Split : What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

It was kind of uneventful in terms of plot depth. The hostages were stupid and could have ended the movie at the very beginning. Then there were about 90 minutes of so so story of his split personalities as he went to the doctor and harassed and terrorized his hostages. I've seen more imagination in some B grade horror films. The twist wasn't spectacular either.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

I will note that James McAvoy did a find job, I have no gripes about his acting in this.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

Well, opinions are subjective. It's fine if you didn't find it great, while others did.

But the reason I found it great, is that it had great acting from the leads, the story was well paced and structured, and the film did a good job building its tension, and knowing when to hold on to it, before letting it break loose.

This film is very much a character driven story. Which means the plot is all about the characters and their emotional arcs. These kind of films never have a heavy physical plot. And given this entire movie hinges on McAvoys character + Anya's character (her arc runs parallel to his), it really wasn't supposed to be plot heavily.

So to you - the pacing was slow. To you the story was lacking (as you didn't find the character plot fulfilling enough). I don't agree with that. So guess we just don't agree. Which is fine. I respect your view point..

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

I completely respect your opinion which is all I'm looking for.

This reminded me a lot of the movie Spiral, except I thought Spiral felt less slow paced and the characters were easier to relate to emotionally. I won't spoil the plot if you haven't seen it but I'd suggest watching it if you enjoyed this.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

Neither did I. I actually found it pretty boring.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

I agree with you. While I enjoyed it and have spent hours dissecting it, (mostly for the symbolism and cross references) I was also disappointed with how straight foreword the plot was. The trailer pitches it as a guy with DID who kidnaps 3 teenage girls, and that's exactly what happens. I expected more than that, especially from Shyamalan.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

Given Sham's recent swing and misses I think this one was meant to be "scary" without that Sham major twist ending that either really gets people excited or people really hate. It was becoming the norm for his movies and people were starting to hate it (I like them). I think this was deliberately more straight forward despite the unique circumstances of the plot.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

I don't disagree with you. I was just disappointed because generally I seek out movies that are more than they seem, and you used to be able to expect that from this director.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

This is true. However it could be said this film had to be made in order to setup the possibility for an Unbreakable 2. The Beast vs. Bruce Willie!

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

This film IS Unbreakable 2. The last in the trilogy is already being planned with the Beast vs. David Dunne theme. The movie was an entertaining thriller which left me scratching my head at times. At first, I thought the part with the Beast bending the bars was a little over the top. I also thought that the "those that are broken are the ones who are extraordinary" was an interesting theme - but it wasn't until the ending that everything fell into place and I understood a lot of what was happening in the movie, and why. Shymalan pulled off something no other director that I know of have - release a sequel without anyone realizing it was a sequel.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

Not a clever movie. Pretty stupid scenes throughout from everyone from beginning to end. I don't need to list them since they are blatantly obvious. it's a crappy script with a try hard "twist" and only helps if you've watched Unbreakable.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

I waited two hours for the twist and when it came it really wasn't worth it, in a film that was essentially a set up for subsequent film.

Good performances, for the most part, though.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

Your problem was watching it solely for the twist. No wonder you're disappointed.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

I was hoping the end would justify the journey, it didn't.

The twist is pretty much the only thing this film has going for it, as the plot was just a set up for it.

It was a weak charade-like the majority of Shyamalan's film.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

I liked the story and quite frankly I appreciated seeing a movie with tension and this kind of a plot but without a bunch of explicit sexual violence or torture. It was engaging and disturbing but without feeling overly exploitative.

Yes, some character choices were frustrating, but I actually felt like I understood what was behind even the stupidest of the decisions.

I liked the performances, and especially that the movie didn't feel the need to make either of the other hostages the "mean girl" or super nasty bullies. They felt sorry for Casey and didn't understand her, but they weren't jerks. I cared about them all and that added stakes to the movie for me.

I appreciated that the movie had a weird toneto the point where sometimes I was laughing and horrified at the same time (such as when the Patricia alters says "He's not well" in a whisper and makes that exaggerated frowny-face or Hedwig's line "Mr. Dennis says you wear a lot of shirts!").

I liked the camera movement and the framing of several of the scenesit reminded me of what I liked so much about The Sixth Sense. That shot toward the end of him climbing the walls (and the weird way he sort of "dismounts" when Casey yells his name)loved it.

Mostly I enjoyed the fact that the movie built to a natural conclusion and that the twist (which I consider more of a post-credit type stinger) doesn't do any "damage" to the story that came before it. This movie wasn't written just to pull the rug out from under the audiencethe emotions of the characters are real and their world is real. I thought it was a great movie to see in the theater.

I had some qualms with the writing (namely I think that the theme of "survivors/broken people are stronger!" falls kind of flat), but overall I thought it was great fun. And I enjoyed seeing it a second time with some friends.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

I didn't think it great. I did think McAvoy was great in it and Anya Taylor Joy is becoming an actress to really watch out for. But I thought the therapist character and a lot of the things she does weren't written very well. I also thought the "trying to survive a killer psycho" thing was something Shyamalan just did already in The Visit and that he was just coming back to it again. Their was also a bit of a pacing issue. It's not perfect, not terrible either though.

Trying to create a channel based on interpreting, reviewing, and even giving you something to laugh about film. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

Review of the film here-

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

Macavoy was really good. What I didn't like is that the little girl did not shoot the uncle who abused her. She was a victim her whole life. Maybe that's why she couldn't jump out of the car when they were taken.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

Watched it last night and did not like it. the characters are all unlikeable that you don't feel the need to stay on anyone's side. Also I was told beforehand to expect groundbreaking acting from McAvoy but all I've seen was little easy characters really.
The beast part was not scary. Nothing about this film made me feel any kind of a thrill.
There was this disassociation in this film that you can feel from script to direction to characters. Perhaps the girls are all miscasts. (and yes, they could have escaped from the begging but well let's leave that to that).

I'm not attacking Shyamalan as a person for this film. Yes he has had his share of bad choices and perhaps Split is his redemption but it just did not feel quite strong at the end.

Especially with the plot twist at the end which I am not going to even call it a plot twist. Just a cool gimmick. You could have survived without it really. Just imagine if you don't have that last scene and the movie ends with the horde mirror scene. That's fine. It establishes a sequel possibility.

But to be fair, it's February and people are tired of all those MEGA OSCAR FILMS and they needed a light snack.

Re: What was so great about this? I didn't really care for it.

I really enjoyed it!

My reasons:
1. McAvoy's performance- amazing. He was funny, horrifying, sympathetic, disgusting, vulnerable and menacing. He was able to flicker between personalities and communicated his inner conflict. Very impressed.

2. Joy - She's a stunning actress, I think she is on her way to getting really choice parts. I saw her in Morgan, and she is also good at being vulnerable and badass. Liked her subtle performance. 2b. It was VERY cool to see a role like this for a young woman.

3. I love movies with psychological themes, but that is a personal preference.

4. M. Night's direction - i think he does well with suspense. I was at the edge of my seat the whole time. I loved the creepy and bizarre touches. I like how he set up some of the shots.

5. Unfortunately, I knew that there was some sort of twist going in. I hate this because then you are not viewing the work as it should be seen (instead the viewer is trying to guess what the twist is). However, I did not see this one coming from a mile away.
