La La Land : Decent but not a great musical

Decent but not a great musical

Cannot understand for the life of me how it's nominated for 14 Oscars -the competition must be really poor.As a film it's certainly watchable but falls way behind films like Moulin Rouge,Chicago and Les Miserables. The hype from some of the critics is astounding.

Re: Decent but not a great musical

I dreamed a dream and Come what may are absolute classics. The music in this film is instantly forgetful .I watched it less than half an hour ago and can't remember any of the music.

Re: Decent but not a great musical

I'm watching the songs you just listed and literally forgetting what I'm listening to the second after it happens.

So I guess it goes both ways.

Less than forget. But more than begun.

Re: Decent but not a great musical

I saw it with a friend of mine and did not care for it. The last few scenes were the best part of this movie-which felt like two different films at times.

The structure is a mess. The score and musical numbers forgettable.

I am all for updating film genres BUT come one!!! That "The Messengers" concert with all of those back up singers and crazy dancers on stage summed up "La La Land" Hilarious where it was not even trying to be. This movie was more hype than content. There are far better films out there. If you like and appreciate good musicals and great storytelling skip this and rent one of the classics!

Re: Decent but not a great musical

I agree. It was okay.

The singing from both was okay not great. Emma Stone started octave too high IMHO. Ryan was an okay singer.

I enjoyed the dancing alot.

But I liked this better than recent past musicals.

Re: Decent but not a great musical

MOULIN ROUGE - 4/10
CHICAGO - 6/10
LES MISERABLES; LA LA LAND - 8/10

Re: Decent but not a great musical

Decent, but not a great comment about the movie

Depends what you classify as a musical. Should a musical purely be focused on song and dance and music but sacrifice a deep and emotional story or can a musical be a hybrid and still tell a deep and emotional story while being able to tell important moments using songs and dances.

My only complaint about this movie is that I found some songs and dances were a bit short, but I fear that is more a consequence of modern society and its shortened attention span (at least when it comes to movies).

If you purely say it is not a good musical because it has short songs and not every moment was filled with song and dance, then yes in that sense it was not a good musical. But yet it was better than the three you mentioned because it tells a far deeper and emotional story while still managing to have some well placed humour as well not to mention outstanding acting that far out performs the three movies you have mentioned.

TL;DR - it depends on how you define a musical. La La Laland has superior story and acting (as well as some epic original compositions check on YouTube the full 7 minute version of City of Stars) but it falls short on the pure musical elements of song and dance, which it needed to in order to be able to tell the story it wanted to tell.
