Lost in Austen : Darcy's treatment of Amanda
Re: Darcy's treatment of Amanda
Yes, he tells her that it's because "she is not a maid" in other words, not a virgin.

And yet, they do end up together in the end.

Unbelievablyinexplicablyimplausiblythey do.
Re: Darcy's treatment of Amanda
Re the scene where he says she's not a maid I think her saying she's practically lived with Michael for a year just confirms to Darcy what Caroline has already told him. So he did have some idea beforehand, he just wanted to hear it from Amanda herself.

Christeline said:
"In one scene he is telling her that she repels him, that she is an abomination, and shortly aferwards is grabbing her and about to kiss her."
It was surprising that, after insulting Amanda, Darcy tries to kiss her, but after watching the series several times, I've come to understand Darcy better.
I think he is both repelled and attracted to Amanda at the same time. There is so much about her to which he objects, but she has gotten under his skin, nevertheless. When he confronts her at the Collins' house on the evening of her arrival there, he is at his whits end trying to unravel his contradictory emotions.
He begins by blaming her for tormenting him, but when she sets the record straightthat he sought her out and not the other way aroundhe has to face the truth: she moves him deeply.
When she turns to leavedismissing him, essentiallyshe has removed his last excuse for resisting her (she is not 'after' him, as he had thought). His need of her stands naked before him and his passion erupts in an attempted embrace. I give Amanda high marks for reminding him of his saner intentionsto remain true to his character as a gentleman, although she was protecting Lizzy's higher claim to him and did not know she loved him at that moment. If she had known it, I think that scene would have been something to behold!

Indeed, that would have been quite a scene!
I love this version of the 'Hunsford confrontation', it's so passionate.

Wow!!!! That was a beautiful analysis you wrote, thank so much for it. I only just now saw it, I wish I had seen it sooner.
I'm rewatching the movie right now, and just love this version of Darcy. If I have any more questions, I sure as heck know who to ask :)

Thanks, Christeline! I'm assuming you were referring to my post? I've watched this version many times and still love it, especially Elliot Cowan's portrayal of Darcy!
I'm no expert by any measure, but if you wish to talk about this mini-series, I would be happy to chat with you! This board has been deserted for years, so I was happy to see your posts.

Re: Darcy's treatment of Amanda
I posted another question on a new thread; if you wouldn't mind taking a look? Thanks so much.

Darcy's treatment of Amanda
Also, regarding the scene at the lake where he asks about her past, she mentions living with Michael for a year. Is this why he rejects her or did I miss something else?
Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
