They must have composited her head onto a boy's body for the shirtless scenes. Which is kinda creepy.

Well, with this Tip still being held prisoner by Mombi, which is the same as in the book kinda implies that it's still Ozma.

But I'm going to wager in this version her true form is a flaming psychotic *beep* who mass-murders everyone and Mombi was just trying to stop her from going on a genocidal rampage because Crapsack World Trope.

Yes that's correct. That part the writers seem to be following.

First, I wouldn't say "disguised" Ozma was changed into a boy who was named Tip. Completely.

Second, it was not done to protect her. The Wizard brought Ozma to Mombi so she couldn't be used to challenge his control of the Emerald City. Mombi hated Tip and pretty much used him as a slave. He ran away when she decided, for various reasons, to turn him into a statue to decorate her garden.

My bad - as I said, it's been years since I read the books.

I just wanted to add that Ozma was the daughter of the previous king of Oz, who had been deposed by the Wizard. The Wizard brought Ozma as an infant to Mombi, to have her enchanted into a boy, to prevent anyone from recognizing her as the rightful heir to the throne.

The actress, Jordan Loughran, is like 26.

She looked like a little kid. Maybe they really did do the composit thing.

They put a wig on her and they probably put a green spanx-like bra that allowed them to paint a more masculine looking chest on her in post. It's cheaper than compositing her head on a teen boy's body. Plus, her body looked like a woman dressed as a boy.

It's getting to be a lot more common to do those sorts of effects. Claire Danes' pregnancy was edited out of Homeland. Cersei Lannister's nude "walk of shame" on Game of Thrones used Lena Headey's face on a nude body-double, as Lena was pregnant at the time.

NBC isn't HBO or Showtime, but a series about Oz would be expected to have a hefty effects budget.

I was very confused when I first saw Tip. She is clearly a girl but why didn't she have tits?

It makes sense later that she was indeed a woman. I guess they use computer to photoshop her breasts.

So basically it's a reverse Crying Game ;) When I first saw Tip, I instantly thought: looks eerily like Dil disguised as a boy and in the last scene: BAM! There she is, all pretty with crazy big hair and the guy staring a bit lower in utter shock and disbelief. Almost expected him to run off and hurl ;)

yeah I was wondering at first if she was just flat chested and it was okay since she was playing a male character, but the end seemed like she had breasts that would have been noticeable, so either head replacement or prosthetic, which yeah is a bit weird. Probably the same for the first scene you see them in, where their shirt is parted open a bit.

She definitely has some major league hooters now.
