The Dressmaker : Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

The setting, acting, set up and scenography (among others) are really good. However, there are som seriuos problems. The tone of the film is shifting. I haven't read the book but I saw the trailer and I expected a drama. The result is a mix between drama, comedy and even slap-stick comedy (kind of) sometimes. I felt that the film did not know what it wanted to be.
The way the "murder mystery" was unfolded felt poorly executed.

I took my wife to see this, we have very different taste in film but she fels just like I do. She too expected something different. However all I see here is praise for this film.
Is there anyone out there who feel like I do about this film?

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

I liked it. I would say this movie is better than a superhero movie for sure.

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

You can't really compare this film to superhero movies in general, because they are not made with the same purpose or for the same audience. Also, this movie is far from perfect, so even if we did compare the two strictly from a filmmaking standpoint, I could name at least a few superhero movies thar are better films than this one.

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

Yeah, I found the sudden shifts of tone terribly jarring. The sudden violence didn't mix with the farce AT ALL.

Don't worry, there's always someone out there who will validate your feelings for you.

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

Thanks =)

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

Probably yes, I loved it!

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

Sadly enough, I'm with you. Love Kate Winslet in so many movies before this one. Love the story line. Love the setting of the story. But, . don't try to be mean, is Kate Winslet a bit too old for this role?

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

No, she isn't old for this role i think she has the right age, the problem is that Liam Hemsworth is too young for his role. The age gap is the main problem but Kate Winslet is supposed to play a 35-40 years old dressamaker in the book written by Rosalie Ham. Liam Hemsworth is the main problem.

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

Was Liam Helmsworths character older in the Novel?

Yes, Teddy is supposed to be only a few years younger than Tilly.

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

Kate plays younger. Liam plays older that's no big deal. But I agree with the aforementioned comments about rather dramatic changes in tone, which don't quite work. High Plains Drifter meets Muriel's Wedding meets Priscilla Queen of the Desert? Some may embrace that sort of blend, but I think it may have played out better as a more deliberate drama. Ultimately you can't end up taking things seriously, when I think it was supposed to be a more serious story.

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

Well said - I fully agree.

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

Well - I believe they followed the book which had all these different elements in it.

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

I shouldn't think so

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

Well I'm sure you aren't the only one butt I certainly disagree.

The film knew exactly what it wanted to be and succeeded perfectly. Great Aussie sense of humour and a film style no one else but Australia could make.

Perfect performances and a complex story that Hollywood would never go near. I loved it but each to their own.

Just for once…

Why can't we make an Aussie movie where the characters aren't completely over the top?
Does anyone know people like the characters in this movie? Do people imagine that rural Australia is filled with these weird, stupid, unlikeable people?

And what is this movie? A hammy satire? A comedy? A murder mystery? I dont know, and I'm not sure the director did either.

My wife loves it, so each to their own I guess.

Re: Just for once…

you're terrible Muriel

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

It was a bit of a mess, not knowing what sort of film it was supposed to be.

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

I agree.Good acting but the movie is a mess

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

If this line is true

I took my wife to see this, we have very different taste in film but she fels just like I do.

Why do you feel the need to ask this question

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

hahaha perfect response

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

Not at all, I didn't enjoy it much.

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

It fell flat for me. Not good enough for comedy and not serious enough for murder and revenge. The romance between Tilly and Teddy was also not convincing because of their age difference. Jokes were not funny enough, Mad Molly was too aggressive. I walked out thinking this movie would be totally forgettable, especially after watching Sully and Snowden.

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

I loved this film. It wasn't what I expected at all - but it's veryAustralian and I love that. It was reminiscent of Strictly Ballroom in tone, for me.

I will admit it seemed to go a little off track after the death in the silo. The story didn't seemed to flow as well, but overall, a very entertaining and enjoyable experience - thanks in large part to the incomparable Judy Davis. That woman can do not wrong!

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

I had great expectations about the movie. I thought it would be a beautiful and romantic film, but what I found really disappointed me.

Like some other users said this movie is a mess, it's childish and it totally fails finding the right tone for its story.

I'm sorry, but there's no way this movie can be considered any good

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

I think the film knew exactly what it wanted to be - an off-beat and highly original movie that doesn't fit neatly into any existing pigeonhole. So many people seem to expect every movie to fall into a neatly defined category: action, comedy, drama, romance, or whatever, and expect the story to resolve itself in a comfortably conventional and linear fashion. I think this film shines because of its obstinate refusal to kowtow to any predefined genre, and I think it has to be approached on its own terms. If you go in with any kind of expectations, you're bound to be disappointed.

I greatly enjoyed the movie for its unpredictability and its eschewing of the customary formulae that characterize so many mainstream offerings. You really couldn't tell which way it was going to go next.

It's not written in stone that a movie has to be strictly one thing or another - comedic or dramatic, sobering or uplifting, provocative or comfortable. Yes, The Dressmaker is jarring at times, but such is the nature of life (and death). Personally, I love movies that break molds and dare to be different - provided of course that all production values are of a high standard, as this one's were.

On another tack - as an Australian, I was very impressed with Winslet's accent. That's the closest I've ever heard a non-Australian actor come to pulling off a convincing Aussie accent, an accomplishment which is so rare as to be almost non-existent. Almost all non-Aussie actors who attempt this miss by a country mile. I kept forgetting that Winslet isn't in fact a native, she did such a wonderful job.

Re: Am I the only one who doesn't like this film?

You are not the only one. I didn't even finish it. This is a case of where people are being told they are seeing art and what they are actually seeing is just a waste of time.
