Rings : Continuity error?
Re: Continuity error?
Rings ignores The Ring Two except for reusing Evelyn's name. In The Ring Two Evelyn was found wandering the streets eight months pregnant, was taken in by a shelter, and gave birth to Samara (and tried to kill her) at said shelter. In Rings Evelyn was kept under the church by the priest and gave birth to (and tried to kill) Samara there. Obviously the two backstories are incompatible.
Re: Continuity error?
Ok, thanks. After reading other threads on this board, it seemed pretty clear that they were ignoring the events of The Ring Two. Which I don't mind too much since I didn't think it was a very good film, but the two different backstories for Evelyn are a bit confusing.
Re: Continuity error?
Didn't 'Rings' also show Evelyn's corpse buried inside a wall of the priest's house???( Movie was utter crap and a waste of time, btw.)
Re: Continuity error?
That was Samara's corpse. He moved it there from the cemetery after the flood. Rings never says what happened to Evelyn.
Re: Continuity error?
They didn't ignore part 2.
Re: Continuity error?
How is that a continuity error? She wasnt in the dungeon for the full 9 months, and the priest was aware of Samara dying at Shelter Mountain, so why wouldnt he know about the drowning attempt? He was clearly keeping tabs like Rachael

Re: Continuity error?
The second movie explicitly states Evelyn gave birth at the shelter. This movie explicitly states she gave birth in captivity under the church, which apparently you missed. They cannot both be true.
Re: Continuity error?
Really? I only remember she kept there about 8 and a half months and the priest said she (Evelyn) wanted to kill the baby (but I guess she wanted Samara dead even before her birth), but not remember telling about the birth. And she was raped there. So she wasn't there 9 months (okay, she could have given birth early).
So my opinion, she was escaping after all, and finds her wandering somewhere and bring to the shelter like in Ring 2.

Re: Continuity error?
The priest said he chained her up because she was trying to kill the baby. We see the chains in the room under the church so we know he did it there, hence she tried to kill the baby there, hence it was born there.
EDIT: Actually re-reading my line of thought I suppose it's theoretically possible that he meant she tried to kill the baby by abortion/causing a miscarriage. It's a bit of a stretch but if you really want to connect this to The Ring Two then I guess that's your best shot.
That said, the timeline issue is still there. Though again, if you wanna stretch credibility a bit to try and fill the hole, it's possible the lady who said Evelyn disappeared 30 years ago was just off by a decade somehow.

Re: Continuity error?
A priest believing abortion to be murder i don't think that's any kind of a stretch, actually. Just saying.
Re: Continuity error?
Not that part so much as her somehow escaping/being released just before giving birth and the movie not bothering to mention it. Kind of an important detail.
Re: Continuity error?
This also confused the hell out of me. However, I personally interpreted the "trying to kill the baby" thing as attempted miscarriage. Additionally, one of the images on the tape was of Evelyn, very pregnant, walking around outside - which indicates that she must have gotten out somehow. It seems like the movie should have explained that she escaped. I had wondered how she got out and ended up in the asylum, but I guess assuming that she escaped is the best bet.
Also, why did the priest move Samara's remains to his house?

Re: Continuity error?
I agree. I think Evelyn escaped captivity at 8 1/2 months and found the women's shelter and gave birth there.
The priest hid the bones after the flood because he knew they had power. He understood from the other people that visited that the marking on the hand meant "rebirth" and he was trying to stop this from happening.

Re: Continuity error?
Another issue between this and the second movie is how the hell Samara could even come back. Rachel realized she had to close the well in order to keep her from popping up in people's televisions and killing them and she sealed up her only way out. If this is following the first movie, then we don't have an issue since Rachel never knew how to keep Samara from coming back, but rather how to keep her off of HER back (by distributing the tape so other people can see it).
Re: Continuity error?
Agreed, this has really bothered me. How is Samara able to get out when the ring two suggested no exit for her.
Re: Continuity error?
Considering that the third film was supposed to be a prequel, it's just a plot hole. They chose to ignore Rachel trapping Samara because they couldn't find a creative way to write themselves out of that corner.
However you could also say that Rachel closing the well was really her stopping her from possessing Aidan again, or that she only closed the well from that particular tape (the one she burned) and Samara then realized that Rachel didn't want to be her mother so she stopped pursuing them.

I don't think this was ever to be a prequel. That seems to have just been an early rumor that was debunked. Even if this was originally a prequel it would later become a sequel, so an explanation should have been added so it followed after the second movie better.

All the more reason why they should have just made a prequel or perhaps make this an interquel and not even bothered making a third movie after all if they didn't want to do either. If you're going to make a sequel, then actually think of how to bring a character back without having to ignore a movie to do so. From what I read about it thus far, it seems like they were ignoring the sequel and this is more of a continuation off of the first movie.

Hmm, I guess you can look at it like that. But then it leads you to wonder how she can REALLY be stopped for good. The well thing seemed the best option for that and now they're gonna have to really dig into something more major to replace this.
Re: Continuity error?
I was referring to very early in development back at Dreamworks. Originally The Ring Two was supposed to have more flashback scenes of Samara and the Morgans and Dreamworks had them pull that material out of the script because they wanted to expand it into a full third film that was to be a prequel. This is why the Ring Two has a closed ending, because they knew the third film didn't have to answer the "How did Samara get out of the well?" question.
However, when the sequel failed critically the third film went into development hell and then Dreamworks was sold to Paramount who didn't look at the property again until 2010 when they decided they wanted a sequel instead of a prequel. Also, it was originally supposed to be a full on reboot but somewhere in the development process I guess they decided to make it a sequel/soft reboot.

Re: Continuity error?
It was stated in Rings that Evelyn was locked up for 8.5 months and we found out from Burke that he raped her during captivity. That she tried to hurt the baby doesn't mean it had to have been borne. So I think the idea is that she managed to escape.
We also see a vision of Evelyn wandering the streets pregnant.
I don't remember how she found Evelyn in The Ring Two.

Yeah, she had to have escaped and the movie never states that she was still there when she had Samara. I think the plot details between this and the sequel works out fine. We just get to know what Evelyn was doing before taken in by the catholic hospital. They weren't ignoring it as people were lead to believe. The only issues are Evelyn having blonde hair and stated being missing for thirty years by her sister. Maybe her sister never knew what happened to her. This is a small town that seems very isolated from the outside world as it is so this is something I'm willing to buy to close out that issue.
I don't remember how she found Evelyn in The Ring Two.
Reading the plot summary on Wikipedia, Rachel went to the Morgan's old farm house and came across some information there.

Continuity error?
*semi spoiler alert*
In Rings, it is said that Evelyn just disappeared one day, and no one knows what happened to her. Is this a continuity error, or is it possible that the people in the town don't know what became of her? Or perhaps they're lying?
