Split : No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

That's a damn shame. It doesn't matter that the movie, itself, isn't Oscar material, I thought James did a stellar job in these roles. It's a damn shame Ryan Gosling (don't get me wrong, La La Land was a lovely little movie, but his was hardly an Oscar-worthy performance, in my opinion) and Viggo Mortensen got nominated instead. But Mr. McAvoy will be up on that podium someday, you wait and see!

Terriers always smell like warm, buttered toast.

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

He is not eligible till next year and I highly suggest people take to twitter at that time to remind the studios and anyone who is listening cause people will need to be reminded of his greatness around that time

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

I was with you until you implied Viggo Mortenson doesn't deserve an Oscar. He's a treasure.

But yeah, I think this movie came out too late for this year's oscars. Next year maybe.

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

@kingpinmultimedia It doesn't matter that the movie, itself, isn't Oscar material
Sure it does. The Academy's not going to give an Oscar to someone if they think that they were in a crappy movie, no matter how great the performance was.

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

A "crappy" movie that gets 74% on RT, a nice metacritics score, great word of mouth, fantastic BO and ravings for the main actor?

Good try, troll.

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

@cris-a Are you trying to say that the movie is Oscar material?

Good try, troll.

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

It was considered a good film by both critics and audience. Why wouldn't it be, especially with such a brilliant performance by the main actor?

Plus, lots of actors have been nominated for roles in much more mediocre films.

Keep trying, troll.

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

74% usually isn't oscar material. Doesn't mean it can't be and sometimes there are outliers (i.e. Extremely Loud & Indcredibly Close - but that had the Hanks effect).

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

The movie was not released in 2016, so he's not eligible for the upcoming Academy Awards. And besides, this isn't exactly the type of movie the Academy will seriously consider for any major awards, acting includedso don't hold your breath for him getting nominated next year.

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

I'm slightly optimistic on that
I remember Silence of the Lambs - it premiered on Berlinale in 1991, and went into cinemas in spring. Normally, it's not a good time for Oscar nominations, and it was "just a thriller" but it rocked on Academy Award in 1992.
I don't think M. Night will get a nom, but McAvoy is not out of the game.
And remember, a lot of people will see the movie again before the end of 2017., and discover nuances in his performance they missed on first sight

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

I do know that actors sometimes get nominated despite the movie not doing well like I think Emily blunt was nominated for a movie that seemed pretty low on rotten tomatoes and Im not sure how people thought of the movie monster but Charlize theron however her name is spelled deserved that oscar

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

Christian bale for the machinist also

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

Edward Norton for American History X. The film itself had mixed reviews and even got close to being disowned by the director, but he had no trouble landing the nomination.

The big drawbacks for McAvoy are the awful timing of the release and the genre.

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

He's definitely not out of the game, but Universal has to buy the campaign. They could do a limited re-release the film with some great extra McAvoy scenes that got cut, for example.

It's complicated because of the prejudice against genre, but not impossible.

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

Hey, it worked for Silence of the Lambs didn't it?

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

Good idea. So it's universal that runs the for your consideration ads? Cause I was tweeting at blumhouse thinking they were in charge

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

It would be a travesty if he didn't get recognized with a nomination. As to others saying the film is not Oscar material, that is irrelevant to an actors performance or other technical aspects of a film. Plenty of actors have been nominated for roles in films which are otherwise unremarkable. Personally I think this is a great movie, but McAvoy really stands apart with what he gave us. I truly hope the studio campaigns for this come next February. McAvoy earned it for sure.

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

Its nice that your Hoping for this but I'm expecting he will get snubbed like Joel Edgerton was snubbed for the gift but he might get spirt award Nomination or I guess a best villain nomination for something

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

Everything for this movie will be up for Oscars next year, was released to late this year to be up for any nominations. Hope this helps

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

Yeah, usually Oscar noms for this year come with movies released before the new year. This got released on Jan 20. I agree that McAvoy is very quite an actor. His work in Trance, Filth, and especially this prove that. Best actor is usually tough though. Have to think that a lot of great performances are going to come between now and the end of the year.

Trying to create a channel based on interpreting, reviewing, and even giving you something to laugh about film. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

Review of the film here-

Re: No Oscar nom for McAvoy?

Basic movie. Basic performance. Nothing special to see here.
