You haven't seen La La Land yet? How come you're on the La La Land message board lol.
I loved Hacksaw Ridge but I'd be really surprised if it won best picture.

Re: Rank The Oscar Nominees For Best Picture
The music attracted me. Just saw it today, thought it was pretty terrific albeit lighthearted fare (nothing wrong with that.) Doubt HSR would win either, but so far, it's my favorite, easily. The rest of the films that I've seen have all had their moments and are admittedly pretty close, but HSR was really powerful, from start to finish IMO.

Re: Rank The Oscar Nominees For Best Picture
I've only seen two
1. La La Land (9.8)
2. Arrival (6.8)
Why I have only seen these two? It's because I'm a Malaysian and I live in Malaysia which in every year, the marketing for Oscar and Golden Globe worthy movies are dreadful. It came out Lion last year, but I didn't see it. Hacksaw Ridge is coming out on the 16th Feb '17 (THANK GOD!). Manchester By The Sea, Hell Or High Water, Moonlight, Fences, Jackie aren't going to come out. Hidden Figures is a 50/50 chance.
I hate it, I always hear after coming out of the hall of almost every Oscar movie that Malaysians keep bashing the movie like it's the worst movie ever but when it comes to movies like Action and Sci-Fi; let's take the Transformers series and Suicide Squad, they love it so much they wanna watch it again and again. Pissed me off.
The only best way for me to do is to buy the DVDs on Amazon or pirated it.
La La Land got accepted by a lot of people here but Arrival just got dumped in the trash, I watched Arrival twice; first time I hated it but it turned out, the second time I loved it. La La Land; I have seen it six times and I love it so much.

1)La La Land - 10/10 - even its flaws were enjoyable
2)Manchester by the Sea - 9/10 - a great movie that I just have to see again
3)Arrival - 4.5/10 - an extremely overrated piece of cr@p with some redeeming qualities in the acting department. Seriously, I haven't been so disappointed by a movie since I don't know Since at least a decade ago. Even 'The Force Awakens' didn't disappoint me so much.
I have yet to see 'Hidden Figures' and 'Hacksaw Ridge'. The others do not attract my interest in the slightest.

Re: Rank The Oscar Nominees For Best Picture
You've seen my top 4. My favorite is Hacksaw Ridge too, but overall technically I gave LLL the number one spot. So same order as well, really.
Beyond them, the rest aren't as good. I preferred Silence, Don't Breathe, and even Loving over the others. Loving is a quiet film, but Joel Edgerton gives a solid performance and so does Ruth Negga. It's a low budget, based on a true story, a little slow. Silence is a little slow too, but got to admire Scorcese's craftsmanship and trying something different. Good acting across the board too.

Re: Rank The Oscar Nominees For Best Picture
It seems we must have a similar taste in movies then :) I loved Don't Breathe too. Definitely my favorite thriller of the year (I don't know if I'd strictly call it horror). I haven't seen Silence or Loving yet, but they are both on my radar to watch in the future.

Re: Rank The Oscar Nominees For Best Picture
Didn't finish Fences or Hidden Figures. Fences, because it's play roots were showing way too strong and Hidden Figures because it seemed like, everyone is saying, a Lifetime movie.
7) Moonlight (very average movie, slightly boring at points, I don't see the hype)
6) Lion (like Moonlight, just average)
5) Hacksaw Ridge (it was a great action movie, but seemed too "cool" for a war movie, if that makes sense)
4) Hell or High Water (slow but has some very great sequences)
3) Manchester by the Sea (amazing performances and totally engrossing)

Re: Rank The Oscar Nominees For Best Picture
Tier I
1 La La Land - among my 10 favorite BP nominees or winners, period
2 Moonlight - very deserving and would be a deserving winner
Tier IA
3 Manchester by the Sea - excellent but suffers a bit in comparison with director's previous film Margaret
Tier II
4 Arrival - excellent but a bit too much of that typical Hollywood rush-to-discovery ending that is prevalent in too many otherwise good SF films
Tier III
5 Lion - GREAT first third, felt a bit formualaic after that, still a fine film
6 Hell or High Water - solid neo-western even if the many clichs pile up alarmingly
7 Fences - acting and ambiance save this and make it very watchable, but it can never escape it's essential staginess
Tier IV
8 Hidden Figures - pretty typical and generic (in the filmmaking and moral thrust, not so much in the story) Hollywood history lesson; acting is solid but that is overall not enough to make it something I'd likely bother with seeing again
Tier V
9 Hacksaw Ridge - film's pacifistic central character is ultimately overwhelmed by all too typical rah-rah America's so great and war is necessary theme - and I am troubled both by the way the Japanese were depicted, and the little coverage of this aspect in criticism. Still not an awful film or anything just very, very mixed for me.
Overall a well above-average year for nominees IMO.

Re: Rank The Oscar Nominees For Best Picture
I've only seen three so far but;
1. LION - A great movie based on a true unbelievable story, one of the most emotional films I've seen in a while. I also have this movie to win for Best Score. But it will probably go to "La La Land"
2. MOONLIGHT - Good movie, felt a bit like oscar bait, considering the events of the story, with the things going on around the world right now. Never really got to me emotionally, but a can't really relate to it so that's why. Really enjoyed the way the story was told though, and the 3 actors who played the main character. Although my favourite was Mahershala Ali's character, shame he wasn't in the movie longer as it kind of dragged when he wasn't around.
3. LA LA LAND - I have never seen a movie be so blatantly oscar bait. It was trying to reach for that nostalgia but fell flat for me with a hollow story. I really enjoyed the first 90 mins or so, but after the story took a complete 180, it went downhill. With the music I only really liked "Epilogue." And as for how much the ending has been praised for not having a "cliche" happy ending, it was actually just that "cliche." Where the two main characters give up their relationship so they can have their own lives when they could've just waited for each other. But that was to "cliche" isn't it?
