The Expanse : These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
So sad. Some movies have threads going back to the 90s. You can really go down memory lane reading those.
I've been coming here immediately after watching any show to see what people were talking about it. This is worse than anything that happened in 2016.

If we could "downvote" comments or "upvote" them, people would find the gems hidden around here better. Just sayin

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
For awhile, I had stopped commenting on these boards due to the trolls and then the politicization of just about everything, comments that had nothing to do with the films or series at all. I complained about it after having to constantly block users from my sight.
But it was possible to find threads with intelligent conversations. With active moderators, it could have salvaged its boards instead of giving it up to trolls and haters.
When I first started posting here, this troll/hater problem didn't exist to the degree it grew into. The comments focused on the films or TV shows without injecting remarks hating on gays, blacks, patriotism, etc. People actually talked informatively about camera angles and script quality. But then the alt right found a home.
I suspect that IMDB might have feared the new season of The Americans, which promises to become a wildly popular series entering into its fifth season.

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
Just found about this, which is very unfortunate. I can't think of a single website that allows you to discuss pretty much every film or television product ever produced. This site has not only allowed us to discuss many films and shows I can't readily or easily discuss anyplace else, but it's also been a wealth of information about any film or show. If there is a similar site as wide-ranging or vast, I simply haven't come across. I can only hope this is strictly a business decision under disguise, and not from the seemingly millions of idiots trolling and trashing the boards because they simply have nothing better to do with their lives other than cause trouble.
Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
These boards encourage long-form discussion, which is becoming nearly extinct, and they're open to anyone, whereas various boards are usually run by fans who don't allow any real criticism or even boisterous discussion of their subject. It's a real loss.

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
it absolutely must be business decision in disguise. thats main reason anything happens and also all other possibilities are not believable enough. maybe they saw that there was demand and are even making boards proimdb only feature and they'll announce it after initial dust settles and everyone forgets, who knows
just what they are doing is unheard of, shutting down service that has so much demand and use from people around the world and for what? ridiculous reason. and not just any service, but message boards that create communities. community is what makes any product successful, that was the case since internet's creation and dont think it'll stop with this. sure these kind of mistakes were probably more frequent in earlier days of internet but i thought everybody by now knew that they were in fact mistakes

SOMETHING
Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
This really blows. I have always come to imdb & the boards to get answers about movies, shows, actors, locations & music; sometimes just to get an idea of whether a movie/show is worth my time.
I understand & agree that the trolling has gotten worse than ever, but it's so easy to block or just keep scrolling to avoid it.
I am very disappointed about this.

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
PLEASE, please be sure to sign the petition/s to keep our boards open! I have been a member for years and love that we can discuss such a wide variety of movies in one place.
No one in my family is a part of the facebook or twitter community, nor do we wish to be. This has been an integral part of connecting with other lovers of movies.
This did not have to happen. I'm trying to spread the word too, hoping enough people petition and maybe they'll hold off on such a terrible move!

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
It doesn't surprise me. The Expanse board is pretty good but many of the other boards I go to have been totally infested with trolls who just clog up the threads with BS and attacks on others. I will miss the boards greatly as I have been coming here daily for 9 years. Sadly this is what happens in today's world where any idiot with access to a computer can shout their views at the world. Farewell and good luck.
Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
This is a good resource for finding additional on formation about movies, tv shows, and even though you sometimes had to sift through a lot of posts to find the good stuff but it's there.

We seem to have far too many sociopaths in this world. I kind of wonder if the internet has contributed to that. Detachment from real and complex persons you'd ordinarily have to meet in person.
It's too bad IMDB can't afford moderators.

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
More like a financial decision, History, ESPN, and others have already done it.
I refuse to use facebook. I hope this decision costs them popularity. I have little reason to return to IMDB without the boards.

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
It's a money grab. Look at all the links redirecting to imdb pro now
"Social" media will provide them with a wider cast net for marketing and advertisement than a specialised forum.
There's really no reason to ever visit imdb after this change, since all I really cared about is the forum.
Thanks Amazon!

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
Sad sad sad really
I wish these boards would continue! But seems like IMDB has made up its mind, which is a tragedy really. These boards are one of the best places to discuss theories, share opinions etc about shows and movies. Regardless of the troll infestation, they continue to be my everyday visit.
The internet would be poorer without these message boards

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
IMDB may not have 250 million users when the boards shut down. I find this a bit ironic since IMDB roots are from the old Usenet, one of the first internet forums.
I agree with you, ignore the trolls and you can find interesting conversations. I have no use for these studio support pages for new releases.

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
After TelevisionWithoutPity's excellent forums went away, I said to myself "well at least I have IMDb".
It's a business decision and not even 250 million signatures on that petition will change it. Terrible, terrible loss.

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
I also loved TelevisionWithoutPity, and will probably turn to the somewhat frenetic Redditt to exchange views on film and tv. I've been coming here for over 10 years pretty steadily, though I just gave up for a year or two at the height of the trolling and alt-right invasion. Still, there were always a few threads for programs that the trolls would either leave alone or be booted off from by adult commenters, typically adult films and programs that trolls didn't have the maturity to watch.
I consider the forums an asset to this website and believe it's a mistake to give in to the trolls and haters by nixing them. Active moderation could have salvaged discussion boards and also boosted the popularity of the site in the process. Following Redditt's example, appointing a moderator for each boardthere would be plenty of volunteersfor a year or so would have extinguished the trolls and set a pattern. Even cutting back on what is commented on initially would have helped cure the wave of hate and agendas infecting the boards.
Another tactic might have been inviting fans to create a comment section by application, making them wholly responsible for moderating their discussion forum based on IMDB TOS. The moderator would set the tone and expectations and curate their boards as needed.
A lot of sites have just given up their forums because of these trolls, a mistake.

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
Okay wtf? One of the reasons I keep coming back to IMDB and have been. For years is BECAUSE of the message boards and to hear the opinions of others about shows, good or bad. They shut this down and they're gonna lose a *beep* ton of users It's literally like shooting you're own foot, won't kill you but it sure as hell is going to hurt like a bitch and disable you for good.

It's a bit sad, since there's a pretty decent forum beneath all that trolling and negativity. I guess it's Reddit exclusively for me now, as Facebook and Twitter are damn near useless for forum discussions and Tumblr, well we know what Tumblr is.

Reddit always seemed inherently nasty to me as you get downvoted for saying the most innocent thing. Though it is good for bringing the most interesting things to the top.
Other platforms are useless for these kinds of conversations, I agree.

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
I've signed a petition active on the message boards (I'll check what thread and get back to you) but I'm also a Prime Member on Amazon and wrote them a letter when I went to look for their boards and couldn't find them.
I explained that I have been a long-time member in good standing and was more than willing to pay the 99 dollar a year cost increase because I felt the value was there to support it. THEN I found out that they own IMDb and are largely responsible for shutting it down. I told them that given my use of Amazon's Fire TV box they had just kicked the legs out from under my primary source of choice for finding out about new programming and movies and choosing which ones I want to invest in. I added that I had even watched some of their programming as a direct result of comments made on the boards they are shutting down.
So I told them I'd be looking for other sources to get the information I come here for and that I was going to reevaluate my membership with them to create a budget that will make my purchases from them so as to balance the expense of the cost of doing business with them and then make all my other purchases from smaller companies. I thanked them for a choice that would free up the time I would need to research all of their holdings so as not to accidentally purchase from a company under their umbrella. I thanked them for making me angry enough that I would be going BACK to the movies (after having gained information on them from other sources as well) instead of purchasing them from Amazon. I added that I would also have time to read more, given that I wouldn't be on the Fire Box as much as I used to and that I would use that time to locate and make purchases from small, independent dealers that big companies like theirs are driving out of business through outsourcing and price gauging and finally I thanked them for reminding me that we are a corporate nation and the only means left for the people of this country to make an impact on what is happening here is to research their purchases, maintain tighter control on where and how they spend their money and devote at least some of their time protesting the actions made by large corporations like theirs which are supported by a government that has not been "for or of the people" for quite some time now. I closed by telling them that while I was sure they would be sympathetic to how I felt about losing IMDb and the resultant actions that would come from that loss, there was still nothing they could do about it.
I was polite, I was to the point and I made the point that since they were taking something valuable away from me.
I would take my, assumedly, valuable dollars somewhere else in the future. I'm not cancelling my account but making my purchases serve to balance EXACTLY (and no more) with the cost of their 99 dollar a year fee, should help make my point and then I'll go look for small independent book companies who may buy a "stall" from them, but who also show a company name and location so I can look them up on my own online and buy their books directly and cut Amazon out of it altogether. I can do the same with video purchases which I can download from my computer onto my Amazon cloud and then watch them on my Fire TV Box again, cutting Amazon completely out of the purchasing process. I did not tell them that I've installed KODI on their Fire Box and that there was NOTHING on Prime that I can't get on KODI for free as well. except Shaun the Sheep which my chinchillas REALLY like to watch at night Honestly, they sit up like prairie dogs when I put STS on like it's the most important thing they've ever seen! It really is cute. But I can get them the movie on KODI if not the show episodes.
I've already found a new, small and independent online site that has lists much like IMDbs for movies AND there's also a site for TV & Movies you can sign up for that allows for commentary and has boards supporting a wide variety of genres and the shows that fall into them. It may not be as big or as well-sourced as IMDb, but it's an alternative and once they shut the boards down I'm going to find other means of getting ALL visual media related data from completely different sources altogether. I don't want my the ID from my laptop to EVER register on this site again once the boards are gone. Needless to say I also have no intention of visiting their FB page and I don't use twitter EVER. I don't text. I still believe it's possible to go EVERYWHERE without a cell phone attached to my head. I talk to PEOPLE I see in stores and I don't ask for tellers or checkers or retail personnel of any kind to wait while I finish my phone call. I see all of it as part of the same thing. People are not really communicating or connecting anymore and this site is one of the last places that has managed to get around that (I don't count trolls they're not "people" ).
IF the site is somehow restored, and I don't believe it will be as large corporations are indifferent to what we want they really are, then I will return. Otherwise, I'm outta here and I've told Amazon (who owns and operates the site and are the ones doing this) just exactly how I'll be spending my time and money as a direct result of this decision. It's not much, but I feel like I did what I could.

Janine, you really wrote all that - why? Who's going to read it all?
Those of you so sensitive about trolls, disagreements, comments you hate etc. know nothing about Usenet. Back in the late 80's, early 90's it was the heyday of the flame groups with alt.flame being the king. alt.flame allowed you to write anything you wanted and there were flame wars going all the time, which was its appeal. You HAD to come back with a good response because if you moaned about it you would get really flamed. It was the survival of the fittest and it was the greatest internet pastime ever. So, when I see people in various discussion boards, including this one, moaning about trolls, moaning about politicized comments, moaning about people not liking a show or movie making posts into its forum, it makes me smile. People are just so sensitive these days. Sad but true.

IMDb boards simply mean a lot to many people. I've been depressed ever since the news hit.

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
I am not surprised they shut it down. Sure there are many problematic users (god GoT board was a mess) but main reason is its way easier now to build up hype to mediocre or downright bad movies without any critical comment or discussion.
After all its about money.
Longterm IMDB will suffer because all the creative people who enhanced this site with their postings will be gone and I will then leave too. No need to visit IMDB anymore.
One of my most memorable findings was that there were other people on imdb who were blasted away by the fantastic acting of shorty. Minor character in Ray Donovan.

Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
If, as IMBD claims, the decision was based on data and traffic, what are their 250 million users doing here? Just going to the main page and looking at reviews and star listings?
Re: These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.
Yeah, I certainly won't be back. Metacritic is far better. The only thing IMDB had going for it was its internet-police-free message boards, where free speech was still possible. What possible reason do I have to come here now? Slanted news? Episode summaries? There is nothing of value here.
