James Bond : Bond PTS Tournament Round 1: Die Another Day vs Live And Let Die.

So, after the success of the last couple of Tournaments, I have decided to do the next one. A Pre Title Sequence Tournament.

This will purely be for the scene between the Gunbarrel(in most cases) and the title theme.

Rules- voting will end 24 hours after the first post. I will not be around to immediately close the thread then but will only count votes within the time limit.

In the case of a tie the first vote after the time limit breaks the tie and ends all voting. You may also change your vote at any time while a competition is ongoing, and you may break a tie by doing so, but if a result is reached by the time limit or someone has cast a tie breaking vote all votes are locked.

So up first:

Die Another Day vs Live And Let Die.

LALD is definitely my favorite non-action PTS!

Connery, Moore, and Brosnan! Accept NO substitutes!

LALD is a far superior movie, but its PTS is rather uninspired and not all that interesting.

DAD, to its credit, does actually have a reasonably exciting PTS. It gets my vote.

On the contrary it's one of my favorites and I'd actually take it over quite a few of the "action" PTS's, the recent SPECTRE included.

It's just so unique - Hitchcockian, macabre, bizarre, suspenseful, humorous, scary. Just a fantastic collage of the truly bizarre and yet truly Bond! This is why we go to see these films. Not for real-world spy politicking and CIA double crosses a la QOS.

You might be right. Though, my premise was that the LALD PTS would not win a vote, not that the LALD PTS doesn't have its advocates and merits. Though it did do better vs DAD than I might have predicted, so hey what do I know?

One question: what are you doing about DN's PTS (or lack thereof)? Are you just omitting it and going with the other 23?

Well, it does still have a pre- scene of sorts.

It does present a problem actually. I may omit and put the NSNA action sequence that plays out over the titles instead.

I would naturally assume that NSNA would be represented in every competition. It is a serious James Bond film that had a cinematic release.

It also forms a part of my JB DVD collection.

Ooh, fun!

Live and Let Die's PTS has memorable moments in the deaths of Dawes and Baines, and strikes a surreal tone peppered with black humor, but the three vignettes are too disconnected from each other, resulting in a choppy PTS that feels like it goes by too fast. Given the way it's constructed, the absence of Bond is a plus, however.

Die Another Day's PTS feels just right: a striking and intriguing/exciting mini-movie. It just flows better than LALD's, and it's a full meal: suspense, action, humor and an ending that leaves you hooked. Memorable bits include the surfing, Bond taking Van Bierk's shades, the part with the punching bag and Bond firing at the mines.

So I choose DAD.

I like that general assessment.

LIVE AND LET DIE is good, Hitchcockian even (whose funeral is it? yours!), love the colors and music setting up the rest of the film. But where the heck is Bond?

DIE ANOTHER DAY for the win. It's all about Bond, very fun, builds to a nice climax. I like the standard Brosnan pre-title tease with the impossible three-surfing of "Jaws", then wondering what the heck comes next. There are some impossibilities played out but this is Bond. Anyway the only sour note struck is the "saved by the bell" one-liner as it was a popular teen's/children's show in the US at the time. Likely forgotten now, though.

Anyway, clearly DIE ANOTHER DAY here.

It is I am afraid, I did borrow, as your rules where far clearer than mine in the villain tourney. I hope you don't object.

DAD more by default. LALD is intriguing, but it feels like three awkwardly paced scenes that don't add up to a real momentum.

If you must blink, do it now.
