Classic TV: The 60s : Best TV show of the 60's

Best TV show of the 60's

mine: The Andy Griffith Show

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

My favourite 1960s TV series is a forgotten British series called "Marriage Lines". Either that, or the Australian series "Homicide". My favourite American series of the 1960s is "Bewitched", strangely enough.

Not sure which 1960s series I'd consider to be best though.

I want a signature involving brave swordsmen, kinescopes, and soft drinks

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

The really enduring and still influential - and extremely entertaining - is................................................................................................................................................................Star Trek: The Original Series.

Accept no substitutes.

In second place: Mission:Impossible.

Re: BEST tv show of the 60s!…

Star Trek: The Original Series.

'Mission: IMPOSSIBLE' is also GREAT!

I'd say Star Trek.

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

The Prisoner!

'Combat'

The long running TV series made in the 60's and re-broadcast throughout the 80's, called simply COMBAT, (I'm not shouting, I remember this title in striking red capitals on a black background).
I watched this on TV as a youth and was impressed by the depth & range in storylines, great acting and enough action to keep it faithful to the title... but I think most of all the show addressed issues such as battle fatigue/shell shock (now known as PTSD), the discipline required for duty and other emotive topics or sub-plots without leaving a bad taste in your mouth after watching each episode.
For all those that have served, to all those who serve today and all those still to serve... My deepest respects.

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

3 personal favorites -

1) NAKED CITY
2) THRILLER
3) THE FUGITIVE

Great Writing & Acting

Excellent Casting

Many later movies & TV ripped stories and plots from these.

Hard to say, I guess NAKED CITY rules .

The Beverly Hillbillies (up until the last 2 or 3 seasons) - It constantly made me laugh out loud, something few other series managed to do

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

There were so many great shows during the '60s, it's hard to choose. It was the best TV decade ever!

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

My favorite 60's and all time: The Twilight Zone.

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

I have to agree that Twilight Zone was the greatest show of the 60s

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

I agree with "The Twilight Zone." That it premiered on October 2, 1959 and its first dozen episodes were first broadcast before the turn of the decade is just a technicality.

mf

Trust me. I’m The Doctor.

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

my vote goes to Perry Mason

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

Bonanza was the show my parent always watched, espeically my father. But, I used to watch the reruns of Star Trek, The Munsters, and Get Smart.

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

Finally, someone mentioned "Get Smart," one of the funniest shows ever. It's also my fav w/Andy Griffith Show in 2nd.

I hate it when I’m singing along to a song, and the artist gets the words wrong.

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

Yeah, I liked that show as well. I always tried to whistle that themes song, but could never get it right For some reason, I used to whistle the Gomer Pyle theme as well, but couldn't that one either.....

The Twilight Zone
The Munsters
The Addams Famly
The Flintstones

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

The Champions (British series)

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

Nearly all of the spy shows, from the ridiculous (Man from UNCLE, Wild Wild West) to the sublime (Secret Agent, The Prisoner). The world was just a more fun place back when these types of shows had their cachet.

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

The Prisoner was one of my favorite series as well. But when you look at the premise, it is more ridiculous than sublime.

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

I wouldn't call The Prisoner ridiculous. Many aspects of the show were quite farfetched but the over riding theme was always serious. Bizarre or surreal might be a better description.

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

I found what was then called a "midget" running around in a bowler hat and giving orders more ridiculous than serious.

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

The Judy Garland Show
The Lucy Show

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

It's a Man's World 1962-63 directed by Peter Tewksbury, Hal Todd and Lamont Johnson was my favorite TV show of the 60s and maybe ever. Four struggling young men living unsupervised on a houseboat called “The Elephant” in Ohio does not sound like the ingredients for a successful television series. If you judge success by ratings and longevity, the series was a failure. It lasted only one year and 19 episodes, but when it was canceled by NBC, the cancellation caused the biggest protest that TV land had ever seen.

According to writer Kerry Prechter, “NBC received thousands of letters protesting the show's cancellation. Fans sent elegiac poems and accused the network of implicit censorship. One writer asked the NBC executive Walter D. Scott, ''When a sprig of green appears in the wasteland, must you run out and chop it down?”

Unlike the typical TV idealized teen drama about upper-class twits living in the suburbs, it was a comedy/drama that was far ahead of its time in dealing with real issues in the transition from adolescence to adulthood in an honest and intelligent way, including those of adolescent sexuality.

James Brooks, director of Terms of Endearment, said that the show ''felt utterly real, and you believed every minute of it, it had a sense of purpose, and you get how good the characters are. It's as though Tewksbury gave everybody a license to have integrity.'' ''I think,” he said, “it was singular, something that was there and was gone. It was so much a personal way of seeing life that no one else could have repeated it.''

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

Probably the greatest decade in tv history. But the best of the best has to be Star Trek.

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

It is very difficult for me to go against Star Trek, but The Fugitive absolutely enthralled me. I would go down into the basement and throw myself around like I was Kimble fighting off the bad guys. The One-Armed Man is one of the most brilliant TV concepts ever, but the real genius was that he almost never appeared in the first three B&W seasons (only 4 eps out of 90!). Best TV show ever, and one of the most influential. The Theme music still thrills me to the max.

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

Propably not the best as I wasn't there to to Watch 60s tv but I'm obsessed with Bonanza, I always come back to that show. High Chapparal is lovely too.

Re: Best TV show of the 60's

Comedy: Green Acres, Andy Griffith, Dick Van Dyke, Get Smart
Sci-Fi: Star Trek, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits

But Green Acres is my favorite because the comedy was surreal and the cast was great.
