Divorce : Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
What kind of actor would you rather see play Robert? Personally, I like that he's odd and different.

Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
Truth be told he's actually grown on me quite a bit since the first episode but I guess I didn't expect him to be so funny. I expected him to be more of a suit and tie kind of guy.
-Who is it?
-It's Grandpa. And it sounds like he's gotten into the horseradish again.

Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
He is very funny, more so than they've written SJP to be. It makes some of his boorish, obnoxious behavior more tolerable.
Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
I think he's absolutely hilarious. He's the only reason I'm still watching. It might be hard to believe, but this is the first thing I've ever seen him in. Is this what he's always like, or just the character? He cracks me up!
Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
Oh gosh, I actually haven't seen him in anything since I was a lot younger. Wings when I was a kid and Sideways when I was a teenager. So I don't know if this is how he always acts.

Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
He had a small bit in that Ferrell/Wahlberg comedy 'Daddy's Home' and he was absolutely hilarious in it. His character was pretty obnoxious in that too.
Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
On this show, how he keeps a straight face is beyond me. I'd be dying to laugh if I had to say those things, they'd have to do 50 takes of every scene. The fact that he manages to be so serious is probably what cracks me up the most. He makes this show worth watching.
Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
I don't see any chemistry between the two lead actorszero.
Ironically, actors that play their children have sibling chemistry.
I love THC as an actor; Sideways is one of my all-time favorite romantic comedies, after Pillow Talk.
I've like SJP since Square Pegs. But somehow these two don't mesh together.
He's great in his rolebut with another actress playing the wife.
She's great in her rolebut with another actor playing the husband.
Maybe SJP could've played off of Jon Hamm, Brian Cranston, David Duchovny or Ray Romano a little better???

Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
I totally agree.
I could see him with Sharon Horgan but not with Sarah Jessica Parker.

Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
They're not supposed to mesh or have chemistry! We're supposed to scratch our head that this union ever happened, feel awkward when they're in scenes together, and I think they're doing a great job.
Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
I disagree, he is the main reason I watch this show. I think he is managing to make an otherwise obnoxious character engaging and funny.
Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
This show has taken a while to like. I think THC and SJP are both great. It is true that SJP has some Carrie Bradshaw to get rid of, but I'm hoping that happens over time. I've seen all the episodes so far and am looking forward to next week's!.
You'd do all that for a part in a play?
- Karen Richards to Eve Harrington, "All About Eve"

Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
At this point he's the only reason I continue to watch, it's certainly not for Francis the eternal victim who cheated on her husband for almost a year. I get she was unhappy, but nothing excuses her actions.
Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
Gotta agree with the OP 100%, he just seems way out of place here.
Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
Disagree- I feel like this role was written specifically for THC!
Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
The character is complex. He's at once frustrating, funny, likable and totally impossible. Haden Church handles the role deftly. I was never a fan, as such, but he's proven to be just perfect for the role.

Re: Thomas Haden Church feels miscast
Agree with OP. I enjoy this show, and Church is doing a solid job, but some of the lines are so funny that I can't help but picture other comedic actors being funnier.
Vince Vaughn would be perfect for the role. Seth Rogen would also work (even though he's not the right age).
