Taboo : Feel like taking a shower

I like the authenticity of the greasy grimy London streets of the 1800s and the vulgarity of the people with their yellow teeth and bad hygiene. But can't help being a little skeeved with it.

The American Wild West of the early 19th century was probably not much better. Chewing tobacco, spittoons, etc. I can't help feeling sorry for Saloon working girls who had to, ahem, 'service' cowboys who probably hadn't bathed for weeks or months on end. The thought of it all makes my skin crawl too. Ugh!

In Westworld there was actually a phrase from one of the hookers to a customer, that the price is this much, but less if you bathe first.

Me three! Also pretty much think James is the scummiest of them all. He's raping his sister supernaturally at this point I wonder why I keep watching. That blow to the head splits his scull he gets stabbed yet in both cases he's just fine. WTF were the writers thinking with that BS.

This show offers a good contrast to Victoria, which is now on Masterpiece in America. While the truly wealthy and more importantly the royals lived in fairly clean conditions the rest of the world was rather filthy.

The lack of filth is a problem I had with Showtime's The Tudors and The Borgias. In the Borgias the costumes were always clean, and you have to wonder who was doing the laundry!

Starz's Black Sails shows some of the filth but all the pirates have white teeth and mostly decent skin. I doubt years at sea would everyone looking so good. Spartacus had the same problem with gladiators with perfect teeth. I think most of their teeth would be chipped and broken!

In the old west=, they stretched canvas across the foot of the bed for cowboys who didn't take their boots off in a bordello. On Deadwood there was an extra charge for hot clean water for a bath. It was a luxury and the price got cheaper if you took a bath in twice or even three times used water.

I had to go and wash my hair immediately after watching an episode of Deadwood.

Fortunately, we are a smidge better these days than they were on The Knick. The average American house is cleaner than their OR theater.

The Knick was hair-raising in how crude medicine at the beginning of the 20th century. I remember a similar show about those early days when a doctor dropped a scalpel and wiped it off on his suit coat in the OR. One doctor wore the same jacket for good luck in the OR. It was crusted with dried blood.

I agree. Deadwood is another show that makes me want to take a shower.

Another show that focuses on the more gritty aspects of the time period in question.

I love both.

I hate to break it to ya but London's streets and teeth havent changed much.
