Split : Boycott IMDb
Re: Boycott IMDb
Yeah *beep* them
Re: Boycott IMDb
Why?
Re: Boycott IMDb
Because. Read the notice above the page.
Re: Boycott IMDb
How typical. Blame the company and not the people who force their hand. If people weren't immature jackwads, the boards wouldn't be closing.
-Dad, who's that?
-Oh, that? One of my patients. He'ssick.
-Will he live?
-It's looking grim.

Re: Boycott IMDb
I WILL indeed blame the company - they are punishing EVERYONE for the actions of a few. Boycott IMDB indeed - fvck um!
Re: Boycott IMDb
Great point. Why let 96% bad apples spoil the bunch?
Re: Boycott IMDb
Imdb can just live up to their responsibility and delete inpropriate post. No reason to kill the child because it screams.

Re: Boycott IMDb
ambeck22, I don't understand why you're blaming *us* for IMDB's act of stupidity.
Yet another example of where the victims end up blaming themselves for an injustice they're being subjected to. Sign of the times and it's high time the victims push back. IMDB's owners have pocketed the big bucks and now sit back and allow a few trolls to drag the whole thing down. Yes, we can block trolls but they just re-emerge using different avatars. IMDB needs to spend some of that pile of cash they're sitting on and hire some moderators.
and as for the taking down of the messageboards being about trolls: hmmmnot so sure. I think Amazon's Jeff Bezos (current owner of IMDB) has been leaned on by his BFFs in Hollywood to neuter IMDB. Hollywood pumps out the crap and doesn't want us hurting their bottomline by saying the "emperor has no clothes" on the messageboards.
Take down the messageboards and you might as well re-name it "Microsoft Cinemania". Many if us will remember that back in the 1990s IMDB killed off CD-ROM-based databases like Cinemania. Why? Because of the MESSAGEBOARDS !!! Take away the messageboards and you lose the interactivity that made IMDB so powerful. Cinemania was taken off the market in 1997. How long before IMDB meets same fate?

Re: Boycott IMDb
No one's forcing anyone's hand. Their reaction makes no sense. Most people come here to discuss the movies/shows in question. They're removing a feature people actually like and are sad to see go. There's no real reason for that. If these forums were mostly used by trolls, then the decision would make sense, but they're not.
Re: Boycott IMDb
If I boycott IMDB how does that affect them financially? Do they get a certain amount of money every time someone visits their app/website? I'm not trolling by the way, I genuinely don't know what way it all works so thanks for any info folks as I'm interested in learning how they make money by 'me' just going on their website to check out what year a film was made! :)
Re: Boycott IMDb
There's a fair amount of ad revenue that comes in for each visit. On the mobile app I almost always get Amazon ads at the bottom of the screen. Film distributors pay for ads to promote their new releases. That sort of thing. I can't see how a boycott wouldn't hurt their bottom line, at least a bit.
(I'm not the OP but I thought I'd answer! I'll miss the message boards here)

Re: Boycott IMDb
lol my opera browser has adblock built in, i also use adguard extension that blocks further ads. about the only ads i see are video ads. but for people that get ad views/clicks, they are just hurting themselves. i would venture to say their fairshare of visitors are for the message boards. this is an extremely stupid move on their part and not addressing the issue but just creating a much bigger issue by closing the boards down. so they are not coming out ahead. i believe they'll be back in a year when they realize how stupid they are.
Re: Boycott IMDb
I don't have to "boycott" them. Shutting down the message boards means I won't come here much anyway, so they're effectively making me boycott them.
Re: Boycott IMDb
Have to agree. In general any movie information you want is a simple google+wiki search away. Most times you don't even need to click on the page to get the info you want. I only come here for the boardswhere is everyone going now?
Re: Boycott IMDb
A lot of people are mentioning Reddit.
I've never fooled anyone. I've let people fool themselves.

Re: Boycott IMDb
Reddit was taken over by SJWs a year or two ago.

Re: Boycott IMDb
That's unfortunate.
Re: Boycott IMDb

Apparently they don't get enough traffic and are super negative. IMDb no longer wants to be a vector for people's rude comments.
I understand the super negative partbut isn't that just the internet? I don't think anyone would take anything said here and associate it with IMDb or expect IMDb to do anything about it. People are jerks but the internet is supposed to be a place where anyone can express anything. I've always been able to wade through the crap to get to the good posts. Every once in a while I've abandoned a board because it went to the trolls, but that was rare.

Re: Boycott IMDb
wow thanks for that. the negative part is the read between the lines methinks. studios probly pissed that message boards might hurt bottom line on a crappy film by letting everyone know it's crappy
Re: Boycott IMDb
Probably Reddit, but it's a totally different structure. Not every movie will get a spot on Reddit, where as I could watch any obscure movie and come here to discuss it with the scant number of people who actually saw it. It's a real shame they're shutting this part of the site down.
Re: Boycott IMDb
Agree. I will NEVER come here after 2/20.
They need to learn that kicking users in the nuts will NOT pay.

Re: Boycott IMDb
I dunno how IMDB makes money, but there would be no need for a boycott from me either. You've got Rotten Tomatoes for review aggregates, and wiki/google results for most cast listings. Nowhere near as in-depth, but like 1/1000 ppl must use imdb to find out who the 2nd unit Director was (industry ppl I guess).
They still got the Top 250 list I suppose!
I dunno why they couldn't just start by shutting the superhero movie boards firstthat's where the real cesspool is. Then work their way through the Tv shows i.e. The walking dead :/
oh yeah i guess i will leave ratings for some movies for awhile until the habit drops.
