (And it's only an "objection" to a proposed Beatles dramatized bio-pic which I have totally made up.) I just find that Eastwood's direction is frequently pretty pedestrian, with little style. Not bad, but I wouldn't consider him a great director. Successful, certainly. And there is nothing wrong with that. My reason for singling him out in reference to my fantasy Beatles bio-pic was my disappointment with Jersey Boys. It was touted as a "musical"; a screen version of the Broadway show. It ended up being just another formula show-biz bio-pic that could have been made-for-TV (back when that was not a good thing.)

(So, if this gets into a flame war, as frequently happens on these boards, I'll happily delete my post.)

Re: A Hollywood Bio-Pic?

Have you seen George Harriso Living in the Material World? Direct by Martin Scorcese

Re: A Hollywood Bio-Pic?

Yes.that documentary was incredible!

Re: A Hollywood Bio-Pic?

As far as a bio-pic, I think it would need to be a miniseries. Preferably about 15 hours overall.

Re: A Hollywood Bio-Pic?

Yes, I have seen it, and it is great. However, I was referring to a "Hollywood bio-pic"; a film with actors, script, etc., not a documentary. I've nothing against documentariesin fact, I like them quite a bitit's just that I would find a big budget dramatization of their story pretty interesting. (Or, of course, pretty disappointing. :)

Re: A Hollywood Bio-Pic?

Would it be Backbeat ? 1994

Re: A Hollywood Bio-Pic?

Something along this line has already been done although it is confined to a vacation in Spain that John and Brian Epstein took together in 1963. The film is entitled "The Hours and Times" released in 1991. Of course it is controversial although I'm a member of the "Never Consummated" school of thought.

Re: A Hollywood Bio-Pic?

I'd like to see a really good film about The Beatles, there are a few made for TV things but they're all pretty mediocre like the one that focuses on John and Stu in Hamburg.
