Classic Film : The official CFB 2016 poll! CLOSED!

The official CFB 2016 poll! CLOSED!

Welcome to the CFB poll for the year 2016! I run this poll slightly differently than the yearly polls as you may know them. Since there are always many holdover films from previous years, I am not as strict on dates. The rule is that any film released in the 2016 calendar year in your area is eligible (most release dates for all countries can be found on a film's IMDb front page). The cutoff for this is two years. Please do not include any films with IMDb dates earlier than 2014. No films that made our top 20 the previous year will be counted. I am truly sorry if Carol didn't open in your country until April of 2016, but it got plenty of recognition last year and doesn't need to be mentioned again (the poll results from last year will be listed near the top of the thread). Also feel free to include films that might rollout into your area before the poll ends. Please don't include January 2017 releases. We all know Monster Trucks is going to be awesome, but it will get its chance next year.

The poll will run for about a month, and end on February 5th at midnight, IMDb time (this isn't going to be super strict, but all lists are finalized when I begin counting the morning of Feb 5).

Choose your top 20 (or fewer) films of 2016. Please indicate whether your list is ranked or unranked. If ranked, your top film will receive 20 points, your second place will receive 19 and so forth. If unranked, each of your films will receive 10.5 points (the average amount of points if you had used all 20 of your slots ranked).

We also rank performances for this poll. Others (not 100% solidified yet, we'll need at least one more counter if anyone is interested; clayton has already volunteered). 10 spots are allowed for the categories Best Lead Actor, Best Lead Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.

Please save your ballots, along with any updates. It will be kind of pointless for me to save everyone's lists, since, unlike the older yearly polls, your 2015 ballot is likely to change over the course of the month. Keep checking in to make sure the poll has remained intact. I'll post a link in my profile. If it disappears for any reason, I will repost it. I will try to keep it alive no matter what.

zetes' spot! Update 2/1 - Morris from America

1/8 - Added Janelle Monae from Hidden Figures to Supporting Actress

1/9 - Added Barry to the top 20 list and switched a couple of things around on it. Also added its star, Devon Terrell, to the Best Actors list.

1/15 - Added Silence, which was just masterful, easily one of Scorsese's best works. Also added Andrew Garfield in Best Actor (this blows away his gollygoshgee performance in Hacksaw Ridge) and Issei Ogata in Supporting Actor. I could have easily added Tadanobu Asano, Shinya Tsukamoto, Adam Driver and Yosuke Kubuzuka, as well. All are just fantastic. Unfortunately, as is common with Scorsese, the women of the picture are very secondary (there were more major roles for women in the 1974 Japanese version), but oh well.

1/20 - Added 20th Century Women, which lands near the bottom of my top 20. It doesn't entirely gel, but it's a wonderful collection of scenes. Bening is wonderful (and makes my list), but the gem of the cast is Greta Gerwig, who gives her best performance since Frances Ha. Elle Fanning is also excellent, her best of three very good performances this year, and both made my supporting actress list.

1/21 - Added Koreeda's wonderful Our Little Sister, but unfortunately, I placed it at spot #20 and couldn't raise it any higher. Also added Jarmusch's Paterson to the honorable mentions.

1/25 - Although I watched it on Sunday, I haven't gotten around to adding 13th to my list until this morning. It's exceptional, though. Everyone should watch it.

1/28 - Added O.J. Simpson: Made in America. Took me a few days, but I watched it in huge chunks when I watched it. Very addictive, and, obviously, such a remarkable tale told extremely well.

2/1 - Added Morris from America to the top 20, switched some stuff around, and added a couple of actors from Morris to the list.

1. The Witch (Robert Eggers)

Re: Ale's spot

I saw La La Land a few days ago. I liked it okay, but felt it was too much empty nostalgia. The lead performances are very good, though, and I was saddened that Emma Stone ranked below my top 10. Like last year, it was a strong year for actresses.

You know who else was just following orders? HITLER!

Re: Ale's spot

It was a heckuva lot more than "empty nostalgia" for me, I think - though who knows? When you've seen as many films as either of us have seen, it's hard to find something "new", at least when it comes to conventional narrative films. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what it adds up to. At any rate, I've seen it twice and will likely see it at least twice more while it's still playing - the particular charge I got out of it is something I can't remember feeling since Defending Your Life, 25 years ago.

Be true, Unbeliever.

Re: Ale's spot

There are some very original films this year, like, for instance, The Witch and The Handmaiden. Among several others, those feel like something I've never seen before. I have a review coming tomorrow, so you can read more there.

You know who else was just following orders? HITLER!

Re: Ale's spot

Haven't seen The Witch but I wouldn't call The Handmaiden all that original as a narrative; perhaps having a lot of sex in this kind of story-told-from-different-angles narrative is something new, but otherwise the concept certainly goes back to Rashomon and probably earlier. Not that I'm complaining, I think it was very good and in fact it's one I suspect I'll like more on another viewing - but I remember feeling at the end like it wasn't in fact as new or fresh as I'd hoped for, as it seemed at first. And in many respects it's a straight line from Park's earlier films (especially JSA) to this one.

Anyway "originality" is overrated. Like NOLAN. And chocolate.

Be true, Unbeliever.

Re: Ale's spot

I don't know of any film that's pulled off the narrative tricks of alternate points of view as well as The Handmaiden. There's that glorious moment when you finally know for sure that, yes, the one woman does in fact love the other and wasn't conning her that's just rapturous.

It's a documentary on Stallone, you really should check it out! But since I doubt it's going to any other votes, I'll switch to Eye In The Sky instead.

Re: The official CFB 2016 poll!

I remember last year (or maybe it was even the year before) I wasn't able to count your list because you didn't organize it in a way I could figure out what you wanted me to count. If you forget to come back and edit, I'll probably just count your top listed entry as your #1 and count down to #20. I try to count everyone's list, even if they don't get it edited in a discernable fashion, if I can.

Re: The official CFB 2016 poll!

This is a great poll for people like me, who want to separate the wheat from the chaff before we plonk down some hard earned $$$ on a DVD or movie ticket.

My choices for 2016? Sorry, I don't have any - yet. hacksaw ridge and Hail Caesar were both disappointing.

Re: The official CFB 2016 poll!

I've mentioned MoviePass to you before. You might want to check it out. I have no clue where you live, but in some areas I think it's as little as $25. Of course, few have the kind of stomach for garbage that I do. I see a lot more bad movies using it! Plus, it doesn't cover the arthouse movies, which sucks! Anyway, I'm glad to know the poll is useful to you even if you can't participate.

You know who else was just following orders? HITLER!

Thanks, I appreciate it. Haven't found it where I live - yet. I'll keep on trying because its a great way to see films.

It's true not all movie theaters take it. Check out their website: www.moviepass.com/

rocean, you hit the nail on the head. Love these polls because then I can go find the films that won and watch those. Saves much money.

Busan Girl.

Hi Frazer,I hope you are having a good weekend, and got to say the that is a terrific list, with you giving space to the mainstream (Conjuring,Arrival) and the alt (Tickled,Santoalla.)

Being impatient for it to hit DVD/Blu next week, (plus, also getting plenty of free time for the first time in weeks!)I finally caught Train to Busan today, and wow mate, what a superb movie. Two things I really liked was how confined the director made the train look, and also how the (mostly) single setting never ran out of steam, thanks to the writer always putting new dangers on the tracks.

Although he does not see that many Asia flicks,I was wondering if you think Busan is a flick that Spike would enjoy?

Watching it as a 2016 zombie double bill,I was wondering if you have seen The Girl With All The Gift? I found it to be an excellent, slightly Ex_Machina British Drama Horror.

Looking at my ratings over the last 5 or so years,I was wondering what your take is on how the 2010's have been for Horror? My take is that in the 90's the genre hit a low point until the late 90's,when Scream and J-Horror picked things up. Whilst things got more active with Gorno and remakes,I feel that the early-mid 2000's was an indecisive time for the genre, due to the remakes stopping the big studios from risking original work, and the indie scene having guys like Eli Roth doing "tribute" movies, which despite pushing the gore, would cut to a joke instead of a shock. For a turning point,I would say the arrival of Blumehouse with PA1 really hit a chord when the low-budget Insidious beat Scream 4 at the box office, which I feel has help usher in the best half decade and a bit for Horror since the 80's.

Re: Busan Girl.

Alright there mate. That's great that you enjoyed Train to Busan. I thought it was such a kinetic movie that benefited from having great characters too.

That's the second time in a week that I have been given The Girl with the Gift as a recommendation. Will defo have to check it out.

I fully agree with you that the 90's, specifically the mid-90's was a real low point in the horror genre. There was a real dearth of worthwhile movies. It seems that the genres of the day were crime, action and psychological thrillers but horror had kind of ran out of ideas at that point. Fast-forwarding to the 2010's, well quite honestly, I don't think I am too much of an expert so I am unsure how good things are. I've seen a few good ones, occasional ones which were excellent, but I am not sure overall how it compares to the 2000's. It seems quite similar to me in terms of quality on the whole.

Not sure I like Horace & Pete up there. I've been meaning to check it out, but from what I understand it was a weekly show that was meant to be renewed for a second season, but it cost too much.

Re: spot of Perception

Admittedly 'Horace and Pete' wasn't announced as a mini-series from the start from what I gathered, but C.K. overall gave out very little information about what the hell this thing is that he is distributing through his own website without any notable promotion. It was a fairly experimental endeavor for C.K and for all I know he didn't even know himself where or when he wanted it to end, but as it approached its concluding episodes I think it certainly did feel like a self-contained thing, and I don't expect any more episodes to follow. Ultimately I certainly consider it to be a mini-series and I haven't heard anything about that the primary reason it's finished is because of money issues. C.K. financed the whole thing out of his own pocket, which most importantly means that he has total control over it, and he said that he is finished with the project, so I'll take that as the final word on it.

From what I heard he lost a bunch of money on it. Anyway, I'll check it out over the course of the month and make a ruling on it later on.

Just for the record book zetes, if you had seen Louis C.K.'s brilliant, one-of-a-kind tragi-comedy HORACE & PETE you would realize it is a one-off and that after the shocking ending there could never be a follow-up. All the episodes are different lengths and it tells a story that ends.

So I've been watching Horace & Pete

No, it's not allowed. It's a TV series. Sure, not a conventional one, but it would fit in fine on Netflix (and is fitting in fine on Hulu).

You know who else was just following orders? HITLER!

Re: So I've been watching Horace & Pete

(smile emoticon) Oh dear, I wasn't going to vote for HORACE & PETE, but now I am contemplating slotting it in at number one on my ballot as a protest vote. I fecking loved it so.

I am only jesting becauase I generally don't vote for TV series and documentaries on the annual poll. That said, I will be voting for the searing 13th and the sprawling, brilliant O.J. MADE IN AMERICA this year, because they are simply stunning films and, like ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST and THE WILD BUNCH, they transcend genre. So many good films this year.

Funny thing, though. There are going to be a lot more TV and cable TV-series coming into the frame in the next few years. Because, sooner rather than later, it is only going to be sci-fi blockbusters, superhero trash and big budget garbage at the movies, and all the cool stuff will be made for TV and cable TV. The movies as we know them are going to be a thing of the past one of these days.

God, that Korean title for the Hong Sang-soo movie is crazy long. I wonder what it literally means.

You know who else was just following orders? HITLER!

Re: The official CFB 2016 poll!

I understand that the English title is a faithful and fairly literal translation of the original Korean title, notwithstanding the syllable differential.

Re: The official CFB 2016 poll!

It looks like a full sentence, not a title!

You know who else was just following orders? HITLER!

Re: The official CFB 2016 poll!

It is the same title, as a sentence: "It's right now, and then it's wrong.".

The film is possibly the response of Hong San-soo to those who criticize him for making the same movie over and over (this time basically repeating the first half with subtle variations in the second half), it certainly deserved a long sentence to say little.

Re: The official CFB 2016 poll!

Not that I have anything much to add to the list:

1. Knight of Cups
2. Captain Fantastic
3. Into the Inferno
4. Before the Flood
5. A.D. 1363, the End of Chivalry

I suppose episodes from miniseries are not eligible?

"You see things; and you say Why? But I dream things that never were and I say Why not?"

Re: The official CFB 2016 poll!

I would say music videos aren't eligible, either. TV movies and miniseries are eligible - I'm less happy about the latter but that has always been precedent (I'll reserve to right to reject them, though). You have to list the whole miniseries, though, not an individual episode. Like American Crime Story should be eligible,

I don't mean to be too argumentative Zetes and I don't think any music video would actually feature in my top twenty but I do certainly believe they should be a category allowed in a poll such as this. They are in essence short films/videos made to accompany music with roots that go as far back as Dulac and Kirsanoff in the 1920s and 1930s. So, yes, I think they should be allowed. I'd be interested as to why you deem them inadmissable.

Happy New Year! Looking forward to watching quite a few wonderful recent films over the course of the next month.

That's all, folks!

Re: music videos

What about commercials? They are essentially short films, too. No, I'm not counting them.

Re: music videos

Well, it's your prerogative to accept what you deem suitable. I suppose I'd even be open to commercials as long as there was some element of artistry or ingenuity to them. Advertising though isn't necessarily as inextricably linked to art and culture as music is. That's why I'd be in favour of consideration being extended to them. Anyhow, it's a moot point now. Thanks for the response.

That's all, folks!

Re: The official CFB 2016 poll!

Oh, ok. I haven't seen the entire mini-series so that's the problem but the episode I watched was great. Only including entire mini-series is for the better though.

I'm with Roger in that music-videos should count, some of them are really excellent, like Sabotage (Beastie Boys), Thriller (Michael Jackson) or Elastic Heart (Sia). Sometimes even highly acclaimed directors do them, Lars von Trier did one for Sigur Ros, Jonze made Sabotage, John Landis made Thriller and PTA made Daydreaming. However you run the poll, so just cross them off my list.

Re: My lists (ranked)

I'm not familiar with Don't Think Twice, Other People, or The Love Witch, but they sure sound good, films that I'd be interested in seeing. Have they had a general release or just Film Festival showings because I don't remember them having played here?

No love for Casey Affleck or Lucas Hedges from Manchester by the Sea?

Re: My lists (ranked)

Thanks for the response. All 3 of the films you asked about have received fairly limited releases. Except Don't Think Twice did manage to get up to 200 theatres I believe and has a major company (Universal?) handling the US DVD distribution.

I think of the 3 you would like Other People and Don't Think Twice. Both appealed to me because they're about comedy writers dealing with sadness and/or angst.

The Love Witch is an oddity. I admired the director's audacity trying to recreate the stilted look and feel of a 70s drive-in adult film that has supernatural touches. It's kind of intentionally bad but that's Anna Biller's approachto paint these movies as ridiculous. She also does everything on her filmsthe sets, costumes, the script.

Affleck: I thought he did a good job, but he's pretty much the same in every film. Hedges: the supporting actor category was very very strong this year. He came in 11th or 12th place for me. My putting CJ Wilson in over him is political I'll admit it: Wilson gives a key underrated performance in the movie and wasn't even included in the SAG Best Ensemble Award (meanwhile Matthew Broderick was for what was essentially a cameo). I like to use these lists as shout outs to the underdogs.

Re: My lists (ranked)

Thanks for calling my attention to these films. I will keep an eye out for them. Most films get here sooner or later. I would not have chosen CJ Wilson over Hedges but I also like underdogs.
